وَکَذَّبَ الَّذِیۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِہِمۡ وَمَا بَلَغُوۡا مِعۡشَارَ مَاۤ اٰتَیۡنٰہُمۡ فَکَذَّبُوۡا رُسُلِیۡ ۖ فَکَیۡفَ کَانَ نَکِیۡرِ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And those who were before them also rejected the truth — and these have not attained even to a tenth of that which We gave them, but they treated My Messengers as liars. So how terrible was the change I brought about!

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور اُن لوگوں نے بھی جھٹلادیا تھا جو اُن سے پہلے تھے اور یہ تو اُس کے دسویں حصہ کو بھی نہیں پہنچے جو ہم نے اُن لوگوں کو عطا کیا تھا۔ پس انہوں نے (بھی جب) میرے رسولوں کو جھٹلایا تو کیسی (سخت) تھی میری پکڑ!

French

Et ceux qui les ont devancés ont aussi rejeté la vérité – et ceux-ci n’ont pas atteint même le dixième de ce que Nous avions accordé à ceux-là – mais ils traitèrent Mes Messagers de menteurs. Aussi qu’elle fut terrible Ma réprobation !

German

Jene, die vor ihnen waren, leugneten ebenfalls – und diese haben nicht den zehnten Teil von dem erreicht, was Wir jenen gegeben –, und doch ziehen sie Meine Gesandten der Lüge. Doch wie war (die Folge) Meiner Verleugnung!

在他们之前的人们也常常诬蔑 (他们的使者) 说谎, 这个时代人们 (的力量) 还不到我赐予其前人 (力量) 的十分之一, (他们虽然不如前人, 且看到前人的天惩,) 但还是诬蔑我的使者们都是说谎的。(他们将看,) (在这种情况下,) 不信我的 (结局惩罚) 如何!

Anche quelli che li precedettero avevano rifiutato la verità - e questi attuali non hanno raggiunto neanche la decima parte di ciò che Noi demmo a quelli - ma essi trattarono i Miei messaggeri come mentitori. Quanto terribile fu il mutamento da Me causato!

Spanish

Mas quienes existieron antes que ellos, rechazarontambién la verdad, y éstos no han alcanzado ni siquiera una décima parte de lo que les dimos, pero trataron a Mis Mensajeros como mentirosos. ¡Qué terrible fue pues el cambio que Yo les traje!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جو لوگ ان سے پہلے تھے انہوں نے بھی (اپنے رسولوں کو) جھٹلایا ہی تھا اور اس زمانہ کے لوگوں کو اس طاقت کا دسواں حصہ بھی نہیں ملا جو ہم نے ان سے پہلے لوگوں کو دی تھی لیکن ان لوگوں نے (بھی باوجود پہلوں سے ذلیل ہونے کے اور ان کی سزا کو دیکھ لینے کے) ہمارے رسولوں کا انکار ہی کیا۔ سو (اب دیکھ لیں کہ ان حالات میں) میرے انکار کا نتیجہ (یعنی عذاب) کیسا ہوتا ہے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And those who were before them also rejected the truth and these have not attained even to a tenth[2402] of the power which We gave them, but they rejected My Messengers. So they shall see how terrible are the consequences of denying Me.

Mi‘shar means, a tenth part; a hundredth part; according to some a thousandth part (Lane).

English - Five Volume Translation

And those who were before them also rejected the truth—and these have not attained even to a tenth of that which We gave them, but they treated My Messengers as liars. So they shall see how terrible are the consequences of denying Me![3167]

Important Words:

معشار (a tenth) is derived from عشر (‘ashara). They say عشر الـمال i.e. he took the tenth part of the property. عشرھم means, he took one from them, they being ten. عشر (‘ushrun) and عشیر and معشار all mean, a tenth; a tenth part; one of ten parts. Some say معشار means, a hundredth part, yet according to some others it means, a thousandth part (Lane).

Commentary:

This verse demolishes the second objection of the disbelievers. It means to say that if they are proud of their wealth, power and position and are rejecting the Message of Islam because of the weakness and poverty of the Holy Prophet and his followers, then they should know that peoples much more powerful than they and possessing resources far in excess of theirs were destroyed when they rejected their Prophets. How do they then expect to escape Divine punishment by rejecting the Holy Prophet? They should know that they will fail against the Prophet, and their failure will prove that he is a true Prophet of God.

اِن سے پہلے گزرے ہوئے لوگ جھٹلا چکے ہیں جو کچھ ہم نے اُنہیں دیا تھا اُس کے عشر عشیر کو بھی یہ نہیں پہنچے ہیں مگر جب انہوں نے میرے رسولوں کو جھٹلایا تو دیکھ لو کہ میری سزا کیسی سخت تھی

English - Sahih

And those before them denied, and the people of Makkah have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But the former peoples denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach.

اوران لوگوں نے بھی جھٹلایا جو ان سے پہلے تھے اور یہ لوگ اس کے دسویں حصہ کونہیں پہنچے جو ہم نے انہیں دیا تھا پس انہوں نے میرے رسولوں کو جھٹلایا پھر میرا کیسا عذاب ہوا

And denied those who (were) before them and not they have attained a tenth (of) what We (had) given them. But they denied My Messengers, so how was My rejection?

Those that were before them also cried lies, yet they reached not a tenth of what We gave them; they cried lies to My Messengers, and how was My horror!

Those who went before them also denounced (Allah's Messengers) as liars. They have not attained even a tenth of what We had given them. But when they rejected My Messengers, calling them liars, how terrible was My chastisement!

Those before them had also denied, and they could not reach a tenth of (the possibilities) We had given them, and still they called My apostles liars. How great was the change that I wrought in their condition then!
