قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّى كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ
English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
He said, ‘O my Lord, I would prefer prison to that to which they invite me; and unless Thou turn away their guile from me I shall incline towards them and be of the ignorant.’
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
اس نے کہا اے میرے ربّ! قید خانہ مجھے زیادہ پیارا ہے اس سے جس کی طرف وہ مجھے بلاتی ہیں۔ اور اگر تُو مجھ سے اُن کی تدبیر (کا مُنہ) نہ پھیر دے تو میں ان کی طرف جھک جاؤں گا اور میں جاہلوں میں سے ہوجاؤں گا۔

Il dit : « Ô mon Seigneur, je préfère la prison à ce à quoi elles m’invitent ; et à moins que Tu ne détournes de moi leur fourberie, je pencherais vers elles, et je serais du nombre des ignorants. »

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
(یہ سن کر) اس نے (دعا کرتے ہوئے) کہا (کہ) اے میرے رب! جس بات کی طرف وہ مجھے بلاتی ہے اس کی نسبت قید خانہ میں جانا مجھے زیادہ پسند ہے اور اگر ان کی تدبیر (کے بدنتیجہ) کو تو مجھ سے نہیں ہٹائے گا تو میں ان کی طرف جھک جاؤں گا۔ اور جاہلوں[2] میں سے ہو جاؤں گا۔
یعنی تیری ہی مدد سے بچ سکتا ہوں۔ ورنہ تیری مدد کے بغیر کوئی بعیدنہیں کہ میں جاہلوں کے سے کام کرنے لگوں۔

Thereupon Joseph prayed: ‘O my Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they invite me to; and unless Thou turn away their guile from me I shall be inclined towards them and be of the ignorant.’

He said, ‘O my Lord, I would prefer prison to what they invite me; and unless Thou turn away their guile from me I shall incline towards them and be of the ignorant.’[1537]
Commentary:
It is extremely regrettable that although Potiphar’s wife, who wanted to entice Joseph into sin, herself openly confessed to his innocence and her women-guests also bore witness to Joseph’s piety, and though in the present verse Joseph himself says that through God’s special grace he was saved from inclining to the commission of the evil deed, yet some commentators, writing long centuries after the event, do not hesitate to accuse Joseph of feeling inclined towards that evilly-disposed woman.

یوسفؑ نے کہا "اے میرے رب، قید مجھے منظور ہے بہ نسبت اس کے کہ میں وہ کام کروں جو یہ لوگ مجھ سے چاہتے ہیں اور اگر تو نے ان کی چالوں کو مجھ سے دفع نہ کیا تو میں ان کے دام میں پھنس جاؤں گا اور جاہلوں میں شامل ہو رہوں گا

He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."

And spend out of that with which We have provided you before death comes upon one of you and he says, ‘My Lord! if only Thou wouldst grant me respite for a little while, then I would give alms and be among the righteous.’

اور خرچ کرو اس میں سے جو ہم نے تمہیں دیا ہے پیشتر اس کے کہ تم میں سے کسی کو موت آ جائے تو وہ کہے اے میرے ربّ! کاش تو نے مجھے تھوڑی سی مدّت تک مہلت دی ہوتی تو میں ضرور صدقات دیتا اور نیکوکاروں میں سے ہو جاتا۔

Et dépensez de ces dons et richesses que Nous vous avons accordés, avant que la mort ne surprenne l’un d’entre vous, et qu’il ne dise : « Mon Seigneur ! si seulement tu voulais m’accorder du répit pendant quelque temps, pour que je puisse faire l’aumône, et puisse être du nombre des justes ! »

Commentary:
The verse exhorts believers to make the best of their opportunities to serve the cause of truth with all the gifts that God had bestowed upon them, before death comes upon them i.e. before they lose the opportunity or the power to serve.

جو رزق ہم نے تمہیں دیا ہے اس میں سے خرچ کرو قبل اس کے کہ تم میں سے کسی کی موت کا وقت آ جائے اور اُس وقت وہ کہے کہ "اے میرے رب، کیوں نہ تو نے مجھے تھوڑی سی مہلت اور دے دی کہ میں صدقہ دیتا اور صالح لوگوں میں شامل ہو جاتا"

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."
