يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ شَهَٰدَةُ بَيْنِكُمْ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ حِينَ ٱلْوَصِيَّةِ ٱثْنَانِ ذَوَا عَدْلٍ مِّنكُمْ أَوْ ءَاخَرَانِ مِنْ غَيْرِكُمْ إِنْ أَنتُمْ ضَرَبْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَصَٰبَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ تَحْبِسُونَهُمَا مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَيُقْسِمَانِ بِٱللَّهِ إِنِ ٱرْتَبْتُمْ لَا نَشْتَرِى بِهِۦ ثَمَنًا وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَىٰ ۙ وَلَا نَكْتُمُ شَهَٰدَةَ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّمِنَ ٱلْءَاثِمِينَ
English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
O ye who believe! the right evidence among you, when death presents itself to one of you, at the time of making a bequest, is of two just men from among you; or of two others not from among you, if you be journeying in the land and the calamity of death befall you. You shall detain them both after Prayer for giving evidence; if you doubt, they shall both swear by Allah, saying, ‘We take not in exchange for this any price, even though he be a near relation, and we conceal not the testimony enjoined by Allah; surely, in that case, we should be among the sinners.’
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
اے وہ لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو! جب تم میں سے کسی تک موت آ پہنچے تو تمہارے درمیان شہادت کے طور پر وصیت کے وقت اپنے میں سے دو صاحبِ عدل گواہوں کا تقرر ضروری ہے۔ البتہ اگر تم زمین میں سفر کر رہے ہو اور تمہیں موت کی مصیبت آ لے تو اپنوں کی بجائے غیروں میں سے دو گواہ بنا سکتے ہو۔ تم ان دونوں کو کسی نماز کے بعد روک لو۔ اور اگر تمہیں شک ہو تو وہ دونوں اللہ کی قسم کھا کر یہ اقرار کریں کہ ہم اس (گواہی) کے بدلے ہرگز کوئی قیمت وصول نہیں کریں گے خواہ کوئی (ہمارا) قریبی ہی ہو۔ اور ہم اللہ کی مقرر کردہ گواہی نہیں چھپائیں گے تب تو ہم یقیناً گنہگاروں میں سے ہو جائیں گے۔
French
Ô vous qui croyez ! Lorsque la mort se présentera à l’un d’entre vous, le témoignage au moment de faire un testament doit être celui de deux hommes équitables choisis parmi vous ; ou de deux autres qui ne soient pas d’entre vous, au cas où vous seriez en voyage dans le pays et que le malheur de la mort vous surprendrait. Vous les retiendrez tous deux après la Prière pour qu’ils rendent témoignage, et si vous avez des doutes, alors tous les deux devront jurer par le nom d’Allāh en disant : « Nous n’acceptons aucun prix en échange de ceci, quand bien même il s’agirait d’un proche parent, et nous ne dissimulons pas le témoignage prescrit par Allāh. Sûrement, dans ce cas, nous serons du nombre des pécheurs. »

O die ihr glaubt! Wenn der Tod an einen von euch herantritt, ist die Zeugenschaft unter euch im Zeitpunkt der Testamenteröffnung: zwei Redliche unter euch, oder zwei andere, die nicht zu euch gehören, wenn ihr gerade im Land herumreiset und das Unglück des Todes euch trifft. Ihr sollt sie beide nach dem Gebet zurückhalten; und wenn ihr zweifelt, so sollen sie beide bei Allah schwören: "Wir erstehen damit keinen Gewinn, handelte es sich auch um einen nahen Verwandten, und wir verhehlen nicht das Zeugnis Allahs; wahrlich, wir wären sonst Sünder."

