وَجَعَلُوۡا لِلّٰہِ مِمَّا ذَرَاَ مِنَ الۡحَرۡثِ وَالۡاَنۡعٰمِ نَصِیۡبًا فَقَالُوۡا ہٰذَا لِلّٰہِ بِزَعۡمِہِمۡ وَہٰذَا لِشُرَکَآئِنَا ۖ فَمَا کَانَ لِشُرَکَآئِہِمۡ فَلَا یَصِلُ اِلَی اللّٰہِ ۖ وَمَا کَانَ لِلّٰہِ فَہُوَ یَصِلُ اِلٰی شُرَکَآئِہِمۡ ۗ سَآءَ مَا یَحۡکُمُوۡنَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And they have assigned Allah a portion of the crops and cattle which He has produced, and they say, ‘This is for Allah,’ as they imagine, ‘and this is for our idols.’ But that which is for their idols reaches not Allah, while that which is for Allah reaches their idols. Evil is what they judge.

اور انہوں نے اللہ کے لئے اُس میں سے جو اُسی نے کھیتیوں اور مویشیوں میں سے پیدا کیا بس ایک حصہ مقرر کر رکھا ہے اور وہ اپنے زُعم میں کہتے ہیں یہ اللہ کے لئے ہے اور یہ ہمارے شریکوں کے لئے ہے۔ پس جو اُن کے شریکوں کے لئے ہے وہ تو اللہ کو نہیں پہنچتا، ہاں جو اللہ کا ہے وہ ان کے شریکوں کو مل جاتا ہے۔ کیا ہی برُ ا ہے جو وہ فیصلہ کرتے ہیں۔

French

Et ils ont attribué à Allāh une part des récoltes qu'Il a produites et des bestiaux qu’Il a créés, et ils disent : « Ceci est pour Allāh » – comme ils se l’imaginent – « et ceci est pour nos divinités. » Mais ce qui est pour leurs divinités n’arrive pas jusqu’à Allāh, tandis que ce qui est pour Allāh arrive à leurs divinités. Très mauvaise est la conclusion qu’ils en tirent.

Sie haben für Allah einen Anteil ausgesetzt an den Feldfrüchten und dem Vieh, das Er wachsen ließ, und sie sagen: "Das ist für Allah", wie sie meinen, "und das ist für unsere Götzen". Aber was für ihre Götzen ist, das erreicht Allah nicht, während das, was für Allah ist, ihre Götzen erreicht. Übel ist, wie sie urteilen.

Ed essi hanno riservato per Allah una parte dei raccolti e del bestiame che Egli ha prodotto; ed essi dicono: «Questo è per Allah», mentre pensano: «e questo è per i nostri idoli.» Ma quello che è destinato ai loro idoli non giunge ad Allah, mentre quello che è destinato ad Allah giunge ai loro idoli. La loro conclusione è malvagia.

Spanish

Ellos asignan a Al-lah una parte de los cultivos y del ganado que Él ha producido, y dicen: “esto es para Al-lah”, según piensan ellos, “y esto es para nuestros ídolos”. Pero lo que es para sus ídolos no llega a Al-lah, mientras que lo que es para Al-lah llega a sus ídolos. ¡Qué malo es lo que concluyen!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور انہوں نے ایک حصہ اس کھیتی میں سے یا جانوروں میں سے اللہ کا مقرر (کر چھوڑا) ہے جو (کھیتی یا جانور) اس (یعنی خدا) نے پیدا کئے ہیں۔ پھر اپنے گمان سے کہتے ہیں کہ اتنا تو اللہ کے لئے ہے اور اتنا ہمارے شریکوں کے لئے۔ پھر یہ دعوے کرتے ہیں کہ جو ان کے شریکوں کا (حصہ) ہوتا ہے وہ تو اللہ کو نہیں پہنچتا اور جو اللہ کا (حصہ) ہوتا ہے وہ ان کے شریکوں کو پہنچ جاتا ہے وہ کیا ہی برا فیصلہ کرتے ہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And [d]they have assigned Allah a portion of the crops and cattle which He has produced, and they say, ‘This is for Allah,’—so they assert—‘and this is for our associate-gods.’ But that which is for their associate-gods reaches not Allah, while that which is for Allah reaches their associate-gods. Evil is what they judge.[914]

16:57.

