Surely, thy Lord knows that thou standest up praying for nearly twothirds of the night, and sometimes half or a third thereof, and also a party of those who are with thee. And Allah determines the measure of the night and the day. He knows that you cannot keep its measure, so He has turned to you in mercy. Recite, then, as much of the Qur’an as is easy for you. He knows that there will be some among you who may be sick and others who may travel in the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and others who may fight in the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy for you, and observe Prayer, and pay the Zakat, and lend to Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you send on before you for your souls, you will find it with Allah. It will be better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Surely, Allah is Most For-giving, Merciful.

یقیناً تیرا ربّ جانتا ہے کہ تُو دو تہائی رات کے قریب یا اس کا نصف یا اس کا تیسرا حصہ کھڑا رہتا ہے نیز اُن لوگوں کا ایک گروہ بھی جو تیرے ساتھ ہیں۔ اور اللہ رات اور دن کو گھٹاتا بڑھاتا رہتا ہے۔ اور وہ جانتا ہے کہ تم ہرگز اس (طریق) کو نبھا نہیں سکوگے۔ پس وہ تم پر عفو کے ساتھ جُھک گیا ہے۔ پس قرآن میں سے جتنا میسّر ہو پڑھ لیا کرو۔ وہ جانتا ہے کہ تم میں سے مریض بھی ہوں گے اور دوسرے بھی جو زمین میں اللہ کا فضل چاہتے ہوئے سفر کرتے ہیں اور کچھ اَور بھی جو خدا کی راہ میں قتال کریں گے۔ پس اس میں سے جو بھی میسر آئے پڑھ لیا کرو اور نماز کو قائم کرو اور زکوٰۃ ادا کرو اور اللہ کو قرضہء حسنہ دو اور اچھی چیزوں میں سے جو بھی تم خود اپنی خاطر آگے بھیجوگے تو وہی ہے جسے تم اللہ کے حضور بہتر اور اجر کے لحاظ سے عظیم تر پاؤ گے۔ پس اللہ سے بخشش طلب کرو۔ یقیناً اللہ بہت بخشنے والا (اور) بار بار رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

French

Assurément, ton Seigneur sait que tu restes debout enprière pendant presque les deux tiers de la nuit, et parfois pendant la moitié ou le tiers, ainsi qu’une partie de ceux qui sont avec toi. Et Allāh décide de la durée de la nuit et du jour. Il sait que vous ne pouvez observer cela assidûment de cette façon ; c’est pourquoi Il S’est tourné vers vous avec clémence. Récitez donc ce qui vous est possible du Coran. Il sait qu’il y aura certains parmi vous qui pourraient être malades, et d’autres qui pourraient être en voyage dans le pays à la recherche de la munificence d’Allāh, et d’autres qui pourraient être appelés à combattre pour la cause d’Allāh. Aussi, récitez-en ce qui est possible pour vous et observez la Prière et payez la Zakāt, et prêtez à Allāh un bon prêt. Et quelque bien que vous envoyiez devant vous pour votre âme, vous le retrouverez auprès d’Allāh. Il sera meilleur et plus grand en récompense. Et implorez le pardon d’Allāh. En vérité, Allāh est Très-Pardonnant, Miséricordieux.

German

Dein Herr weiß fürwahr, dass du im Gebete stehest fast zwei Drittel der Nacht, und (manchmal) eine Hälfte oder ein Drittel davon, und ein Teil derer, die mit dir sind (tun auch so). Und Allah bestimmt das Maß der Nacht und des Tages. Er weiß, dass ihr es nicht werdet bestimmen können, darum hat Er Sich euch in Gnade zugewandt. Traget denn so viel vom Qur-ân vor, wie (euch) leicht fällt. Er weiß, dass einige unter euch sein werden, die krank sind, und andere, die im Lande umherreisen, nach Allahs Gnadenfülle strebend, und wieder andere, die für Allahs Sache kämpfen. So traget von ihm das vor, was (euch) leicht fällt, und verrichtet das Gebet und zahlet die Zakât und leihet Allah ein stattliches Darlehen. Und was ihr an Gutem für eure Seelen vorausschicket, ihr werdet es bei Allah finden; es wird besser und größer sein an Lohn. Und bittet Allah um Verzeihung. Wahrlich, Allah ist allverzeihend, barmherzig.

