Then there has come an evil generation after them who inherited the Book. They take the paltry goods of this low world and say, ‘It will be forgiven us.’ But if there came to them similar goods again, they would take them. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them, that they would not say of Allah anything but the truth? And they have studied what is therein. And the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are righteous. Will you not then understand?

پس ان کے بعد ایسے جانشینوں نے اُن کی جانشینی کی جنہوں نے کتاب ورثہ میں پائی وہ اس دنیا کے عارضی فائدہ کو پکڑ بیٹھے اور کہتے تھے ہمیں بخش دیا جائے گا۔ اگر اسی طرح کا مال اُن کے پاس آتا وہ اسے لے لیتے تھے۔ کیا اُن سے کتاب کا میثاق جو اُن پر فرض تھا نہیں لیا گیا تھا کہ وہ اللہ پر حق کے سوا کوئی بات نہیں کہیں گے اور وہ پڑھ چکے تھے جو اس میں تھا۔ اور آخری گھر ان لوگوں کے لئے جو تقویٰ اختیار کرتے ہیں بہتر ہے۔ پس کیا تم عقل نہیں کروگے؟

French

Puis leur succéda une mauvaise génération qui hérita du Livre. Ils s’accrochent à des bénéfices temporaires de ce bas-monde et disent : « Cela nous sera pardonné. » Mais si des bénéfices semblables leur venaient de nouveau, ils les accepteraient. Le pacte du Livre ne fut-il pas établi avec eux, qu’ils ne diraient d’Allāh rien que la vérité ? Et ils ont étudié ce qui s’y trouve. Et la Demeure de l’au-delà est meilleure pour ceux qui agissent avec droiture. Ne voulez-vous donc pas comprendre ?

Es folgten ihnen Nachkommen, die die Schrift erbten; sie greifen aber nach den armseligen Gütern dieser niedrigen (Welt) und sagen: "Es wird uns verziehen werden." Doch wenn (abermals) derartige Güter zu ihnen kämen, sie griffen wiederum danach. Ward denn der Bund der Schrift nicht mit ihnen geschlossen, dass sie von Allah nichts aussagen würden als die Wahrheit? Und sie haben gelesen, was darin steht. Aber die Wohnung im Jenseits ist besser für die Gottesfürchtigen. Wollt ihr denn nicht begreifen?

[e]可是在先前的 (以色列) 人 (过世) 以后, 另一代 (以色列) 人起来了, (在表面看来) 他们继承穆撒的经典, 但 (实质上) 他们只是不断赚取今世的财富, 并 (向人们) 说: “安拉一定饶恕我们。” 但假如有同样的财富来到, 他们还是要得到它。在穆撒的经典里没有记载他们关于安拉只说真话的许约? 凡在这部经典里的, 他们都读过了。(他们知道) [a]后世的居所对敬畏的人是好的。难道你们不了解?

Poi succedette loro una generazione malvagia, che ereditò il libro. Essi si presero i miseri beni di questo basso mondo, e dissero: «Questo ci sarà perdonato.» Ma se venissero loro dati nuovamente simili beni, li prenderebbero. Ma non era stato accettato da loro il patto del libro, che non avrebbero affermato di Allah nient'altro che la verità? Eppure essi avevano studiato quello che vi era contenuto. E la dimora dell'Aldilà è migliore per i giusti. Non volete dunque comprendere?

Después vino tras ellos una generación malvada que heredó el Libro. Toman los bienes despreciables de este mundo vil y dicen: “se nos perdonará”. Pero si les llegaran de nuevo bienes similares, los tomarían. ¿Acaso no se estableció con ellos el pacto del Libro, para que no dijeran de Al-lah nada que no fuera la verdad? Y han estudiado lo que hay en él. Mas la morada del Más Allá es mejor para los justos. ¿No podéis pues comprenderlo?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

مگر پہلے بنی اسرائیل کے بعد کچھ اور (بنی اسرائیل) کھڑے ہو گئے ہیں‘ جو (بظاہر) کتاب موسیٰ کے وارث ہیں لیکن (درحقیقت) اس ورلی دنیا کے اموال حاصل کرتے رہتے ہیں اور (لوگوں سے) کہتے ہیں اللہ ضرور ہمیں بخش دے گا اور اگر ان کے پاس ویسا ہی کچھ اور مال آجائے تو اسے بھی لینے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں۔ کیا ان سے (موسیٰ کی) کتاب میں یہ وعدہ نہیں لیا گیا تھا کہ اللہ کے متعلق صرف سچ بولا کریں اور جو کچھ اس کتاب میں ہے وہ انہوں نے پڑھ لیا ہے اور (یہ جانتے ہیں) کہ آخرت کا گھر متقیوں کے لئے اچھا ہے۔ کیا تم (یہ بات) سمجھتے نہیں؟

