وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا۟ لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِۦ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And when they issued forth to encounter Jalut and his forces, they said: ‘O our Lord, pour forth steadfastness upon us, and make our steps firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.’

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

پس جب وہ جالوت اور اس کے لشکر کے مقابلہ کے لئے نکلے تو انہوں نے کہا اے ہمارے ربّ! ہم پر صبر نازل کر اور ہمارے قدموں کو ثبات بخش اور کافر قوم کے خلاف ہماری مدد کر۔

Et quand ils sortirent pour affronter Jālūt et ses soldats, ils dirent : « Ô notre Seigneur, verse sur nous la fermeté, affermis nos pas et aide-nous contre le peuple mécréant. »

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جب وہ جالوت اور اس کی فوجوں (کے مقابلہ) کے لئے نکلے تو انہوں نے کہا کہ اے ہمارے رب ہم پر قوت برداشت نازل کر اور (میدان جنگ میں) ہمارے قدم جمائے رکھ اور (ان) کافروں کے خلاف ہماری مدد کر۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And when they issued forth to encounter Jalut[311] and his forces, they said, ‘O our Lord, [a]pour forth steadfastness upon us, and make our steps firm, and [b]help us against the disbelieving people.’

Jalut spoken of in this verse does not signify a person but a people, while the word "forces" points to the helpers and associates of these people. The Bible refers to Jalut under the name of Midianites who pillaged and harassed the Israelites and destroyed their land for several years (Judg. 6: 1-6). The Amalekites and all the eastern tribes assisted the Midianites in their raids (Judg. 6: 3) and formed "the forces" referred to in the verse.

Commentary:

The trial by water referred to in the preceding verse and the subsequent exhortation mentioned in the concluding clause of that verse seem to have filled the Israelites with hope and courage. Consequently their prayer in the verse under comment does not betray a defeatist tendency as heretofore shown by them, but a buoyant spirit of hope and good cheer.

اور جب وہ جالوت اور اس کے لشکروں کے مقابلہ پر نکلے، تو انہوں نے دعا کی: "اے ہمارے رب ہم پر صبر کا فیضان کر، ہمارے قدم جما دے اور اس کافر گروہ پر ہمیں فتح نصیب کر"

And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
