Said one who had knowledge of the Book, ‘I will bring it to thee before thy noble messengers return to thee.’ And when he saw it set before him, he said, ‘This is by the grace of my Lord, that He may try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. And whosoever is grateful is grateful for the good of his own soul; but whosoever is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Self- Sufficient, Generous.’

وہ شخص جس کے پاس کتاب کا علم تھا اس نے کہا میں اسے تیرے پاس لے آؤں گا پیشتر اس سے کہ تیرا نگہبان دستہ تیری طرف لوٹ آئے۔ پس جب اس نے اسے اپنے پاس پڑا پایا تو کہا یہ محض میرے ربّ کے فضل سے ہے تا کہ وہ مجھے آزمائے کہ میں شکر کرتا ہوں یا ناشکری۔ اور جو بھی شکر کرتا ہے تو اپنے نفس کے فائدہ کے لئے شکر کرتا ہے اور جو ناشکری کرتا ہے تو میرا ربّ یقیناً مستغنی اور صاحبِ اکرام ہے۔

Un d’entre eux qui avait une bonne connaissance du Livre dit : « Je te l’apporterai avant que tu n'aies cligné de l'oeil. » Et lorsqu’il le vit placé devant lui, il dit : « Ceci est de la grâce de mon Seigneur, afin qu’Il m’éprouve pour découvrir si je suis reconnaissant ou ingrat. Et quiconque est reconnaissant est reconnaissant pour le bien de sa propre âme ; mais quiconque est ingrat, en vérité mon Seigneur Se suffit à Lui-Même, et Il est Généreux. »

一位具有 (安拉) 经典知识的人说: “在你转瞬之间, 我将把它拿到你面前。”当他 (素莱曼) 在自己近处看到放着的那个宝座时, 他说: “这是来自我养主的恩典, 以便他考验我是感恩谢德的人, 还是忘恩负义的人。凡是感恩谢德者, 他是为了自己的好处而感恩谢德; 凡是忘恩背义者, (必须确知) 我的养主是自足的, 宽厚好施的。”

Disse uno che aveva conoscenza del libro: «Te lo porterò io, prima che tu possa batter ciglio.» E quando Egli vide il trono posto davanti a lui, esclamò: «Questo è per grazia del mio Signore, perché possa mettermi alla prova e vedere se sono riconoscente o ingrato. E chiunque sia riconoscente, è tale per il bene della sua stessa anima; ma chiunque sia ingrato, in verità il mio Signore è Autosufficiente, Generoso.»

Dijo uno que tenía conocimiento del Libro: “Te lo traeré en menos de un abrir y cerrar de ojos”. Y cuando lo vio ante él, dijo: “Esto es por la gracia de mi Señor, para probarme si soy agradecido o ingrato. ues quien es agradecido lo es ciertamente para el bien de su propia alma; mas quien es desagradecido, sepa que, en verdad, mi Señor es Auto‑Suficiente, Generoso”.

(اس پر) اس شخص [3]نے جس کو (الٰہی) کتاب کا علم حاصل تھا کہا کہ میں تیرے پاس اس (تخت) کو تیرے آنکھ جھپکنے سے پہلے لے آؤں گا۔ پس جب (سلیمان نے) اس کو پاس رکھا ہوا دیکھا تو اس نے کہا۔ یہ میرے رب کے فضل کی وجہ سے ہوا ہے تا کہ وہ مجھے آزمائے کہ میں شکر کرتا ہوں یا ناشکری کرتا ہوں اور جو شکر کرے وہ اپنی جان کے فائدہ کے لئے ایسا کرتا ہے اور جو ناشکری کرے تو یقیناً میرا رب بے نیاز (اور) بڑی سخاوت کرنے والا ہے۔

And whosoever is grateful is grateful for the good of his own soul; but whosoever is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Self-Sufficient, Gracious.’

Important Words:

طرفک (thy noble messenger) is infinitive noun from طرف (tarafa). They say طرف فلان i.e. such a one saw. طرف عینه means, his eyes moved in order to see. طرف means, the extremity or end of anything; eye, look, glance, blinking; a noble or generous man in respect of ancestry; government revenue; a messenger from Yemen. کریم الطرفین means, noble in respect of both father and mother. اطراف الارض means, the noble or exalted and the learned men of the earth. اطراف الناس means, the lower orders of the people. علی طرف means, beside, aside or apart (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The phrase قبل ان یرتد الیک طرفک may mean, (1) before thy messenger from Yemen returns to thee; (2) before the nobleman whom thou hast sent comes back to thee from Yemen; (3) in the twinkling of an eye, i.e. in a very short time; (4) before the government revenue is deposited in the treasury. In the last-mentioned meaning of طرف the expression would mean, "I would need no more money, the money already in the government treasury would be quite sufficient to meet the expenses of constructing a throne for the queen."

The expression "who had knowledge of the book" seems to refer to one who knew the intricacies of finance. He might be Solomon’s finance minister.

In this and the previous verse two offers to make the throne for Solomon have been mentioned, one by the ‘Ifrit who offered to prepare the throne before Solomon had raised his camp and started back, and the other by "the man who had knowledge." The latter made a still better offer of finishing the throne before Solomon’s messenger came back with the reply to his letter from the Queen. The context shows that Solomon accepted the second offer because he wanted to have the throne finished before the Queen came to pay her respects to him as he was to stay at that place till she had come and the whole ceremony was over. The verse also implies that all sorts of men were employed by Solomon—men of knowledge and experience, skilled and unskilled labourers, craftsmen and technicians.

Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."

چونکہ ملک یہود کا تھا اس لئے عبرانی عالم کو یقین تھا کہ یہودی میرے لئے بہت جلد کام کریں گے پس اس نے عفریت سے پہلے عرش لانے کا وعدہ کیا اور کہا کہ میں تخت کو فوراً حاضر کردوں گا۔ مختلف زبانوں میں آنکھ جھپکنے کا محاورہ جلدی پر دلالت کرتا ہے اور اسے لفظی نہیں قرار دیا جاتا۔ یہاں بھی انہیں معنوں میں استعمال ہوا ہے۔

and I am trusty.' Said he who possessed knowledge of the Book, 'I will bring it to thee, before ever thy glance returns to thee.' Then, when he saw it settled before him, he said, 'This is of my Lord's bounty that He may try me, whether I am thankful or ungrateful. Whosoever gives thanks gives thanks only for his own soul's good, and whosoever is ungrateful -- my Lord is surely All-sufficient, All-generous.'