The reference is to an idolatrous custom of the Arabs. They would divide the produce of their lands between God and their deities. If the portion which they set apart for their deities was spent for other purposes, then the portion which they had reserved for God was given away as charity in the name of their deities, but if the portion set apart for God was spent for other ends, then the portion set aside for the deities was not transferred to God.

Commentary:

Note the point and the force in the words, He has produced. By using these words, the Quran exposes the folly of disbelievers who are presumptuous enough to divide the produce of the earth and cattle between their deities and God, as if they were the owners; while the fact is that God is the owner of all these things and it is He Who has brought them into existence. They are God’s things, and it is strange that disbelievers should presume to divide God’s things according to their own choice, setting apart only a portion for God, the True Owner, and allotting the rest to their false deities.

Disbelievers gave two kinds of alms; firstly, in the name of God, and secondly, in the name of their deities. If the portion which they set apart for their deities was spent for other purposes, then the portion which they had reserved for God was also given away as charity in the name of their deities, but if the portion set apart for God was spent for other ends, then the portion set aside for the deities was not transferred to God. That is what is meant by the words, that which is for their idols reaches not Allah, while that which is for Allah reaches their idols. This is another instance of how men blunder, making laws with the sole aid of reason.

The expression, as they imagine, signifies that God does not accept a charity which false gods are made to share with Him. Disbelievers suppose that they have set apart a portion for God, but that is not really the portion of God, for the jealous God disdainfully rejects such allotment.

اِن لوگوں نے اللہ کے لیے خود اُسی کی پیدا کی ہوئی کھیتیوں اور مویشیوں میں سے ایک حصہ مقرر کیا ہے اور کہتے ہیں یہ اللہ کے لیے ہے، بزعم خود، اور یہ ہمارے ٹھیرائے ہوئے شریکوں کے لیے پھر جو حصہ ان کے ٹھیرائے ہوئے شریکوں کے لیے ہے وہ تو اللہ کو نہیں پہنچتا مگر جو اللہ کے لیے ہے وہ ان کے شریکوں کو پہنچ جاتا ہے کیسے برے فیصلے کرتے ہیں یہ لوگ!

English - Sahih

And the polytheists assign to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, "This is for Allah," by their claim, "and this is for our partners [associated with Him]." But what is for their "partners" does not reach Allah, while what is for Allah - this reaches their "partners." Evil is that which they rule.

اور الله کی پیدا کی ہوئی کھیتی اور مویشیوں میں سے ایک حصہ اس کے لیے مقرر کرتے ہیں اور اپنے خیال کے مطابق کہتے ہیں کہ یہ الله کا حصہ ہے اور یہ ہمارے شریکوں کا ہے سو جو حصہ ان کے شریکوں کا ہے وہ الله کی طرف نہیں جا سکتا اور جو الله کا ہے وہ ان کے شریکوں کی طرف جا سکتا ہے کیسا برا فیصلہ کرتے ہیں

English - Arberry

They appoint to God, of the tillage and cattle that He multiplied, a portion, saying, 'This is for God' -- so they assert -- 'and this is for our associates.' So what is for their associates reaches not God; and what is for God reaches their associates. Evil is their judgment!

English - Maududi

They assign to Allah a portion out of the produce and cattle that He has created, saying out of their fancy: 'This is for Allah' - so they deem -'and this is for the associates (of Allah) whom we have contrived.' Then, the portion assigned to the beings whom they have set up as associates (of Allah) does not reach Allah, but the portion assigned to Allah reaches the beings they set up as associates (of Allah)! Indeed evil is what they decide!

