English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
If only thou couldst see when the guilty will hang down their heads before their Lord, and say, ‘Our Lord, we have seen and we have heard, so send us back that we may do good works; for now we are convinced.’
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
اور اگر تُو دیکھ لے جب مجرم اپنے ربّ کے حضور اپنے سرجھکائے ہوں گے (اور کہیں گے کہ) اے ہمارے ربّ! ہم نے دیکھا اور سن لیا۔ پس ہمیں لوٹا دے تاکہ ہم نیک اعمال کریں۔ ہم ضرور یقین کرنے والے (ثابت) ہوں گے۔

Si seulement tu pouvais voir quand les coupables baisseront la tête devant leur Seigneur, et diront : « Notre Seigneur, nous avons vu et nous avons entendu, renvoie-nous donc afin que nous puissions faire de bonnes œuvres ; car maintenant nous sommes convaincus. »

اور اگر تجھے وہ حالت معلوم[1] ہو جائے جب کہ مجرم اپنے رب کے سامنے اپنا سر[2] ڈالے کھڑے ہوں گے اور کہہ رہے ہوں گے اے ہمارے رب! ہم نے (جو کچھ تو نے کہا تھا) دیکھ لیا اور سن لیا۔ پس اب تو ہمیں واپس لوٹا دے تا کہ تیرے حکم کے مطابق عمل کریں۔ ہم اب تیری بات پر پوری طرح یقین کر چکے ہیں[3]۔
رَاٰی کے بعد جب دو مفعول آئیں تو وہاں دل کا دیکھنا مراد ہوتا ہے نہ کہ آنکھوں کا۔ اس وجہ سے ہم نے ’’معلوم ہو جائے‘‘ ترجمہ کیا ہے دیکھنا نہیں کیا۔
عربی میں رُءُ وْ س کا لفظ جمع آیا ہے مگر اردو میں اس موقعہ پر مفرد استعمال کرتے ہیں وہی ہم نے کیا ہے۔
عربی میں بعض دفعہ شرط ظاہر کی جاتی ہے اور جزا محذوف کر دی جاتی ہے اس جگہ بھی ایسا ہی ہے اور مراد یہ ہے کہ اگر اس وقت کا نظارہ تیرے ذہن میں آجائے تو تجھے معلوم ہو جائے گا کہ وہ نہایت ہی ذلت اور شرمندگی محسوس کر رہے ہوں گے۔

If only thou couldst see when the guilty ones will hang down their heads before their Lord, and say, ‘Our Lord, we have seen and we have heard, so [b]send us back that we may do good works; for now we are convinced of the truth of what we were told.’

Commentary:
It has always happened that at the time of the appearance of a Divine Reformer, the people to whom his Message is addressed become divided into two groups: (a) those who accept his Message and follow him, and (b) those who deny and reject his Message and oppose and persecute him. This and the following several verses refer to and describe the condition and attitude of these two groups of men.
اردو ترجمہ مودودی
کاش تم دیکھو وہ وقت جب یہ مجرم سر جھکائے اپنے رب کے حضور کھڑے ہوں گے (اُس وقت یہ کہہ رہے ہوں گے) "اے ہمارے رب، ہم نے خوب دیکھ لیا اور سُن لیا اب ہمیں واپس بھیج دے تاکہ ہم نیک عمل کریں، ہمیں اب یقین آگیا ہے"

If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."

وَہُمۡ یَصۡطَرِخُوۡنَ فِیۡہَا رَبَّنَاۤ اَخۡرِجۡنَا نَعۡمَلۡ صٰلِحًا غَیۡرَ الَّذِیۡ کُنَّا نَعۡمَلُ ۚ اَوَلَمۡ نُعَمِّرۡکُمۡ مَّا یَتَذَکَّرُ فِیۡہِ مَنۡ تَذَکَّرَ وَجَآءَکُمُ النَّذِیۡرُ ۖ فَذُوۡقُوۡا فَمَا لِلظّٰلِمِیۡنَ مِنۡ نَّصِیۡرٍ

اور وہ اس میں چیخ رہے ہوں گے۔ اے ہمارے ربّ! ہمیں نکال لے۔ ہم نیک اعمال بجا لائیں گے جو اُن سے مختلف ہوں گے جو ہم کیا کرتے تھے۔ کیا ہم نے تمہیں اتنی عمر نہیں دی تھی کہ جس میں کوئی نصیحت پکڑنے والا نصیحت پکڑ سکے؟ نیز تمہارے پاس ایک ڈرانے والا بھی آیا تھا۔ پس چکھو (اپنے ظلم کا بدلہ) اور ظلم کرنے والوں کے حق میں کوئی مددگار نہیں۔

Et là ils hurleront : « Notre Seigneur, fais-nous sortir, nous ferons de bonnes œuvres différentes de celles que nous faisions. » « Ne vous avons-Nous pas accordé une vie assez longue pour que réfléchisse celui qui voulait réfléchir ? Et l’Avertisseur vous était venu. Goûtez donc le châtiment ; car les injustes n’ont aucun aide. »

E per di più è venuto a voi un ammonitore. Gustate dunque il castigo, perché i cattivi non hanno chi li aiuti.»

And they will cry out therein, "Our Lord, remove us; we will do righteousness - other than what we were doing!" But did We not grant you life enough for whoever would remember therein to remember, and the warner had come to you? So taste [the punishment], for there is not for the wrongdoers any helper.

اوروہ اس میں چلائیں گے کہ اے ہمارے رب ہمیں نکال ہم نیک کام کریں برخلاف ان کاموں کے جو کیا کرتے تھے کیا ہم نےتمہیں اتنی عمر نہیں دی تھی جس میں سمجھنے والا سمجھ سکتا تھا اور تمہارے پاس ڈرانے والا آیا تھا پس مزہ چکھو پس ظالموں کا کوئی مددگار نہیں
