أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَثَارُوا۟ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَعَمَرُوهَآ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَمَرُوهَا وَجَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Have they not travelled in the earth so that they might see how evil was the end of those who were before them? They were stronger than these in power, and they tilled the soil and populated it more and better than these have populated it. And their Messengers came to them with manifest Signs. And Allah would not wrong them, but they wronged their own souls.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور کیا انہوں نے زمین میں سیر نہیں کی تاکہ وہ غور کرسکتے کہ ان لوگوں کا انجام کیسا ہوا جو اُن سے پہلے تھے۔ وہ قوت میں ان سے زیادہ شدید تھے اور انہوں نے زمین کو پھاڑا اور اسے اس سے زیادہ آباد کیا تھا جیسا اِنہوں نے اُسے آباد کیا ہے اور ان کے پاس بھی ان کے رسول کھلے کھلے نشان لے کر آئے تھے۔ پس اللہ ایسا نہیں کہ ان پر ظلم کرتا بلکہ وہ خود اپنی جانوں پر ظلم کرتے تھے۔

French

N’ont-ils pas parcouru la terre pour voir combien mauvaise fut la fin de ceux qui les ont devancés ? Ils étaient plus forts que ceux-ci, et ils cultivaient la terre et la peuplaient plus et mieux que ceux-ci ne l’ont peuplée. Et leurs Messagers vinrent à eux avec des Signes manifestes. Et Allāh ne voulait pas leur faire du tort, mais ils ont fait du tort à leur propre âme.

German

Sind sie denn nicht auf der Erde umhergereist, so dass sie sehen konnten, wie das Ende derer war, die vor ihnen waren? Jene waren stärker als sie an Kraft, und sie bebauten das Land und bevölkerten es mehr, als diese es bevölkert haben. Und ihre Gesandten kamen zu ihnen mit offenkundigen Zeichen. Und Allah wollte ihnen kein Unrecht antun, sondern sich selbst haben sie Unrecht getan.

[b]他们不曾周游大地, 观察他们前人的结局如何? 前人比他们更有力量, 更好地耕种了大地, 比他们更多、(更好) 地使大地繁荣。他们的使者带着明显的迹象来临。[c]安拉并没亏负他们, 但他们却亏负了他们自己。

Non sono andati in giro sulla terra, per vedere quanto cattiva sia stata la fine di quelli che vennero prima di loro? Erano molto più forti di questi, e avevano coltivato e popolato la terra assai più e assai meglio di quanto non abbiano fatto questi. E i loro messaggeri s'erano recati da loro con segni chiari. E non fu Allah a far torto ad essi. Furono loro a far torto alle proprie anime.

¿Acaso no han viajado por la tierra para poder ver qué malo fue el fin de los que les antecedieron? Fueron más uertes que éstos en poder, araron la tierra y la poblaron más y mejor de lo que la han poblado éstos. Y sus Mensajeros llegaron a ellos con Signos manifiestos. Mas Al‑lah no les perjudicó, sino que ellos mismos perjudicaron sus propias almas.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

کیا وہ زمین میں نہیں پھرے اور یہ نہیں دیکھا کہ جو ان سے پہلے لوگ تھے ان کا انجام کیا ہوا تھا؟ وہ ان سے زیادہ طاقتور تھے اور انہوں نے زمین کو خوب اکھیڑا (یعنی ہل چلایا) تھا اور اسے اس سے زیادہ آباد کیا تھا جو انہوں نے کیا ہے اور ان کے رسول ان کے پاس دلائل لے کر آئے تھے کیونکہ اللہ کی شان کے مطابق نہ تھا کہ ان پر ظلم کرتا۔ بلکہ وہ لوگ خود اپنی جانوں پر ظلم کر رہے تھے۔

Important Words:

أثاروا (tilled) is derived from ثار which means, it was or became raised or stirred up; it spread; it rose. ثار الماء means, the water flowed forth with force; it gushed forth. أثارہ means, he raised or roused him or it. أثار الارض means, he tilled the ground or land; he cultivated it by ploughing and sowing. أثار الفتنة بینھم means, he excited mischief amongst them (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The verse indicates that there had lived in the past people who had attained to a very high stage of civilization and culture; particularly they had made great progress in the art of architecture, mining and cultivation. Recent researches in archaeology have borne testimony to this fact. The Quran had referred to this fact fourteen hundred years ago.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اور کیا یہ لوگ کبھی زمین میں چلے پھرے نہیں ہیں کہ اِنہیں اُن لوگوں کا انجام نظر آتا جو اِن سے پہلے گزر چکے ہیں؟ وہ اِن سے زیادہ طاقت رکھتے تھے، اُنہوں نے زمین کو خوب ادھیڑا تھا اور اُسے اتنا آباد کیا تھا جتنا اِنہوں نے نہیں کیا ہے اُن کے پاس ان کے رسول روشن نشانیاں لے کر آئے پھر اللہ ان پر ظلم کرنے والا نہ تھا، مگر وہ خود ہی اپنے اوپر ظلم کر رہے تھے

English - Sahih

Have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidences. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

کیا انہوں نے ملک میں پھر کر نہیں دیکھا کہ ان سے پہلوں کا کیسا انجام ہوا وہ ان سے بھی بڑھ کر قوت والے تھے اور انہوں نے زمین کو جوتا تھا اور ان سے بہت زیادہ آباد کیا تھا اور ان کے پاس ان کے رسول معجزات لے کر بھی آئے تھے پھر الله ایسا نہ تھا کہ ان پر ظلم کرتا بلکہ وہی اپنے نفسوں پر ظلم کرتے تھے

Have not they traveled in the earth and observed how was (the) end (of) those before them? They were mightier than them (in) strength, and they dug the earth and built (on) it more than what they have built (on) it. And came (to) them their Messengers with clear proofs. English - Arberry

What, have they not journeyed in the land and beheld how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than themselves in might, and they ploughed up the earth and cultivated it more than they themselves have cultivated it; and their Messengers came to them with the clear signs; and God would never wrong them, but themselves they wronged.

English - Maududi

Have they not travelled through the earth that they may observe what was the end of their predecessors who were far mightier and tilled the land and built upon it more than these have ever built? And Allah's Messengers came to them with Clear Signs. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but it is they who wronged themselves.

Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves.

They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). They were stronger than these in power, and they dug the earth and built upon it more than these have built. Messengers of their own came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Surely Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves.