信仰的人啊! 当你们有人临终作遗嘱时, 你们中间作证 (的方法) 当是从你们中固定两个公正的证人; 如果在外边旅行时, 遭到死亡的不幸, (在没有信仰者作证的情况下,) 可以从不信者中固定两个证人。假若你们 (对他们的作证有所) 怀疑, 那么, 在礼拜后, 把他们留下来, 让他们凭安拉立誓, 说: “即使他 (我们为其作证的人) 是我们的近亲, 我们在作证中也将不考虑任何 (自己的) 好处, [a]我们不隐藏安拉所固定的作证, 假如这样做, 我们将成为罪人。”

O voi che credete! Ci vorranno dei giusti testimoni, quando la morte si presenti ad uno di voi, al momento di decidere dell'assegnazione dei vostri beni. Saranno due uomini giusti scelti fra voi; o due altri che non siano scelti fra voi, se la disgrazia della morte vi colpisse mentre compite un viaggio sulla terra. Dopo la preghiera, li tratterrete entrambi per far testimonianza; e, se sarete in dubbio, ambedue dovranno giurare su Allah dicendo: «Non accetteremo alcun prezzo per questo, anche se chi ce lo offra fosse un parente prossimo, e non terremo celata la testimonianza ingiunta da Allah; senza dubbio, se così facessimo, saremmo dei peccatori.»

¡Oh vosotros, los que creéis! cuando se presente la muerte a uno e vosotros, en el momento de otorgar un legado, el testimonio adecuado será el de dos hombres justos de entre vosotros; o de otros dos que no sean de los vuestros si estáis de viaje por el país y os alcanza la desgracia de la muerte. Retendréis a ambos después de la Oración para que den testimonio; y si dudáis, ambos deberán jurar por Al-lah, diciendo: “no hemos cobrado nada a cambio de esto, unque él sea familiar cercano nuestro, ni ocultamos el testimonio ordenado por Al-lah; porque en ese caso, en verdad, nos contaríamos entre los pecadores”.

اے مومنو! جب تم میں سے کسی کی موت (کا وقت قریب) آجائے تو وصیت کے وقت تمہاری آپس کی گواہی (کا) یوں (طریق) چاہیئے کہ تم میں سے دو عدل والے گواہ (مقرر) ہوں یا دو گواہ (جو تم مسلمانوں میں سے نہ ہوں بلکہ) غیر لوگوں میں سے ہوں (یہ قاعدہ اس حالت میں ہوگا) جب تم ملک میں سفر کر رہے ہو اور تم پر موت کی مصیبت نازل ہو جائے (اور تم کو اپنے گواہ میسر نہ آئیں) (اس صورت میں) تم (مومنوں کا گروہ) ان دونوں (گواہوں) کو نماز کے بعد روک لے اور وہ دونوں (اس صورت میں کہ) تمہیں (ان کی گواہی کے متعلق) شبہ ہو۔ اللہ کی قسم کھا کر کہیں کہ ہم اس (شہادت) سے کوئی (اپنا) فائدہ مدنظر نہیں رکھتے خواہ (جس کے حق میں ہم گواہی دے رہے ہوں) وہ ہمارا قریبی ہی کیوں نہ ہو اور ہم اللہ کی (مقرر کردہ) شہادت (یعنی سچ بولنے کے فرض) کو نہیں چھپائیں گے اگر ہم ایسا کریں تو اس (صورت میں) ہم گنہگار ہونگے۔
English - Short Commentary Translation
O ye who believe! The right evidence among you, when death comes to one of you, at the time of making a will, is of two just men from among you; or of two others not from among you, in case you be journeying in the land and the calamity of death befalls[800] you. You shall detain them both after Prayer[801] for giving evidence; and if you have doubt concerning their evidence, they shall both swear by Allah, saying, ‘We will not take for this any price, even though the person affected thereby be a near relation, nor will we [a]hide the testimony enjoined by Allah; surely, in that case, we shall be among the sinners.’

