وَقَالَ الَّذِیۡنَ اَشۡرَکُوۡا لَوۡ شَآءَ اللّٰہُ مَا عَبَدۡنَا مِنۡ دُوۡنِہٖ مِنۡ شَیۡءٍ نَّحۡنُ وَلَاۤ اٰبَآؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمۡنَا مِنۡ دُوۡنِہٖ مِنۡ شَیۡءٍ ۚ کَذٰلِکَ فَعَلَ الَّذِیۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِہِمۡ ۚ فَہَلۡ عَلَی الرُّسُلِ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِیۡنُ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Those who set up equals to God say: ‘If Allah had so willed, we should not have worshipped anything beside Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor should we have forbidden anything without command from Him.’ So did those who were before them. But are the Messengers responsible for anything except the plain delivery of the Message?

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور اُن لوگوں نے جنہوں نے شرک کیا کہا اگر اللہ چاہتا تو ہم نے اس کے سوا کسی چیز کی عبادت نہ کی ہوتی ، نہ ہم نے نہ ہمارے آباءواجداد نے ۔اور نہ ہی ہم نے اُس کے سوا کسی چیز کو حرمت دی ہوتی۔ اسی طرح ان لوگوں نے کیا تھا جو اُن سے پہلے تھے۔ پس کیا پیغمبروں پر کھلا کھلا پیغام پہنچانے کے سوا بھی کچھ فرض ہے؟

French

Et les associateurs disent : « Si Allāh l’avait voulu, nous n’aurions rien adoré d’autre que Lui, ni nous ni nos ancêtres, et nous n’aurions rien interdit sans un ordre de Lui. » Ainsi firent leurs devanciers. Mais incombe-t-il aux Messagers autre chose que la transmission claire du Message ?

German

Die Götzendiener sprechen: "Hätte Allah es so gewollt, wir würden nichts außer Ihm angebetet haben, weder wir noch unsere Väter, noch würden wir etwas verboten haben ohne (Befehl von) Ihm." So taten schon jene, die vor ihnen waren. Jedoch, sind die Gesandten für irgendetwas verantwortlich, außer für die deutliche Verkündigung?

E quelli che mettono altri alla pari di Dio dicono: «Se Allah avesse voluto, noi non avremmo adorato nulla all'infuori di Lui, né noi, né i nostri padri, né avremmo vietato nulla senza un Suo comando.» Così fecero coloro che vennero prima di loro. Ma i messaggeri sono forse responsabili d'altro se non della semplice consegna del messaggio?

Quienes elevan partícipes iguales a Dios dicen: “Si Al-lah lo hubiese querido, no habríamos adorado a nada en vez de a Él, ni nosotros ni nuestros padres, ni habríamos prohibido nada sin una orden Suya”. Lo mismo dijeron quienes los precedieron. Pero ¿son responsables los Mensajeros de algo salvo de la simple entrega del Mensaje?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جن لوگوں نے شرک (کا طریق اختیار) کیا۔ انہوں نے (یہ بھی) کہا ہے کہ اگر اللہ (یہی) چاہتا (کہ اس کے سوا کسی کی عبادت نہ کی جائے) تو نہ ہم اس کے سوا کسی چیز کی عبادت کرتے اور نہ ہمارے باپ دادا ایسا کرتے اور نہ (ہی) ہم اس کے (فرمانے کے) بغیر کسی چیز کو (خود بخود) حرام ٹھہراتے جو (لوگ) ان سے پہلے (سچائی کے دشمن) تھے انہوں نے (بھی) ایسا ہی کیا تھا بھلا (یہ اتنا بھی نہیں سوچتے کہ) رسولوں پر (خدا کا پیغام) پہنچا دینے کے سوا اور کیا ذمہ داری ہے۔

Commentary:

In this verse a very common but very foolish objection of disbelievers has been mentioned, viz. if God had disapproved of their beliefs and actions, He should have weaned them by force from their idolatrous doctrines and deeds. Since He has not done so, it shows that He does not disapprove of them. Before proceeding to give a detailed answer in the next verse to this manifestly absurd contention, the Quran gives a general answer in this verse. The verse purports to say that if it had been the will of God to use force, His Prophets would have forced disbelievers to give up their idolatrous beliefs and evil practices. But not a single instance is on

record of a Prophet having employed force for the propagation of his religion and for compelling people to believe in him.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

یہ مشرکین کہتے ہیں "اگر اللہ چاہتا تو نہ ہم اور نہ ہمارے باپ دادا اُس کے سوا کسی اور کی عبادت کرتے اور نہ اُس کے حکم کے بغیر کسی چیز کو حرام ٹھیراتے" ایسے ہی بہانے اِن سے پہلے کے لوگ بھی بناتے رہے ہیں تو کیا رسولوں پر صاف صاف بات پہنچا دینے کے سوا اور بھی کوئی ذمہ داری ہے؟

And those who associate others with Allah say, "If Allah had willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything through other than Him." Thus did those do before them. So is there upon the messengers except [the duty of] clear notification?

اور مشرک کہتے ہیں اگر الله چاہتا تو ہم اس کے سوا کسی چیز کی عبادت نہ کرتے اور نہ ہمارے باپ دادا اور اس کے حکم کے سوا ہم کسی چیز کو حرام نہ ٹھیراتے اسی طرح کیا ان لوگو ں نے جو ان سے پہلے تھے پھر رسولوں کے ذمہ تو صرف صاف پہنچا دینا ہے

And said those who associate partners (with Allah), "If Allah (had) willed not we (would) have worshipped other than Him any thing, we and not our forefathers and not we (would) have forbidden other than Him anything." The idolators say, 'If God had willed we would not have served; apart from Him, anything, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden, apart from Him, anything.' So did those before them; yet is aught for the Messengers, but to deliver the manifest Message?

Those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity say: "Were Allah to will so, neither we nor our forefathers would have worshipped any other than Him, nor would we have prohibited anything without His command." Their predecessors proffered similar excuses. Do the Messengers have any other duty but to plainly convey the Message?

The idolaters say: "If God had willed we would not have worshipped anything apart from Him, nor would our fathers have done, nor would we have forbidden any thing without His (leave)." اور وہ کہتے ہیں اگر رحمن (خدا) چاہتا تو ہم اس کے سوا دوسرے معبودوں کی پرستش نہ کرتے۔ یہ بات وہ محض ڈھکونسلے سے کہتے ہیں اس کا انہیں حقیقی علم ہرگز حاصل نہیں۔

Commentary:

It is human nature that man always tries to shift the responsibility for his sins to others. Here quite unblushingly the idolaters protest that they are helpless creatures in the hands of God. If He had so willed, He would have stopped them from idol-worship.

The words "they have no knowledge whatsoever of that," signify that no reason or argument based on knowledge can be adduced in support of idol worship. It is all based on foolish conjecture and surmise.

یہ کہتے ہیں "اگر خدائے رحمٰن چاہتا (کہ ہم اُن کی عبادت نہ کریں) تو ہم کبھی اُن کو نہ پوجتے" یہ اس معاملے کی حقیقت کو قطعی نہیں جانتے، محض تیر تکے لڑاتے ہیں

And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but falsifying.