[b]Then there came after them an evil generation who inherited the Book. They take the paltry[1067] goods of this low world and say, ‘It will be forgiven us.’ But if there came to them similar goods again, they would take them. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them, that they would not say of Allah anything but the truth? And they have studied[1068] what is therein. پھر اگلی نسلوں کے بعد ایسے نا خلف لوگ ان کے جانشین ہوئے جو کتاب الٰہی کے وارث ہو کر اِسی دنیائے دنی کے فائدے سمیٹتے ہیں اور کہہ دیتے ہیں کہ توقع ہے ہمیں معاف کر دیا جائے گا، اور اگر وہی متاع دنیا پھر سامنے آتی ہے تو پھر لپک کر اسے لے لیتے ہیں کیا ان سے کتاب کا عہد نہیں لیا جا چکا ہے کہ اللہ کے نام پر وہی بات کہیں جو حق ہو؟ اور یہ خود پڑھ چکے ہیں جو کتاب میں لکھا ہے آخرت کی قیام گاہ تو خدا ترس لوگوں کے لیے ہی بہتر ہے، کیا تم اتنی سی بات نہیں سمجھتے؟

English - Sahih

And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason?

پھر ان کے بعد ان کے ایسے جانشین ہوئے جو کتاب کے وارث بنے اس ادنیٰ زندگی کا مال و متاع لےلیتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں کہ ہمیں معاف کر دیا جائے گا اور اگر ایسا ہی مال ان کے سامنے پھر آئے تو اسے لے لیتے ہیں کیا ان سے کتاب میں عہد نہیں لے لیا گیا تھا کہ الله کے سوا سچ کے اور کچھ نہ کہیں اور انہوں نے جو کچھ اس میں لکھا ہے پڑھا ہے اور آخرت کا گھر ڈرنے والوں کے لیے بہتر ہے کیا تم سمجھتے نہیں

Then succeeded from after them successors (who) inherited the Book taking goods (of) this the lower (life) and they say, "It will be forgiven for us." And if comes to them goods similar to it they will take it. Was not taken on them Covenant (of) the Book that not they will say about Allah except the truth while they studied what (is) in it? And the home (of) the Hereafter (is) better for those who fear Allah. So will not you use intellect?

And there succeeded after them a succession who inherited the Book, taking the chance goods of this lower world, and saying, 'It will be forgiven us'; and if chance goods the like of them come to them, they will take them. Has not the compact of the Book been taken touching them, that they should say concerning God nothing but the truth? And they have studied what is in it; and the Last Abode is better for those who are godfearing. Do you not understand?

Then others succeeded them who inherited the scriptures, and yet kept themselves occupied in acquiring the goods of this world and kept saying: 'We shall be forgiven.' And when there comes to them an opportunity for acquiring more of those goods, they seize it. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them that they would not ascribe to Allah anything but the truth? And they have read what is in the Book and know that the abode of the Hereafter is better for the God-fearing. Do you not understand?

Yet they will accept similar things if they came their way again. Had they not been covenanted in the Book to say nothing in the name of God but the truth? And they have read this in it. After them succeeded an (evil) generation: They inherited the Book, but they chose (for themselves) the vanities of this world, saying (for excuse): "(Everything) will be forgiven us." Important Words:

خلف (an evil generation) is a substantive from خلف (khalafa) meaning, he came after, succeeded or remained after another. خلف means, the location or quarter that is behind; the time past; the side corresponding to the front; one who remains after another, or persons remaining after others; a remnant of people; a generation after a generation; a bad son; an evil generation; one or more persons in whom there is no good; a thing in which there is no good (Lane & Aqrab). See also 2:31; 7:70.

عرض (paltry goods) is derived from عرض. They say عرض له الشیء i.e. he presented, showed or offered the thing to him. عرضmeans, a thing that befalls or happens to a man, such as disease, misfortune and the like; a thing that is not permanent; the paltry goods of the present world; worldly goods or commodities; booty or spoil; an object of desire; an eager desire or covetousness (Lane & Aqrab).

درسوا (they have studied) is from درس i.e. (1) he read or studied a book; (2) it became effaced, erased or obliterated; (3) he effaced, erased or obliterated something (Lane). See also 6:106.

Commentary:

The Book spoken of in this verse is the Bible and the expression, who inherited the Book, means who received the Book as a sacred trust from God through the Prophets, or through those gone before them.

The words درسوا ما فیه (they have studied what is therein) may also be rendered as "they have obliterated or effaced what is therein", meaning that they were taught the Divine Book, but they forgot it and rendered it as something effaced and obliterated.