An incident is reported to have occurred in the time of the Holy Prophet which throws some light on this and the following two verses. A Muslim who died far from home entrusted his goods to two Christian brothers—Tamim Dariy and ‘Adi—before his death and asked them to deliver the same to his heirs at Medina. On receiving the goods the heirs found that a silver bowl was missing. The two men were thereupon called to explain the loss of the bowl, but they denied all knowledge of it on oath. Later, the heirs of the deceased person happened to see the bowl with some persons at Mecca who told them that it had been sold to them by the two men to whom the deceased had entrusted his belongings. Thereupon the two men were again summoned, and in their presence the heirs of the belongings stated on oath that the bowl was theirs, whereupon it was handed over to them (Manthur).
The Prayer should preferably be the ‘Asr (Late Afternoon) Prayer, because it was after this Prayer that the Holy Prophet summoned the two witnesses to whom reference has been made above and who were believed to have stolen the silver bowl. The time after Prayer has been chosen with a view to inspiring the witnesses with God-fearingness and inclining their minds to truthfulness. If the witnesses be non-Muslims, then they may be called upon to swear after the time of their own worship, so that the solemnity of the hour may incline them to make true statement.

اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو، جب تم میں سے کسی کی موت کا وقت آ جائے اور وہ وصیت کر رہا ہو تو اس کے لیے شہادت کا نصاب یہ ہے کہ تمہاری جماعت میں سے دو صاحب عدل آدمی گواہ بنائے جائیں، یا اگر تم سفر کی حالت میں ہو اور وہاں موت کی مصیبت پیش آ جائے تو غیر مسلموں ہی میں سے دو گواہ لے لیے جائں پھر اگر کوئی شک پڑ جائے تو نماز کے بعد دونوں گواہوں کو (مسجد میں) روک لیا جائے اور وہ خدا کی قسم کھا کر کہیں کہ "ہم کسی ذاتی فائدے کے عوض شہادت بیچنے والے نہیں ہیں، اور خواہ کوئی ہمارا رشتہ دار ہی کیوں نہ ہو (ہم اس کی رعایت کرنے والے نہیں) اور نہ خدا واسطے کی گواہی کو ہم چھپانے والے ہیں، اگر ہم نے یسا کیا تو گناہ گاروں میں شمار ہوں گے"

O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest - [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you. Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt [their testimony, saying], "We will not exchange our oath for a price, even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of Allah. Indeed, we would then be of the sinful."

اے ایمان والو! جب کہ تم میں سے کسی کو موت آ پہنچے تو وصیت کے وقت تمہارے درمیان تم میں سے معتبر آدمی گواہ ہو نے چاہیئیں یا تمہارے سوا دو گواہ اور ہوں اگر تم نے زمین پر سفر کیاہو پھر تمہیں موت کی مصیبت آ پہچنے ان دونوں کو نماز کے بعد کھڑا کرو وہ دونوں الله کی قسمیں کھائیں اگر تمہیں کہیں شبہ ہو کہ ہم قسم کے بدلے مال نہیں لیتے اگرچہ رشتہ داری ہی کیوں نہ ہو اور ہم الله کی گواہی نہیں چھپاتے ورنہ ہم بے شک گناہگار ہوں گے

(Take) testimony among you when approaches one of you [the] death, (at the) time (of making) [the] a will two men, just, among you, or two others from other than you if you (are) travel(ing) in the earth then befalls you calamity (of) [the] death. Detain both of them from after the prayer and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt, "Not we will exchange it for a price even if he is (of) a near relative, and not we will conceal testimony (of) Allah. O believers, the testimony between you when any of you is visited by death, at the bequeathing, shall be two men of equity among you; or two others from another folk, if you are journeying in the land and the affliction of death befalls you. Them you shall detain after the prayer, and they shall swear by God, if you are doubtful, 'We will not sell it for a price, even though it were a near kinsman, nor will we hide the testimony of God, for then we would surely be among the sinful'

Believers! When death approaches you, let two men of equity among you act as witnesses when you make your bequest; or let two of those from others than yourselves act as witnesses if you are on a journey when the affliction of death befalls you. Then if any doubt occurs you shall detain both of them (in the mosque) after the Prayer, and they shall swear by Allah: 'We shall neither sell our testimony in return for any gain even though it concerns any near of kin nor shall we conceal our testimony which we owe to Allah, for then we should become among sinners.'.

