اور (اس وقت کو بھی یاد کرو) جب ہم نے تم سے عہد لیا تھا کہ تم (آپس میں) اپنے خون[2] نہ بہاؤ گے اور اپنے آپ کو (یعنی اپنی قوم کے لوگوں کو) اپنے گھروں سے نہ نکالو گے اور تم نے (اس کا) اقرار کر لیا تھا اور تم (اس عہد کے متعلق ہمیشہ) گواہی دیتے رہے ہو[3]۔

And remember when We took a covenant from you: ‘You shall not shed each other’s blood nor turn your people out of your homes,’[117] then you confirmed it; and you have been witness to it.
The reference may be to the covenant between the Holy Prophet and the Jews of Medina by which both sides undertook to help each other against a common enemy and all disputes were to be referred to the Holy Prophet for decision (Muir’s 'Life of Mahomet' & 'Sirat' by Mirza Bashir Ahmad, M.A.).

And if We had commanded them: [c]‘Slay your people[627] or leave your homes,’ they would not have done it except a few of them; and if they had done what they are exhorted to do, it would surely have been better for them and conducive to greater strength;
6:78.
The words, Uqtulu Anfusakum, do not mean "slay yourselves" but "slay your people" (2:55), or "lay down your lives in the cause of God".

Commentary:
This verse refers to the hypocrites of Medina. The words اقتلوا انفسکم (kill your people) do not mean "kill yourselves" because suicide has been declared in Islam to be unlawful.
The expression انفسکم simply means "your people" (see note on 2:55). The Refugees had to leave their hearths and homes and had to kill their own disbelieving kith and kin in the war that had been forced upon them by the latter.

And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].

Commentary:

Commentary:
The verse makes it clear that the commandment to Muslims to have nothing to do with disbelievers has a proviso. It applies only to those disbelievers, as the next verse shows, who are at war with Muslims and are inimically disposed towards Islam. Friendly relations as such with non-Muslims are not forbidden. Besides, extra emphasis has been laid, in this verse, on kind and equitable treatment of non-Muslims.
The fact that this and the following verse were revealed at a time when relations between Muslims and disbelievers were highly strained helps to understand the real purpose and object of the prohibitory commandment.

Commentary:

اللہ تم کو صرف ان لوگوں سے (دوستی کرنے سے) روکتا ہے جنہوں نے تم سے دینی اختلاف کی وجہ سے جنگ کی اور جنہوں نے تم کو گھروں سے نکالا یا تمہارے نکالنے پر تمہارے دوسرے دشمنوں کی مدد کی اور جو لوگ بھی ایسے لوگوں سے دوستی کریں وہ ظالم ہیں۔

Allah only forbids you respecting those who have fought against you on account of your religion and have driven you out of your homes, and have helped others in driving you out, that you make friends with them, and whosoever makes friends with them—it is these that are the transgressors.

وہ تمہیں جس بات سے روکتا ہے وہ تو یہ ہے کہ تم اُن لوگوں سے دوستی کرو جنہوں نے تم سے دین کے معاملہ میں جنگ کی ہے اور تمہیں تمہارے گھروں سے نکالا ہے اور تمہارے اخراج میں ایک دوسرے کی مدد کی ہے اُن سے جو لوگ دوستی کریں وہی ظالم ہیں
English - Sahih
Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

تمہیں الله انہیں سے منع کرتا ہے کہ جو دین میں تم سے لڑے اورانہوں نے تمہیں تمہارے گھروں سے نکال دیا اور تمہارے نکالنے پر (لوگوں کی) مدد بھی کی کہ ان سے دوستی کرو اورجس نے ان سے دوستی کی تو پھر وہی ظالم بھی ہیں
