وَلَئِنۡ سَاَلۡتَہُمۡ لَیَقُوۡلُنَّ اِنَّمَا کُنَّا نَخُوۡضُ وَنَلۡعَبُ ۚ قُلۡ اَبِاللّٰہِ وَاٰیٰتِہٖ وَرَسُوۡلِہٖ کُنۡتُمۡ تَسۡتَہۡزِءُوۡنَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And if thou question them, they will most surely say, ‘We were only talking idly and jesting.’ Say, ‘Was it Allah and His Signs and His Messenger that you mocked at?

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور اگر تُو اُن سے پوچھے تو ضرور کہیں گے ہم تو محض گپ شپ میں محو تھے اور کھیلیں کھیل رہے تھے۔ تُو پوچھ کیا اللہ اور اس کے نشانات اور اس کے رسول سے تم استہزاءکر رہے تھے؟

French

Et si tu les interroges, ils te répondront assurément : « Nous ne faisions que bavarder, nous plaisantions. » Dis : « Vous moquiez-vous d’Allāh, de Ses Signes et de Son Messager ? »

German

Und wenn du sie fragst, so werden sie ganz gewiss sagen: "Wir plauderten nur und scherzten." Sprich: "Galt euer Spott etwa Allah und Seinen Zeichen und Seinem Gesandten?

Chinese

如果你问他们, (你们为什么说这样的话呢?) [d]他们一定要这样地回答: “我们不过是闲谈, 开玩笑。” 你 (向他们) 说: “你们对安拉、他的迹象和他的使者开玩笑吗?”

2:45.

Italian

E se li interrogherai, sicuramente risponderanno: «Erano solo chiacchiere e scherzi.» Di': «Era Allah e i Suoi segni e il Suo messaggero che voi deridevate?

Spanish

Pero si los interrogas, seguramente dirán: “hablábamos de cosas frívolas y bromeábamos”. Diles: “¿Os burlabais de Al-lah, de Sus Signos y de Su Mensajero?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور اگر تو ان سے پوچھے (کہ تم ایسی باتیں کیوں کرتے ہو) تو وہ ضرور یہی جواب دیں گے ہم تو صرف مذاق اور ہنسی کرتے تھے۔ تو ان کو جواب دیجیو کہ کیا اللہ اور اس کی آیات اور اس کے رسول سے مذاق اور ہنسی کرتے تھے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And if thou question them, [a]they will most surely say, ‘We were only talking idly and jesting.’ Say, ‘Was it Allah and His Signs and His Messenger that you mocked at?’

2:45.

English - Five Volume Translation

And if thou question them, [a]they will most surely say, ‘We were only talking idly and jesting.’ Say, ‘Was it Allah and His Signs and His Messenger that you mocked at?[1219]

2:15.

Commentary:

The verse signifies that if and when the hypocrites are asked why they make insulting remarks about the Prophet in their private meetings, they naively reply that they only diverted themselves with idle and playful discourse. The verse proceeds to rebuke them by asking whether they could get hold of nothing else than God and His Messenger to make the butt of their jokes and scoffing.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اگر ان سے پوچھو کہ تم کیا باتیں کر رہے تھے، تو جھٹ کہہ دیں گے کہ ہم تو ہنسی مذاق اور دل لگی کر رہے تھے ان سے کہو، "کیا تمہاری ہنسی دل لگی اللہ اور اُس کی آیات اور اس کے رسول ہی کے ساتھ تھی؟

English - Sahih

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

اور اگر تم ان سے دریافت کرو تو کہیں گے کہ ہم یونہی بات چیت اور دل لگی کر رہے تھےکہہ دو کیا الله سے اور اس کی آیتوں سے اور اس کے رسول سے تم ہنسی کرتے تھے

And if you ask them, surely they will say, "Only we were conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His Verses and His Messenger (that) you were mocking?"

And if thou questionest them, then assuredly they will say, 'We were only plunging and playing.' Say: 'What, then were you mocking God, and His signs, and His Messenger?

Should you question them what they were talking about, they would certainly say: "We were merely jesting and being playful." Tell them: "Was it Allah and His revelation and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

Ce sont là les Signes d’Allāh que Nous te récitons avec vérité. A quelle parole donc croiront-ils, après avoir rejeté celle d ’Allāh et Ses Signes ?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

یہ سب اللہ کے نشان ہیں جن کو ہم تیرے سامنے پوری سچائی کے ساتھ بیان کرتے ہیں پھر (بتاؤ تو) اللہ اور اس کے نشانوں کے بعد وہ کس چیز پر ایمان لائیں گے۔

These are the Signs of Allah which We rehearse unto thee with truth. In what word, then, after[2707] rejecting the Word of Allah and His Signs, will they believe?

Ba‘d means, after; in spite of; contrary to or against; in addition to (Lane).

These are the Signs of Allah which We rehearse unto thee with truth. In what word, then, after rejecting the Word of Allah and His Signs, will they believe?[3736]

Important Words:

بعد (after) has a variety of meanings, some of which are: after or afterwards; behind; before; yet; now; in spite of; contrary to or against; in addition to, or furthermore (Lane & Aqrab).

حدیث (word) means, a piece of information; an announcement; an important news; an account; a narration; a tradition; a thing or matter that is talked of; any discourse that one hears (Lane & Aqrab). See also 4:43.

Commentary:

In view of different meanings of the words بعد and حدیث given above under Important Words, the expression فبأی حدیث بعدہ یؤمنون would mean:

(i) In what word or discourse, after rejecting the Word of Allah and after rejecting His signs, will they believe?

(ii) In what word, contrary to the Word of Allah and His signs, will they believe?

(iii) In what word, after the Word of Allah and His signs have come, will they believe?

(iv) In spite of the fact that the Word of God and His signs have come to them, they do not believe in them. Then in what else would they believe?

یہ اللہ کی نشانیاں ہیں جنہیں ہم تمہارے سامنے ٹھیک ٹھیک بیان کر رہے ہیں اب آخر اللہ اور اس کی آیات کے بعد اور کون سی بات ہے جس پر یہ لوگ ایمان لائیں گے

These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe?