Ellos los invocarán, diciendo: “¿Acaso no estábamos con vosotros?”. Responderán: “Sí, pero os dejasteis llevar por la tentación, os demorasteis y dudasteis y vuestros vanos deseos os engañaron hasta que se cumplió el designio de Al-lah. Y el Engañador os confundió respecto a Al-lah.

وہ (منافق) مومنوں سے پکار کر کہیں گے‘ کیا ہم تمہارے ساتھ نہ تھے؟ وہ (یعنی مومن) جواب دیں گے‘ ہاں ہاں۔ لیکن تم نے اپنی جانوں کو خود عذاب میں ڈالا۔ اور تم (ہماری تباہی کا) انتظار کرتے رہے اور شکوک و شبہات سے کام لیتے رہے اور تمہاری آرزوئیں تمہیں اس وقت تک دھوکہ دیتی رہیں کہ اللہ کا فیصلہ آگیا اوراللہ کے (تمام کاموں کے) متعلق شیطان تمہیں دھوکہ دیتا رہا۔

The hypocrites will call out to believers saying, ‘Were we not with you?’ The believers will answer, ‘Yea, but you let yourselves fall into temptation and you hesitated and doubted and your vain desires deceived you till the decree of Allah[2994] came to pass. And the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.

Commentary:
أمر اللّٰه (decree of Allah) means the decree of Allah that Divine punishment will overtake the hypocrites. The reference may be to the punishment of the Jewish tribes of Medina for their repeated defection and treachery.

وہ مومنوں سے پکار پکار کر کہیں گے کیا ہم تمہارے ساتھ نہ تھے؟ مومن جواب دیں گے ہاں، مگر تم نے اپنے آپ کو خود فتنے میں ڈالا، موقع پرستی کی، شک میں پڑے رہے، اور جھوٹی توقعات تمہیں فریب دیتی رہیں، یہاں تک کہ اللہ کا فیصلہ آ گیا، اور آخر وقت تک وہ بڑا دھوکے باز تمہیں اللہ کے معاملہ میں دھوکا دیتا رہا

The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.

أمر اللّٰه (decree of Allah) means the decree of Allah that Divine punishment will overtake the hypocrites. The reference may be to the punishment of the Jewish tribes of Medina for their repeated defection and treachery.

اور تمہاری عورتوں میں سے جو حیض سے مایوس ہوچکی ہوں اگر تمہیں شک ہو تو ان کی عدت تین مہینے ہے اور اُن کی بھی جو حائضہ نہیں ہوئیں۔ اور جہاں تک حمل والیوں کا تعلق ہے اُن کی عدت وضعِ حمل ہے۔ اور جو اللہ کا تقویٰ اختیار کرے اللہ اپنے حکم سے اس کے لئے آسانی پیدا کردے گا۔
French
Et si vous êtes dans le doute au sujet de celles de vos femmes qui n’espèrent plus de règles, alors sachez que la période prescrite pour elles est de trois mois, et la même chose pour celles qui n’ont pas encore eu leurs règles. Et quant à celles qui sont enceintes, leur période sera jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient délivrées de leur fardeau. Et quiconque craint Allāh, Il lui facilitera ses affaires.

Mas en cuanto a las que estén embarazadas, su período durará hasta que queden libres de su carga. Y a quien teme a Al-lah, Él le facilitará sus asuntos.
اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اور (تمہاری بیویوں میں سے) وہ (عورتیں) جو حیض سے مایوس ہو چکی ہوں اگر (ان کی عدت کے متعلق) تمہیں شبہ ہو تو ان کی عدت تین مہینے ہے اور اسی طرح ان کی بھی جن کو حیض[1] نہیں آرہا۔ اور جن عورتوں کو حمل ہو ان کی عدت وضع حمل تک ہے اور جو کوئی اللہ کا تقویٰ اختیار کرے اللہ ضرور اس کے معاملہ میں آسانی پیدا کر دیتا ہے۔
یعنی اس وقت حیض رُک چکا ہے یا آیا ہی نہیں‘ جیسا کہ بعض عورتوں کو بیماری ہوتی ہے۔

And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.
