16:127

وَإِنْ عَاقَبْتُمْ فَعَاقِبُوا۟ بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبْتُم بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَئِن صَبَرْتُمْ لَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لِّلصَّٰبِرِينَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And if you desire to punish the oppressors, then punish them to the extent to which you have been wronged; but if you show patience, then, surely, that is best for those who are patient.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور اگر تم سزا دو تو اتنی ہی سزا دو جتنی تم پر زیادتی کی گئی تھی اور اگر تم صبر کرو تو یقیناً صبر کرنے والوں کے لئے یہ بہتر ہے۔

French

Et si vous châtiez les oppresseurs, châtiez-les selon le tort qui vous a été fait ; mais si vous montrez de la patience, alors assurément cela est mieux pour ceux qui sont patients.

Und wenn ihr (die Unterdrücker) zu strafen (wünscht), dann bestraft (sie) in dem Maße, wie euch Unrecht zugefügt wurde; wollt ihr aber Geduld zeigen, dann ist das wahrlich das Beste für die Geduldigen.

Si deseas castigar a los opresores, castígalos en la medida en que hayas sido perjudicado; pero si muestras paciencia, entonces, es en verdad lo mejor para los pacientes.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اگر تم (لوگ زیادتی کرنے والوں کو) سزا دو تو جتنی تم پر زیادتی کی گئی ہو تم اتنی (ہی) سزا دو۔ اور (ہمیں اپنی ذات کی قسم ہے کہ) اگر تم صبر کرو گے تو صبر کرنے والوں کے حق میں وہ (یعنی صبر کرنا) بہتر ہوگا۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Commentary:

In this verse Muslims are told that when they preach Islam to other nations, the latter, instead of listening to them, will persecute and wage war against them. In such a contingency Muslims will have to take up arms in self-defence. But even when fighting in self-defence, they are not to exceed legitimate bounds, but punish the enemy only to the extent to which he has oppressed them. The word used here which implies the permission to fight and retaliate in self-defence is عاقبوا (punish). The root-meaning of this word is "to follow". The use of this word thus shows that Muslims can only fight in self-defence. jihad connotes fighting only in self-defence i.e. only after Muslims have been wantonly attacked. The Quran has taken care to explain the necessary conditions and limitations of jihad before permitting it.

اور اگر تم لوگ بدلہ لو تو بس اسی قدر لے لو جس قدر تم پر زیادتی کی گئی ہو لیکن اگر تم صبر کرو تو یقیناً یہ صبر کرنے والوں ہی کے حق میں بہتر ہے

English - Sahih

And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.

اور اگر بدلہ لو تو اتنا بدلہ لو جتنی تمہیں تکلیف پہنچائی گئی ہے اور اگر صبر کرو تو یہ صبر کرنے والوں کے لیے بہتر ہے

And if you retaliate, then retaliate with the like of what you were afflicted with [it]. But if you are patient, surely (it) is better for those who are patient.
