50:37

وَکَمۡ اَہۡلَکۡنَا قَبۡلَہُمۡ مِّنۡ قَرۡنٍ ہُمۡ اَشَدُّ مِنۡہُمۡ بَطۡشًا فَنَقَّبُوۡا فِی الۡبِلٰدِ ہَلۡ مِنۡ مَّحِیۡصٍ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And how many a generation who were greater than they in power have We destroyed before them! But when the punishment came, they went about the lands. Was there any place of refuge for them?

اور کتنی ہی قومیں ہم نے اُن سے پہلے ہلاک کردیں جو گرفت میں ان سے زیادہ سخت تھیں۔ پس انہوں نے زمین میں غاریں بنا لیں (مگر) کیا کوئی پناہ کی جگہ تھی؟

French

Et combien de générations qui étaient plus redoutables qu’eux avons-Nous anéanties avant eux ! Ils ont creusé des caves dans la terre. Y avaient-il un quelconque refuge pour eux ?

German

Doch wie so manche Völker haben Wir schon vor ihnen vertilgt, die stärker waren als sie an Macht! (Als die Strafe kam) suchten sie rings in den Landen. War da ein Zufluchtsort?

[c]在他们之前, 我毁灭了一代又一代比他们更勇猛的人, (但是当惩罚来临时,) 他们到各地避难,[1291] 可是 (他们) 有任何躲避的地方?

经文中这一句字面上的意思是: “潜伏地洞中救自己”, 似乎也指今天防止轰炸袭击的地下战壕。

E quante generazioni, più potenti di loro, Noi non abbiamo distrutto prima di essi! Ma una volta raggiunte dal castigo, si misero a percorrere i paesi. Ma c'era forse un qualche luogo di rifugio per loro?

¡A cuántas generaciones más poderosas hemos destruido antes de ellos! Pero cuando llegó el castigo, se esparcieron por la tierra. ¿Hubo acaso algún lugar de refugio para ellos?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور ہم ان سے پہلے بہت سی قومیں ہلاک کر چکے ہیں وہ ان سے زیادہ گرفت کا مادہ رکھتی تھیں لیکن (جب عذاب آیا تو) انہوں نے ملک کے ہر گوشے میں اپنے بچاؤ کے لئے سرنگیں بچھا [1]دیں مگر (ظاہر ہے کہ) خدا کے عذاب سے بچنے کی گنجائش کہاں ہو سکتی ہے۔

یعنی ملک میں ایسے سامان پیدا کرنے شروع کیے کہ وہ اس عذاب سے بچ جائیں لیکن خدائی سزا سے بچنے کے لئے انسانی تدبیریں کہاں کام دے سکتی ہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

[c]And how many a generation, who were mightier than they in prowess, have We destroyed before them! But when the punishment came, they went about in the lands, devising plans to escape it.[2815A] But was there any place of refuge for them?

19:75; 47:14.

The words in the text literally mean: 'Burrowed into the earth to save themselves,' and seem to refer to the present day underground trenches as protection against bombing attacks.

[c]And how many a generation, who were greater than they in power, have We destroyed before them. They went about the lands devising means to escape the punishment. Was there any place of refuge for them?[3883]

Important Words:

نقبوا (went about) is the intensive form of نقب (naqaba) which means, he made a hole through a wall; he perforated, pierced or made a hole through anything. نقب فی الارض means, he went or went away through the land or country or journeyed or traversed through the land.

Commentary:

Divine punishment, when it comes, is overwhelming and all-encompassing. There is no escape or refuge from it, however one may try.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

ہم ان سے پہلے بہت سی قوموں کو ہلاک کر چکے ہیں جو ان سے بہت زیادہ طاقتور تھیں اور دنیا کے ملکوں کو انہوں نے چھان مارا تھا پھر کیا وہ کوئی جائے پناہ پا سکے؟

English - Sahih

And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape?

اور ہم نے ان سے پہلے کتنی قومیں ہلاک کر دیں جو قوت میں ان سے بڑھ کر تھیں پھر (عذاب کے وقت) شہرو ں میں دوڑتے پھرنے لگے کہ کوئی پناہ کی جگہ بھی ہے
