Have not the tidings come to you of those before you, the people of Noah, and the tribes of ‘Ad and Thamud, and those after them? None knows them now save Allah. Their Messengers came to them with clear Signs, but they turned their hands to their mouths, and said, ‘We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent and surely, we are in disquieting doubt concerning that to which you call us.’

کیا تم تک ان لوگوں کی خبر نہیں آئی جو تم سے پہلے تھے یعنی نوح کی قوم کی اور عاد اور ثمود کی اور ان لوگوں کی جو اُن کے بعد تھے۔ انہیں اللہ کے سوا کوئی نہیں جانتا۔ ان کے پاس ان کے رسول کھلے کھلے نشانات لے کر آئے تو انہوں نے (تکبر کرتے ہوئے) اپنے ہاتھ اپنے مونہوں میں رکھ لئے اور کہا یقیناً ہم اس چیز کا جس کے ساتھ تم بھیجے گئے ہو اِنکار کرتے ہیں اور یقیناً ہم اس کے بارہ میں، جس کی طرف تم ہمیں بلاتے ہو، بے چین کردینے والے شک میں مبتلا ہیں۔

Les nouvelles de vos devanciers ne vous sont-elles pas parvenues, du peuple de Noé, et des ‘Ād et des Thamūd, et de ceux qui leur ont succédé ? Personne ne les connaît maintenant sauf Allāh. Leurs Messagers vinrent à eux avec des Signes manifestes, mais avec arrogance ils apposèrent leurs mains sur leurs bouches, et dirent : « Nous ne croyons pas en ce avec quoi vous avez été envoyés, et assurément nous avons un doute inquiétant sur ce vers quoi vous nous appelez. »

Kam nicht zu euch die Kunde von jenen, die vor euch waren, von dem Volk Noahs und (den Stämmen) ´Âd und Thamûd, und von denen, die nach ihnen lebten? Niemand kennt sie außer Allah. Non vi è giunta notizia di coloro che vennero prima di voi, il popolo di Noè, e le tribù di ‘Ad e Tamud, e quelli che le seguirono? Nessuno le conosce ora, salvo Allah. I loro messaggeri vennero ad essi con chiari segni, ma quelli portarono le mani alla bocca* e dissero: «Non crediamo in ciò con cui siete stati mandati, e certo siamo pieni di dubbi inquietanti riguardo a quello a cui voi ci chiamate.»

¿No os han llegado las noticias de quienes os precedieron: las gentes de Noé, y las tribus de Ad y Zamud y de los que los sucedieron? Nadie los conoce ahora salvo Al‑lah. Sus Mensajeros llegaron a ellos con Signos evidentes, pero se pusieron las manos en la boca, diciendo: "No creemos en lo que te ha sido revelado y en verdad estamos en una gran duda respecto a aquello a lo que nos convocáis."

کیا جو لوگ تم سے پہلے تھے یعنی نوح کی قوم اور عاد اور ثمود اور جو ان کے بعد ہوئے ان کی نسبت دلوں کو ہلا دینے والی خبر تمہیں نہیں پہنچی (وہ ایسے نابود ہوئے اور مٹائے گئے کہ) اللہ کے سوا (اب) انہیں کوئی (بھی) نہیں جانتا۔ (جب) ان کے پاس ان کے رسول (ہمارے) روشن نشان لیکر آئے‘ تو انہوں نے ان کی بات نہ مانی اور کہا (کہ) جس (تعلیم) کے ساتھ تمہیں بھیجا گیا ہے اس کا (تو) ہم انکار کر چکے ہیں اور جس بات کی طرف تم ہمیں بلاتے ہو اس کے متعلق ہم ایک بے چین کر دینے والے شک میں (پڑے ہوئے) ہیں۔

Important Words:

نبأ (tidings) is the noun-infinitive, from نبأ (naba’a). They say انباہ ایاہ i.e. he informed him of it. نبأ means, information or a piece of information; an announcement; news or tidings; an account; a narrative or story; an announcement of great utility, from which results either great knowledge or predominance of opinion; news which fills the heart of a person with horror and makes it tremble (Lane, Aqrab & Kulliyat).

ایدیھم (their hands). ایدی is the plural of ید which among other things means, the arm from the shoulder-joint to the extremities of the fingers; palm of the hand; honour; dignity; power; predominance or mastery; good or favour done to a person (Aqrab & Lane). See also 5:65; 9:29.

Commentary:

The words, and those after them. None knows them now save Allah, clearly indicate that Prophets were also raised among nations other than the progeny of Abraham, for, as the verse makes clear, the tribes of ‘Ad and Thamud were followed by some about whom None knows now save Allah, whereas the Prophets that appeared among the progeny of Abraham have been mentioned both in the Quran and the Bible. So the words, None knows them now save Allah, evidently refer to Prophets other than those that appeared among the descendants of Abraham. The words signify that the Prophets referred to have not been mentioned in any of the revealed Books which have remained partially or wholly intact.

The words, they turned their hands to their mouths, have been taken by some commentators to mean that disbelievers turned their hands to their own mouths in amazement at the high-sounding claims of the Prophets. To express wonder in this way is really a form of derision. In this sense the expression would mean that disbelievers treated the Prophets of God with contempt. The words may, however, also mean that disbelievers put their hands on their mouths in a way so as to wish the Prophets to be silent and cease talking about their claims. It is a general practice that when a person desires another person to keep silent, he sometimes puts his hand or occasionally one of his fingers on his own mouth as a sign for the other person to keep silent.

Taking the word ید in the sense of favour or gift, the expression would mean that disbelievers threw the favours of the Prophet in their faces, telling them to keep their teachings to themselves as they (the disbelievers) did not want them. The words that follow support this meaning.

کیا تمہیں اُن قوموں کے حالات نہیں پہنچے جو تم سے پہلے گزر چکی ہیں؟ قوم نوحؑ، عاد، ثمود اور اُن کے بعد آنے والی بہت سی قومیں جن کا شمار اللہ ہی کو معلوم ہے؟ اُن کے رسول جب اُن کے پاس صاف صاف باتیں اور کھلی کھلی نشانیاں لیے ہوئے آئے تو اُنہوں نے اپنے منہ میں ہاتھ دبا لیے اور کہا کہ "جس پیغام کے ساتھ تم بھیجے گئے ہو ہم اس کو نہیں مانتے اور جس چیز کی تم ہمیں دعوت دیتے ہو اُس کی طرف سے ہم سخت خلجان آمیز شک میں پڑے ہوئے ہیں"

Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."
