There are some among the Jews who pervert words from their proper places. And they say, ‘We hear and we disobey,’ and ‘hear thou without being heard,’ and ‘Ra‘ina,’ screening with their tongues what is in their minds and seeking to injure the Faith. And if they had said, ‘We hear and we obey,’ and ‘hear thou,’ and ‘Unzurna,’ it would have been better for them and more upright. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief; so they believe but little.

یہود میں سے ایسے بھی ہیں جو کلمات کو ان کی اصل جگہوں سے بدل دیتے ہیں۔ اور وہ کہتے ہیں ہم نے سنا اور ہم نے نافرمانی کی اور بات سُن اس حال میں کہ تجھے کچھ بھی نہ سنائی دے اور وہ اپنی زبانوں کو بل دیتے ہوئے اور دین میں طعن کرتے ہوئے رَاعِنَا کہتے ہیں۔ اور اگر ایسا ہوتا کہ وہ کہتے کہ ہم نے سنا اور ہم نے اطاعت کی اور سُن اور ہم پر نظر کر، تو یہ ان کے لئے بہتر اور سب سے زیادہ مضبوط (قول) ہوتا۔ لیکن اللہ نے ان کے کفر کی وجہ سے ان پر لعنت کر دی ہے۔ پس وہ ایمان نہیں لاتے مگر تھوڑا۔

French

Il en est certains chez les Juifs qui faussent le sens des mots ; ils disent : « Nous entendons et nous désobéissons » et « Entends sans qu’on t’entende » et « Rā‘inā, » cachant avec leur langue ce qu’ils ont dans la pensée en vue de nuire à la Foi. Et s’ils avaient dit : « Nous entendons et nous obéissons » et « entends » et « Unẓurnā » (jette un regard sur nous), cela aurait mieux valu pour eux et aurait été plus droit. Mais Allāh les a maudits à cause de leur mécréance ; ainsi ils croient bien peu.

Es gibt welche unter den Juden, die Worte aus ihren Stellungen verdrehen und sagen: "Wir hören und wir gehorchen nicht", und "Höre, ohne gehört zu werden", und "Sei uns nachsichtig"*, indem sie mit ihren Zungen lügen und den Glauben verlästern. Und hätten sie gesagt: "Wir hören und wir gehorchen", und "Höre", und "Schaue gnädig auf uns"*, es wäre besser für sie gewesen und aufrechter. Fra gli ebrei ve ne sono alcuni che travisano le parole rispetto al senso proprio. Ed essi dicono: «Noi udiamo e disobbediamo» e «ascolta senza essere ascoltato»; e essi dicono: «Ra‘ina», mascherando con la lingua quello che è nella loro mente e tentando di offendere la fede. E se avessero detto: «Noi ascoltiamo e obbediamo» e «Ascolta» e «Unzurna» sarebbe stato meglio per loro, e più retto.* Ma Allah li ha maledetti per la loro mancanza di fede; così non hanno fede, se non poca.

Hay entre los judíos quienes cambian las palabras de su lugaradecuado y dicen: “Oímos y desobedecemos”, “escucha tú sin ser oído” y “nuestro Pastor”, profiriendo con sus lenguas lo que hay en sus mentes e intentando injuriar la fe. Y si hubiesen dicho “oímos y obedecemos”, “escucha tú” y “Unzurna”, habría sido mejor y más recto para ellos. Pero Al-lah los maldijo por su incredulidad; porque no creen sino poco.

جو لوگ یہودی ہیں ان میں سے بعض (خدا کی) باتوں کو ان کی جگہوں سے ادل بدل دیتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں کہ ہم نے سنا اور باوجود اس کے ہم نے نافرمانی کی اور (کہتے ہیں کہ) تو ہماری باتیں سن (خدا کا کلام) تجھے کبھی نہ سنایا جائے اور ہمارا لحاظ کر (یہ بات) اپنی زبانوں سے جھوٹ بولتے[2] ہوئے اور دین میں طعن کرتے ہوئے (کہتے ہیں) اور اگر وہ یوں کہتے کہ ہم نے سنا اور ہم نے مان لیا اور (کہتے کہ) سن اور ہم پر (رحمت کی) نظر کر تو ان کے لئے بہتر اور زیادہ درستی کا موجب ہوتا (مگر وہ اس سے نہ صرف محروم رہے) بلکہ اللہ نے ان کے کفر کی وجہ سے ان پر لعنت کی اس لئے وہ ایمان نہیں لاتے[3]۔

جو لوگ یہودی بن گئے ہیں اُن میں کچھ لوگ ہیں جو الفاظ کو اُن کے محل سے پھیر دیتے ہیں اور دین حق کے خلاف نیش زنی کرنے کے لیے اپنی زبانوں کو توڑ موڑ کر کہتے ہیں سَمِعنَا وَ عَصَینَا اور اِسمَع غَیر مُسمَع اور رَاعِنَا حالانکہ اگر وہ کہتے سَمِعنَا وَ اَطَعنَا، اور اِسمَع اور اُنظُرنَا تو یہ انہی کے لیے بہتر تھا اور زیادہ راستبازی کا طریقہ تھا مگر ان پر تو ان کی باطل پرستی کی بدولت اللہ کی پھٹکار پڑی ہوئی ہے اس لیے وہ کم ہی ایمان لاتے ہیں

English - Sahih

Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages and say, "We hear and disobey" and "Hear but be not heard" and "Ra'ina," twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], "We hear and obey" and "Wait for us [to understand]," it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.

