O ye who believe! take not others than your own people as intimate friends; they will not fail to corrupt you. They love to see you in trouble. Hatred has already shown itself through the utterances of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater still. We have made clear to you Our commandments, if you will understand.

اے وہ لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو! اپنے لوگوں کو چھوڑ کر دوسروں کو جگری دوست نہ بناؤ۔ وہ تم سے برائی کرنے میں کوئی کمی نہیں کرتے۔ وہ پسند کرتے ہیں کہ تم مشکل میں پڑو۔ یقیناً بُغض ان کے مُونہوں سے ظاہر ہو چکا ہے اور جو کچھ ان کے دل چھپاتے ہیں وہ اس سے بھی زیادہ ہے۔ یقیناً ہم تمہارے لئے آیات کو کھول کھول کر بیان کرچکے ہیں اگر تم عقل رکھتے ہو۔

Ô croyants ! Ne choisissez pas comme amis intimes en dehors de vos propres gens ; ils ne manqueront pas de vous corrompre. Ils aiment à vous voir en difficulté. La haine s’est déjà manifestée à travers ce qui sort de leurs bouches ; et ce que leur cœur cache est plus grave encore. Nous vous avons rendu clairs Nos commandements, si vous voulez bien comprendre.

¡Oh, vosotros, los que creéis! no toméis como amigos íntimos a otros que no sean de los vuestros; porque ellos no dejarán de corromperos. Les agrada veros en problemas. El odio se ha manifestado ya por lo que profieren sus bocas, y es aún peor lo que ocultan en sus corazones. Os hemos aclarado Nuestro mandamiento, si es que comprendéis.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اے ایماندارو! اپنے لوگوں کو چھوڑ کر (دوسروں کو) راز دار دوست نہ بناؤ وہ تم سے بدسلوکی کرنے میں کوئی کمی نہیں کرتے (اور) تمہارے دکھ میں پڑجانے کو پسند کرتے ہیں۔ (ان کی) دشمنی ان کے مونہوں سے ظاہر ہو چکی ہے اور جو کچھ ان کے سینوں میں مخفی ہے وہ (اس سے بھی) بڑھ کر ہے۔ اگر تم عقل سے کام لینے والے ہو تو ہم نے تمہارے لئے اپنی آیات کو کھول کر بیان کر دیا ہے۔

O ye who believe! [b]take not others than your own people as intimate friends; [c]they will spare no pains to ruin[462] you. They love to see you in trouble.[463] Hatred has already shown itself through the utterances of their mouths and what their breasts hide is greater still. We have made clear to you Our commandments, if you will only use your understanding.

Important Words:

بطانة (intimate friends) is derived from بطن i.e. it was or became hidden. بطانة means a lining; an inner vest; a close and intimate friend or friends; a friend or friends to whom one reveals one’s secrets (Aqrab).

خبالا (corruption) is derived from خبل. They say خبله i.e. he made him or it corrupt or evil. خبله الحزن means, the grief affected and vitiated his reason. خبل الرجل عن کذا means, he confined the man and prevented him from it. خبالا means, corruption or bad condition whether of body or reason or actions; loss or deterioration; ruin or destruction; fatal poison (Aqrab).

عنتم (in trouble) is derived from عنت. They say عنت الشیء i.e. the thing became bad or corrupt. عنت فلان means, misfortune befell him and he got into trouble. عنت زید means Zaid met with a calamity and was ruined. عنت العظم means, the bone became weak and broke after it was in a good condition. عنت الرجل means, the man committed a sin (Aqrab). See also 2:221.

Commentary:

The words لایالونکم خبالا rendered as, they will not fail to corrupt you, may also mean: (1) they have no scruple in ruining you; (2) they leave no stone unturned to spoil your work; (3) they will do what they can to corrupt your religion; (4) they are always busy injuring you.

The words ودوا ما عنتم (they love to see you in trouble) may, in the light of the meanings given under Important Words above, mean: (1) they love to see you fall into calamity and misfortune; (2) they love to see you perish; (3) they love to see you become weak and broken; (4) they love to see you become sinful.

Obviously, this verse refers to avoiding such non-Muslims only as are at war with Muslims or such as seek to injure Islam in any other way. It does not require Muslims to have absolutely no relations with any non-Muslim. Elsewhere, the Quran says:

Allah forbids you not respecting those who have not fought against you on account of your religion and who have not driven you out from your homes, that you be kind to them and deal equitably with them. Surely Allah loves those who are equitable (60:9).

اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو، اپنی جماعت کے لوگوں کے سوا دوسروں کو اپنا راز دار نہ بناؤ وہ تمہاری خرابی کے کسی موقع سے فائدہ اٹھانے میں نہیں چوکتے تمہیں جس چیز سے نقصان پہنچے وہی ان کو محبوب ہے ان کے دل کا بغض ان کے منہ سے نکلا پڑتا ہے اور جو کچھ وہ اپنے سینوں میں چھپائے ہوئے ہیں وہ اس سے شدید تر ہے ہم نے تمہیں صاف صاف ہدایات دے دی ہیں، اگر تم عقل رکھتے ہو (تو ان سے تعلق رکھنے میں احتیاط برتو گے)

O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.

اے ایمان والو اپنوں کے سوا کسی کو بھیدی نہ بناؤ وہ تمہاری خرابی میں قصور نہیں کرتے جو چیز تمہیں تکلیف دے وہ انہیں پسند آتی ہے ان کے مونہوں سے دشمنی نکل پڑتی ہے اور جو ان کے سینے میں چپھی ہوئي ہے وہ بہت زیادہ ہے ہم نے تمہارے لیے نشانیاں بیان کر دی ہیں اگر تم عقل رکھتے ہو

O believers, take not for your intimates outside yourselves such men spare nothing to ruin you; they yearn for you to suffer Hatred has already shown itself of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is yet greater. Now We have made clear to you the signs, if you understand.

Believers! Do not take for intimate friends those who are not of your kind. They spare no effort to injure you. Indeed they love all that distresses you. Their hatred is clearly manifest in what they say, and what their breasts conceal is even greater. Now We have made Our messages clear to you, if only you can understand (the danger of their intimacy).
