Commentary:
The expression, Read thy book, used figuratively means, "take thy punishment". The words, Sufficient is thy own soul this day as reckoner against thee, clearly show that punishment is not something that comes from outside but it takes its birth within man himself. In fact, the punishments and rewards of Heaven and Hell will only be so many embodiments and representations of the deeds, good or bad, of man. Thus in this life man is the architect of his own destiny and in the next he will be his own rewarder or punisher.

اِقْرَاء (Iqra’) 这个字的意思是阅读; 诵吟; 传布; 公开赞美或收集, 所以这节经文的含意是: «古兰经» 旨在加以诵读、宣告、收集和汇集, 然后向全世界传播。提到安拉的常德 رَبّ (Rabb), 是说明人的道德是逐步发展的, 一直到穆圣才臻于尽善尽美的境界。Rabb 意思是哺育者, 支持者, 发展者, 支持人类经历各阶段发展者。这节经文的含义是: 爱戴安拉, 在人的天性中是根深蒂固的; 很自然, 应该有一个这种本能欲望可以在自身得到完全显示的人。
مفسرین اور مسیحیوں نے اس جگہ ایک غلطی کی ہے اور لکھا ہے کہ فرشتہ نے غارِ حرا میں ریشم پر لکھی ہوئی ایک تحریر دکھا کر کہا تھا کہ ’’پڑھو‘‘ مگر اصل بات یہ ہے کہ اِقْرَأْ کے معنے عربی زبان میں صرف پڑھنے کے نہیں بلکہ دوسرے کی بات دہرانے کے بھی ہیں۔ پس اس سورت میں بتایا گیا ہے کہ جب فرشتہ پہلی دفعہ خدا کی وحی لایا تو اس نے آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کہا کہ جو کچھ میں کہتا جاؤں اسے دہراتے جاؤ۔ اس معنے سے غفلت کی وجہ سے ایک بیہودہ قصّہ بن گیا۔

Moreover, the verse embodies a prophecy that the Quran will be written and repeatedly read and recited. It is an undeniable fact of history that as soon as a portion of the Quran was revealed it was committed to writing and that among all religious Scriptures the Quran is the most widely read. The mention in the verse of the Divine attribute رب (the Lord) Who cherishes and sustains man through all the different stages of his development signifies that the spiritual development of man was to be gradual and in stages till it was to find its full consummation in the Holy Prophet.