یہودیوں میں بعض ایسے ہیں جو الفاظ کو ان کے محل سے پھیر دیتے ہیں او ر کہتے ہیں ہم نے سنا اور نہ مانا او رکہتے ہیں کہ سن نہ سنایا جائے تو اور کہتے ہیں راعِنا اپنی زبان کو مروڑ کر اور دین میں طعن کرنے کے خیال سےاور اگر وہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم نے سنا اور ہمنے مانا اور سن تو اور ہم پر نظر کو تو ان کے حق میں بہتر اور درست ہوتا لیکن ان کے کفر کے سبب سے الله نے ا ن پر لعنت کی سو ان میں سے بہت کم لوگ ایمان لائیں گے

Of those who are Jews, they distort the words from their places and they say, "We hear[d] and we disobey[ed]" and "Hear not to be heard and "Raina" twisting [with] their tongues and defaming [in] the religion. And if [that] they (had) said, "We hear[d] and we obey[ed]" and "Hear and look (at) us," surely it (would) have been better for them and more suitable. یعنی منہ سے تو رَاعِنَا کہہ دیتے ہیں مگر ان کے دل اس سے متفق نہیں ہوتے۔ دل میں وہ رسول کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو حقیر سمجھتے ہیں اور خیال کرتے ہیں کہ اس سے کسی رعایت کی طلب کی ہمیں کوئی ضرورت نہیں۔

عربی کے لفظ ہیں فَـلَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ اِلَّا قَلِیْـلًا جن کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ وہ صرف قلیل ایمان لاتے ہیں۔ مگر محاورہ میں اس کے معنے بالکل ایمان نہ لانے کے ہیں۔

Some of the Jews pervert words from their meanings saying, 'We have heard and we disobey' and 'Hear, and be thou not given to hear' and 'Observe us,' twisting with their tongues and traducing religion. If they had said, 'We have heard and obey' and 'Hear' and 'Regard us,' it would have been better for them, and more upright; but God has cursed them for their unbelief so they believe not except a few.

Among those who have become Jews there are some who alter the words from their context, and make a malicious play with their tongues and seek to revile the true faith. They say: 'We have heard and we disobey' (sami'na wa 'asayna), 'Do hear us, may you turn dumb' (isma' ghayr musma') and 'Hearken to us' (ra'ina). It would indeed have been better for them and more upright if they had said: 'We have heard and we obey' (sami'na wa ata'na) and: 'Do listen to us, and look at us (with kindness)' (wa isma' wa unzurna). But Allah has cursed them because of their disbelief. Scarcely do they believe.

Some among the Jews distort the words out of context and say (in place of the right words): "We have heard and do not obey;" and, "hear without hearing," and "listen to us," twisting their tongues and reviling the faith. But if they had said: "We have heard and obey," and, "hear and regard us," it would have been better for them and more appropriate. But God has disgraced them for their lack of belief; and so only a few of them believe.

Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places, and say: "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not Heard"; and "Ra'ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to Faith. Commentary:

The verb یقولون (they say) is used in Arabic both for words of mouth, and for what one expresses by one’s condition or conduct (see 2:31). In this verse, the expression has been used of the Jews in both these senses, viz. "They say with their tongues that they have heard and obeyed, but their conduct shows that instead of obeying they disobey and defy."

The expression غیر مسمع (without being heard) gives a number of meanings: (1) mayest thou not be made to hear, i.e. mayest thou not hear by reason of deafness; (2) mayest thou not hear any speech or news which thou wouldst like or which may please thee; (3) may not what thou sayest be accepted, or may not thy invitation be accepted and thy call responded to; (4) mayest thou not be obeyed; or (5) the expression may mean, though it was not certainly intended by the Jews, mayest thou not hear anything offensive or unpleasant.

The Jews used the aforesaid ambiguous expressions in order (1) to conceal what evil thoughts they entertained about the Holy Prophet; (2) to make Muslims imitate them and use analogous expressions while addressing the Holy Prophet; and (3) to taunt Muslims with regard to matters affecting their religion, saying to them in effect, "We speak to your Prophet jestingly and abuse him in ambiguous words; if he had been a true Prophet of God, he would have certainly come to know of this."
