这节经文叙述的是穆圣从麦加由阿布•伯克尔陪同移居麦地那, 那时他住在一个叫索尔 (ثَوْر, Thaur) 的山洞内。经文对阿布•伯克尔非常高的精神地位作了些说明。他被称为 “那两个人中间的一个”, 这两个人是安拉确实和他们在一起而且很亲近的。据记载, 在那山洞里, 阿布•伯克尔开始哭泣, 当穆圣问他为什么哭泣时, 他回答说, “安拉的先知啊, 我不是为了我自己的生命而哭, 因为如果我死, 那不过是我一个人的生命问题。但是如果你死, 那将是伊斯兰教和整个穆斯林社会的死亡” (زُرْقَانِی, Zurqani)。

The pronoun "him" in the clause "His peace on him" may refer to Abu Bakr since the Holy Prophet had all along been perfectly calm and quiet and the pronoun "him" in the clause "succoured him," however, refers to the Holy Prophet. This divergence in the use of pronouns known as Intisharud- Dama’ir is of common use in Arabic. See 48:10.

The reference in this verse is to the flight of the Holy Prophet from Mecca to Medina when, accompanied by Abu Bakr, he took shelter in a cave called Thaur. See note on 8:31. The Arabic words rendered as "one of the two" literally mean "the second of the two" and refer to the Holy Prophet and Abu Bakr. The Holy Prophet has been referred to as "the second" because in the Quranic idiom the more important member of the group is referred to as being the last part, i.e. the final figure. For instance see 5:74 where God is referred to as being "the Third of the Trinity" according to the Christian doctrine.
The verse sheds important light on the high spiritual status of Abu Bakr, who accompanied the Holy Prophet in his flight from Mecca and was thus one of "the two" referred to in the verse. It is worthy of note that when at a time of danger, the Israelites anxiously addressed Moses, saying, We are surely overtaken, he replied, nay speak not thus for my Lord is with me. He will direct me aright (26:62, 63). In a similar situation, however, the Holy Prophet, when Abu Bakr expressed anxiety, calmly said: Grieve not, for Allah is with us. This speaks volumes for Abu Bakr’s spiritual greatness, for the pronoun "us"- signifies that God was not only with the Holy Prophet but with Abu Bakr as well. Again, it is on record that, while in the cave, Abu Bakr began to weep, and when asked by the Holy Prophet why he was weeping he replied, "I do not weep for my life, because if I die, it is only the question of a single life. But if you die, O Prophet of God, it will be the death of Islam and of the entire Muslim community" (Zurqani).

The verse thus provides a great testimonial to the strength and sincerity of Abu Bakr’s faith.

The real significance of the verse is that the Holy Prophet has been told not to grieve over the fact that disbelievers were about to be punished and all their riches, prosperity and glory of which they are so proud would be of no avail to them.

ازواجا (some classes) is the plural of زوج which means, any sort of thing; sort or species i.e. class; one of a pair or couple of things; a thing having with it a thing of the same kind; a woman’s husband or a man’s wife (Lane & Aqrab).
Commentary:
The words, Stretch not thine eyes towards that what We have bestowed on some classes of them, do not mean that the Holy Prophet is here bidden not to covet the worldly possession of disbelievers, for such an interpretation is not only inconsistent with his dignity and nobility of character but also is in conflict with the clauses that immediately follow, viz.and grieve not over them and lower thy wing of mercy for the believers. The real significance of these words is that the Holy Prophet has here been told not to grieve over the fact that disbelievers, instead of feeling grateful to God Who had bestowed riches and prosperity on them, had incurred His wrath on account of their wickedness and now all their glory and power was going to depart and they were about to be destroyed. In fact, it had very much grieved the Holy Prophetthat the disbelievers whom God had blessed with such prosperity were going to be destroyed for their disobedience. He had wished and prayed that they should have believed in him and thus have inherited the spiritual blessings promised to his followers. But instead of this they disobeyed God and defied His Prophet and therefore were going to be destroyed as God had informed the Holy Prophet in the words: and the hour is sure to come (v. 86). This naturally caused much grief to the Holy Prophet who has been here bidden not to grieve for the Meccans, for they had made themselves deserving of this fate, but to devote his merciful attention to the up-bringing of the small community of believers and to look after their moral and spiritual welfare. Incidentally, this injunction also implied a veiled hint about the impending migration of the Holy Prophet and his followers to Medina; for it was not possible to train and bring up the small band of believers as pioneers of the new world order so long as they were in Mecca, where they had no freedom of action. The verse also hints that the Holy Prophet desired to delay and postpone his departure from Mecca out of a heartfelt desire to save the disbelievers, if possible. He is bidden here to wait no longer and prepare for departure.
The words, Stretch not thine eyes towards what We have bestowed on some classes of them, do not refer even to the Companions of the Holy Prophet, as suggested by some commentators, who assert that these words depict the mental condition of some of the Muslims at the time when they saw the caravans of the two Jewish tribes of Banu Quraizah and Banu Nadir laden with jewels, scents, etc. The fact that the whole Surah has been admitted by the consensus of scholarly opinion to have been revealed at Mecca, where there were no Jews, knocks the bottom out of this baseless insinuation.