的确, 你的养主知道, [a]你礼拜到近于一夜的三分之二, 或二分之一, 或三分之一时间。[b]随从你的一部分人也是(这样做的)。[1517]安拉常常决定日夜的长短。[1518]他知道你们不能估计 (礼拜的) 时间, 所以他宽恕了你们。你们要诵读对你们容易的 «古兰经» 经文。他知道你们中将有一些病人, 有些为了寻求安拉的恩典而旅行的人, 也有些在安拉道上作战的人, 所以你们要诵读对你们容易的 «古兰经» 经文。你们要恪守拜功, 完纳天课并[c]借给安拉好的款项。凡是你们为自己的好处而做的善功, 你们将见到它在安拉那里。那将是最好、最大的报酬。你们要祈求安拉的宽恕。安拉确是最宽恕的, 永久仁慈的。

Italian

Per certo, il tuo Signore sa che stai alzato in preghiera per quasi due terzi della notte, e a volte metà o per un terzo di essa, e così una parte di quelli che sono con te. Allah stabilisce la misura della notte e del giorno. Egli sa che non siete in grado di tenerne la misura, e Si volge a voi con misericordia. Recitate, dunque, del Corano, quanto vi riesce agevole. Egli sa che fra voi vi potranno essere dei malati, e altri in viaggio per il paese, alla ricerca dei doni della bontà di Allah, e altri a combattere per la causa di Allah. Così, recitate di esso ciò che vi riesce agevole, e osservate la preghiera, e pagate lo Zakat, e fate ad Allah un buon prestito. E qualunque cosa buona mandiate innanzi a voi, per le vostre anime, la ritroverete presso Allah. Si tratterà di un bene maggiore e più grande, come ricompensa. E cercate il perdono di Allah. Per certo, Allah è Colui che sommamente perdona, il Misericordioso.

Spanish

En verdad, tu Señor sabe que te levantas para orar durante casi dos tercios de la noche, y a veces la mitad o un tercio de ella, así como un grupo de quienes están contigo. Y Al-lah determina la edida de la noche y del día. Sabe que vosotros no podréis precisar su medida, por lo que se ha vuelto a vosotros con misericordia. Recitad, pues, lo que os sea fácil del Corán. Él sabe que habrá algunos de vosotros que estén enfermos y otros de viaje por el país, buscando los dones de Al-lah, y otros combatiendo por la causa de Al-lah. Recitad, pues, lo que os sea fácil de él, cumplid la Oración, pagad el Zakat y entregad a Al-lah un préstamo generoso. Pues todo el bien que anticipéis a favor de vuestras almas, lo encontraréis con Al-lah. Su recompensa será mejor y mayor. Y pedid perdón a Al-lah. En verdad, Al-lah es el Sumo Indulgente, Misericordioso.

تیرا رب جانتا ہے کہ تو دو تہائی رات سے کچھ کم نماز کے لئے کھڑا رہتا ہے اور کبھی کبھی نصف کے برابر اور کبھی ایک تہائی کے برابر۔ اور اسی طرح کچھ تیرے ساتھی بھی۔ اور اللہ رات اور دن کو چھوٹا بڑا کرتا رہتا ہے۔ خدا جانتا ہے کہ تم پوری طرح نماز کے وقت کا اندازہ نہیں لگا سکتے۔ پس اس نے تم پر رحم کیا ہے پس چاہیے کہ قرآن میں سے جتنا میسر ہو تم رات کے وقت پڑھ لیا کرو۔ اللہ جانتا ہے کہ تم میں سے کچھ بیمار بھی ہوں گے۔ اور کچھ تجارت کی غرض سے سفر پر بھی نکلیں گے اور کچھ لوگ اللہ کے راستہ میں جہاد کرنے بھی نکلیں گے۔ پس (ہم بغیر حد بندی کے کہتے ہیں کہ) قرآن میں سے جتنا میسر آئے پڑھ لیا کرو اور نمازیں شرائط کے مطابق ادا کرو اور زکٰوۃ دیا کرو اور اللہ کو خوش کرنے کے لئے اپنے مال کا ایک اچھا ٹکڑا کاٹ کر الگ کر دیا کرو اور جو بھلائی بھی تم اپنی جانوں کے لئے آگے بھیجو گے۔ تم اس کو اللہ کے پاس اس حالت میں پالو گے کہ وہ بہتر اور اجر میں بڑھ کر ہوگی۔ اور اللہ سے استغفار کرو۔ اللہ بہت معاف کرنے والا (اور) بے حد رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

He knows that you cannot calculate the time accurately, so He has turned to you in mercy. Recite, then, as much of the Qur’an as is easy for you. He knows that there will be some among you who may be sick, and others who may travel in the land, seeking Allah’s bounty, and others who may fight in the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy for you, and observe Prayer and pay the Zakat [a]and lend to Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you may send on before you for your souls, you will find it with Allah. It will be better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

