وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ جَعَلَكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ عَادٍ وَبَوَّأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِن سُهُولِهَا قُصُورًا وَتَنْحِتُونَ ٱلْجِبَالَ بُيُوتًا ۖ فَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ ءَالَآءَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

And remember the time when He made you inheritors of His favours after ‘Ad, and assigned you an abode in the land; you build palaces in its plains, and you hew the mountains into houses. Remember, therefore, the favours of Allah and commit not iniquity in the earth, causing disorder.’

عَثَا۔ یَعْثٰی کے معنے بھی فساد کرنے کے ہوتے ہیں اور عربی کا قاعدہ ہے کہ جب اسی لفظ کو جس کا فعل آیا ہو دہرایا جائے تو ایسا تاکید کے لئے ہوتا ہے۔ پس چونکہ لَا تَعْثَوْ کے معنے بھی تھے ’’فساد مت کرو‘‘ اور اس کے بعد مُفْسِدِیْنَ کا لفظ تاکید کے لئے بڑھایا گیا ہے۔ اس آیت کے معنے ہوئے ’’جان بوجھ کر فساد مت کرو‘‘ یعنی اگر یہ کام بے جانے ہوتا تب بھی بُرا ہوتا۔ مگر تم کو تو خدا کے رسول نے متنبہ کر دیا تھا۔ پھر بھی تم باز نہیں آتے۔ اس لئے سزا کے مستحق ہو۔

The words, you build palaces in its plains, refer to the winter residences of the tribe, while the expression, and you hew the mountains into dwellings, allude to their summer resorts in the hills. The tribe of Thamud were a cultured people––industrious, wealthy and resourceful. Judged by the standards of their time, they led a luxurious and comfortable life, going up to the hills in the hot season and spending their winter in the plains.

بواکم (assigned you an abode). بوا is derived from باء which means, he returned. بواہ منزلا means, he lodged him in an abode. بوأله منزلا means, he prepared for him an abode and assigned or gave him a place therein (Lane).

The words, you build palaces in its plains, refer to the winter residences of the tribe, while the expression, and you hew the mountains into houses, allude to their summer residences in the hills. This verse shows that the Thamud were a civilized, powerful and rich people. They had separate summer and winter resorts and led secure and comfortable lives. Even when they went to the hills in summer for recreation and change of climate and left their winter habitations, they felt free from attacks from any quarter. The verse also hints at the highly developed state of their architecture.

کانوا ینحتون (they used to hew out). نحت means, he cut or hewed; or he formed or fashioned by cutting or paring or clipping. The Arabs say نحت علی الکرم (in the passive voice) i.e. he was fashioned after the model of generosity, viz. he was generous by nature (Lane).

بیوتا (houses) is the plural of بیت which is derived from بات i.e. he passed the night. بیت means, a chamber; a house or dwelling; a tent. It also means, a verse (Lane).

Commentary:

The latter i.e. فرہ (fariha) means, he exulted or rejoiced above measure, or he exulted greatly and behaved insolently and ungratefully, the letter ھ in this verb being substituted for the letter ح (Lane & Aqrab).