اور وہ اپنے زُعم کے مطابق کہتے ہیں یہ مویشی اور کھیتیاں ممنوع ہیں (یعنی) اُنہیں کوئی نہ کھائے مگر وہی جس کے متعلق ہم چاہیں، اور اسی طرح ایسے چوپائے ہیں جن کی پیٹھیں (سواری کے لئے) حرام کردی گئیں اور ایسے مویشی بھی جن پر وہ اللہ کا نام نہیں پڑھتے اُس پر افترا کرتے ہوئے۔ وہ انہیں ضرور سزا دے گا اس کی جو وہ افترا کرتے ہیں۔

Et ils disent : « Tels ou tels bestiaux ou telle ou telle récolte sont interdits ; personne n’a le droit d’en manger, sauf ceux que nous voudrons » – voilà ce qu’ils affirment. Il y a aussi des bestiaux dont le dos est interdit, et il y a des bestiaux sur lesquels ils ne prononcent pas le nom d’Allāh, inventant un mensonge contre Lui ; Il ne tardera pas à les rétribuer pour ce qu’ils ont inventé.

By "forbidden crops" are meant such cultivated fields as were dedicated to the idols. These could be used only by the priests that attended upon them.

The cattle mentioned in 5:104. They were not used for riding or as beasts of burden.

Important Words:

حجر (forbidden). حجرہ (hajara-hu) means, he prevented or prohibited or forbade or interdicted him; or tie deprived him. حجر (hijr) means, forbidden or prohibited or unlawful; the faculty of reason or understanding because it prevents one from doing improper acts. The word also means custody or guardianship (Aqrab).

Commentary:

This verse gives another instance of the absurdity of man-made laws.

By "forbidden crops" are meant such cultivated fields as were dedicated to idols. These could be used only by the priests that attended upon the idols. The cattle might eat of all crops except those that were dedicated to idols.

The cattle whose backs were forbidden are those mentioned in 5:104. Nobody was allowed to ride them or use them as beasts of burden.

The cattle over which they pronounce not the name of Allah are the cattle which they dedicated to their associate-gods. There is no reference here to the mentioning of God’s name at the time of slaughtering.

کہتے ہیں یہ جانور اور یہ کھیت محفوظ ہیں، ا نہیں صرف وہی لوگ کھا سکتے ہیں جنہیں ہم کھلانا چاہیں، حالانکہ یہ پابندی ان کی خود ساختہ ہے پھر کچھ جانور ہیں جن پر سواری اور بار برداری حرام کر دی گئی ہے اور کچھ جانور ہیں جن پر اللہ کا نام نہیں لیتے، اور یہ سب کچھ انہوں نے اللہ پر افترا کیا ہے، عنقریب اللہ انہیں ان افترا پرداز یوں کا بدلہ دے گا

And they say, "These animals and crops are forbidden; no one may eat from them except whom we will," by their claim. And there are those [camels] whose backs are forbidden [by them] and those upon which the name of Allah is not mentioned - [all of this] an invention of untruth about Him. He will punish them for what they were inventing.

اور کہتے ہیں یہ جانور اور کھیت محفوظ ہیں انہیں صرف وہی لوگ کھا سکتے ہیں جنہیں ہم چاہیں اورکچھ جانور ہیں جن پر سواری حرام کر دی گئی ہے اور کچھ جانور ہیں جن پر الله کا نام نہیں لیتے یہ سب الله پر افتراء ہے عنقریب الله انہیں اس افترا کی سزا دے گا

All that they say, forging against God; He will assuredly recompense them for what they were forging.

They say: 'These animals and these crops are sacrosanct: none may eat of them save those whom we will' - imposing interdictions of their own contriving. And they declare that it is forbidden to burden the backs of certain cattle, and these are the cattle over which they do not pronounce the name of Allah. All these are false fabrications against Allah, and He will soon requite them for all that they fabricate.