اے نبیؐ، تمہارا رب جانتا ہے کہ تم کبھی دو تہائی رات کے قریب اور کبھی آدھی رات اور کبھی ایک تہائی رات عبادت میں کھڑے رہتے ہو، اور تمہارے ساتھیوں میں سے بھی ایک گروہ یہ عمل کرتا ہے اللہ ہی رات اور دن کے اوقات کا حساب رکھتا ہے، اُسے معلوم ہے کہ تم لوگ اوقات کا ٹھیک شمار نہیں کر سکتے، لہٰذا اس نے تم پر مہربانی فرمائی، اب جتنا قرآن آسانی سے پڑھ سکتے ہو پڑھ لیا کرو اُسے معلوم ہے کہ تم میں کچھ مریض ہونگے، کچھ دوسرے لوگ اللہ کے فضل کی تلاش میں سفر کرتے ہیں، اور کچھ اور لوگ اللہ کی راہ میں جنگ کرتے ہیں پس جتنا قرآن بآسانی پڑھا جا سکے پڑھ لیا کرو، نماز قائم کرو، زکوٰۃ دو اور اللہ کو اچھا قرض دیتے رہو جو کچھ بھلائی تم اپنے لیے آگے بھیجو گے اسے اللہ کے ہاں موجود پاؤ گے، وہی زیادہ بہتر ہے اور اس کا اجر بہت بڑا ہے اللہ سے مغفرت مانگتے رہو، بے شک اللہ بڑا غفور و رحیم ہے

English - Sahih

Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

بے شک آپ کا رب جانتا ہے کہ آپ اور جو لوگ آپ کے ساتھ ہیں (کبھی) دو تہائی رات کے قریب اور (کبھی) آدھی رات اور (کبھی) تہائی رات سے (نماز تہجد) میں کھڑے ہوتے ہیں اور الله ہی رات اور دن کا اندازہ کرتا ہے اسے معلوم ہے کہ تم اس کو نباہ نہیں سکتے سو اس نے تم پر رحم کیا پس پڑھو جتنا قرآن میں سے آسان ہو اسے علم ہے کہ تم میں سے کچھ بیمار ہوں گے اور کچھ اور لوگ بھی جو الله کا فضل تلاش کرتے ہوئے زمین پر سفر کریں گے اورکچھ اور لوگ ہوں گے جو الله کی راہ میں جہاد کریں گے پس پڑھو جو اس میں سےآسان ہو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکوةٰ دو اور الله کو اچھی طرح (یعنی اخلاص سے) قرض دو اورجو کچھ نیکی آگے بھیجوگے اپنے واسطے تو اس کو الله کے ہاں بہتر اور بڑے اجر کی چیز پاؤ گے اور الله سے بخشش مانگو بے شک الله بخشنے والا نہایت رحم والا ہے

And Allah determines the night and the day. He knows that not you count it, so He has turned to you, so recite what is easy of the Quran. 在这章经文的开头, 穆圣奉命常常礼夜拜, 因为这样做会给他履行庄严的职责提供必需的力量, 布述马上要交给他的真主的使命。在这节经文里, 他确信真主喜悦, 并且他被告知, 他已忠诚地执行了礼夜拜的命令--------不仅他这样, 那一伙信者也是如此。命令不是特定地赋予穆圣的信者, 而且那些常常企望步其足迹的人, 在这方面也以他为榜样。

English - Arberry

Thy Lord knows that thou keepest vigil nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, and a party of those with thee; and God determines the night and the day. He knows that you will not number it, and He has turned towards you. Therefore recite of the Koran so much as is feasible. He knows that some of you are sick, and others journeying in the land, seeking the bounty of God, and others fighting in the way of God. So recite of it so much as is feasible. And perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and lend to God a good loan. Whatever good you shall forward to your souls' account, you shall find it with God as better, and mightier a wage. And ask God's forgiveness; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.

(O Prophet), your Lord knows that you sometimes stand up in Prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, and sometimes half or one-third of it, and so does a party of those with you; Allah measures the night and the day. He knows some among you will be sick, and some will be travelling over the earth in search of the bounty of God, and some fighting in the way of God. So read as much from it as you can easily, and be firm in devotion, pay the zakat, and lend a goodly loan to God. And what you send for yourself of the good, you will find it with God better and greater in reward. So ask for God's forgiveness. Indeed God is forgiving and kind.

Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. Commentary:

In the opening verse of the Surah the Holy Prophet was enjoined that he should constantly pray in the night, for this would give him the necessary strength to discharge the grave responsibility of preaching the Divine Message that was shortly going to devolve on him. In the verse under comment he is assured of Divine pleasure, and is told that he has faithfully carried out God’s command about the night prayer, not only he, but a party of believers also. The command was not specifically directed to the followers of the Holy Prophet, but being always desirous of following in his footsteps, they copied his example in this respect also.

The sentence "Allah determines the measure of the night and the day," signifies that sometimes the nights are long and sometimes they are short and sometimes the day and the night are equal.

The words ان لن تحصوه may apply to Muslims in general. In this sense they are told that all of them would not be able to say the Night Prayer regularly and punctually. Or the words may signify that as Muslims are longing to win God’s pleasure and attain nearness to Him, so they should read the Quran thoughtfully. In this way they would acquire knowledge of, and insight into, Divine attributes.

Besides the meaning given in the text, the expression فاقرؤا ما تیسر منه may mean: (1) recite of the Quran as much as you possibly can.