سِیْٓءَ بِھِمْ وَضَاقَ بِھِمْ ذَرْعًا اس کے یہ معنے نہیں کہ مہمان نوازی کا خیال لوط علیہ السلام کو بُرا لگا۔ بلکہ مطلب یہ ہے کہ چونکہ لوطؑ کی قوم نے ان کو منع کیا تھا کہ وہ غیر معروف مسافروں کو گھر میں نہ لایا کریں۔ اس لئے حضرت لوط علیہ السلام کو یہ رسول دیکھ کر دکھ پہنچا اور ان کا دل تنگ ہوا کہ کہیں ایسا نہ ہو میری قوم مجھے مہمان نوازی سے روکے اور مہمانوں کو دکھ دے چنانچہ قرآن کریم میں آتا ہے اَوَلَمْ نَنْھَکَ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ (الحجر: ۷۱) اے لوط! کیا ہم نے تجھے غیر معلوم مسافروں کے گھر میں لانے سے نہیں روکا ہوا؟ اس زمانہ میں شہر چھوٹے چھوٹے اور دور دور ہوت
اِنَّا مُنَجُّوْکَ یہ درحقیقت خداتعالیٰ کا کلام ہے۔ قرآن کریم میں عربی قاعدہ کے مطابق انتشار ضمائر کثرت سے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔ یعنی غائب سے بدل کر حاضر کی ضمیر اور حاضر سے بدل کر غائب کی ضمیر استعمال ہوتی ہے۔ چنانچہ دیکھ لو کہ چند آیتیں نیچے فرماتا ہے ہم نے اس واقعہ کو نشان کے طور پر پچھلی قوموں میں چھوڑا اور اس سے اگلی آیت میں فرمایا کہ مدین کی طرف ہم نے ان کے بھائی شعیبؑ کو رسول کرکے بھیجا تھا۔ یہ دونوں آیتیں رسولوں کی طرف خواہ انہیں فرشتہ سمجھو یا انسان‘ منسوب نہیں ہو سکتیں‘ اللہ تعالیٰ ہی کی طرف منسوب ہو سکتی ہیں۔ پس ’’ہم تجھ کو نجات دینے والے ہیں‘‘ بھی خد

Daqa Bihi Dhar‘an means, he lacked strength or ability or power to do the thing (Lane). Who the messengers mentioned in the verse were and what their mission was has been explained in 11:70, 71 and 15:68-72. Their visit distressed and grieved Prophet Lot because his people, having adopted the calling of the road, did not like strangers to visit their town and therefore they had forbidden Lot to receive outsiders. He feared that his people might humiliate him before his guests.

سییء (he was distressed) is passive verb from ساء. They say ساء الامر فلاناً i.e. the affair grieved such a one; or did with him what he hated. ساء به ظنا means, he suspected him (Aqrab).
ضاق بھم ذرعا (felt helpless on their account). ضاق means, it was or became narrow. They say ضاق عن الجواب i.e. he was incapable of replying. The expression ضاق به ذرعاً means, his power or ability was straitened or was inadequate to it or he was unable to do or accomplish the thing or he lacked strength or ability or power to do the thing (Lane).
Commentary:
Who the messengers mentioned in the verse were, what their mission was and why their visit distressed and grieved Prophet Lot has been explained in 11:70-71 & 15:68-72. It is enough for the purpose of the verse under comment to say that the messengers were righteous men of the locality and not angels as popularly believed, and that they had been commissioned by God to convey to Abraham and Lot the warning that Lot’s people were about to be punished on account of their vices and iniquities and to take Lot to a place of safety. Lot was distressed when the messengers arrived because his people being robbers were apprehensive of strangers visiting their city and therefore they had forbidden Lot to receive outsiders. It may further be noted here that "the messengers" brought to Abraham the glad tidings of the birth of a son, and at the same time the tidings that the people of Lot were going to be destroyed, the word البشری being applied to both good and bad news.

سییء (he was distressed) is passive verb from ساء. They say ساء الامر فلاناً i.e. the affair grieved such a one; or did with him what he hated. ساء به ظنا means, he suspected him (Aqrab).
ضاق بھم ذرعا (felt helpless on their account). ضاق means, it was or became narrow. They say ضاق عن الجواب i.e. he was incapable of replying. The expression ضاق به ذرعاً means, his power or ability was straitened or was inadequate to it or he was unable to do or accomplish the thing or he lacked strength or ability or power to do the thing (Lane).
Commentary:
Who the messengers mentioned in the verse were, what their mission was and why their visit distressed and grieved Prophet Lot has been explained in 11:70-71 & 15:68-72. It is enough for the purpose of the verse under comment to say that the messengers were righteous men of the locality and not angels as popularly believed, and that they had been commissioned by God to convey to Abraham and Lot the warning that Lot’s people were about to be punished on account of their vices and iniquities and to take Lot to a place of safety. Lot was distressed when the messengers arrived because his people being robbers were apprehensive of strangers visiting their city and therefore they had forbidden Lot to receive outsiders. It may further be noted here that "the messengers" brought to Abraham the glad tidings of the birth of a son, and at the same time the tidings that the people of Lot were going to be destroyed, the word البشری being applied to both good and bad news.

Daqa Bihi Dhar‘an means, he lacked strength or ability or power to do the thing (Lane). Who the messengers mentioned in the verse were and what their mission was has been explained in 11:70, 71 and 15:68-72. Their visit distressed and grieved Prophet Lot because his people, having adopted the calling of the road, did not like strangers to visit their town and therefore they had forbidden Lot to receive outsiders. He feared that his people might humiliate him before his guests.
