English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He will punish them for their deception. And when they stand up for Prayer, they stand lazily and to be seen of men, and they remember Allah but little,

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

یقیناً منافقین اللہ سے دھوکہ بازی کرتے ہیں جبکہ وہ انہی کو دھوکہ میں مبتلا کر دیتا ہے۔اور جب وہ نماز کے لئے کھڑے ہوتے ہیں سستی کے ساتھ کھڑے ہوتے ہیں۔ لوگوں کے سامنے دکھاوا کرتے ہیں اور اللہ کا ذکر نہیں کرتے مگر بہت تھوڑا۔

French

En vérité, les hypocrites cherchent à tromper Allāh, mais Il les laissera se leurrer eux-mêmes. Et quand ils se mettent debout pour prier, ils se tiennent avec paresse et pour être vus des hommes et à peine se souviennent-ils d’Allāh ;

German

Die Heuchler suchen Allah zu täuschen, doch Er wird sie strafen für ihren Betrug. Und wenn sie sich zum Gebet hinstellen, dann stehen sie nachlässig da, zeigen sich den Leuten, und sie gedenken Allahs nur wenig;

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

منافق یقیناً اللہ کو دھوکا دینا چاہتے ہیں اور وہ انہیں ان کے دھوکے کی سزا دے گا۔ اور جب وہ نماز (کی طرف جانے) کے لئے کھڑے ہوتے ہیں تو سستی سے کھڑے ہوتے ہیں۔ وہ لوگوں کو دکھاتے ہیں اور اللہ کو کم ہی یاد کرتے ہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

[a]The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He will punish them for their deception.[687] And when they stand up for Prayer, [b]they stand up lazily and to be seen of men, and they remember Allah but little.

It is not God but the Holy Prophet whom, in reality, the hypocrites seek to deceive because the Prophet is an agent of God and all plots hatched against him are really so many plots hatched to frustrate the purpose of God. Therefore God Himself will punish them for their deceitful conduct. See also 2:16.

Important Words:

For the meaning of the word یخادعون and خادعھم see 2:10. The latter expression, though similar in root and construction, means "will punish them for their deception" and not "will deceive them". See also 2:16.

Commentary:

It is not the Holy Prophet but God Himself Whom in reality the hypocrites seek to deceive because the Prophet is only an agent of God and all plots hatched against him are really so many plots hatched to frustrate the purpose of God. Therefore, He Himself will punish them for their deceitful conduct.

Laziness and slowness are the characteristics of a hypocrite. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said, "The most burdensome of Prayers for the hypocrites are the late-evening and morning Prayers"; and "A hypocrite waits until the sun is about to set; then he gets up and hurriedly performs four Rak‘at of late-afternoon Prayer, and remembers God but little" (Muslim). It is only true faith and certainty that can engender in man the spirit of eagerness to live up to one’s conviction.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

یہ منافق اللہ کے ساتھ دھوکہ بازی کر رہے ہیں حالانکہ در حقیقت اللہ ہی نے انہیں دھوکہ میں ڈال رکھا ہے جب یہ نماز کے لیے اٹھتے ہں تو کسمساتے ہوئے محض لوگوں کو دکھانے کی خاطر اٹھتے ہیں اور خدا کو کم ہی یاد کرتے ہیں

Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,

منافق الله کو فریب دیتے ہیں اور وہی ان کو فریب دے گا اور جب وہ نماز میں کھڑے ہوتے ہیں تو سست بن کر کھڑے ہوتے ہیں لوگو ں کو دکھا تے ہیں اور الله کو بہت کم یاد کرتے ہیں

Indeed, the hypocrites (seek to) deceive Allah and (it is) He who deceives them. And when they stand for the prayer, they stand lazily, showing off (to) the people and not they remember Allah except a little.

The hypocrites seek to trick God, but God is tricking them. When they stand up to pray they stand up lazily, showing off to the people and not remembering God save a little;

Behold, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is they who are being deluded by Him. When they rise to Prayer, they rise reluctantly, and only to be seen by men. They remember Allah but little.

Lo! the hypocrites seek to beguile Allah, but it is He Who beguileth them. When they stand up to worship they perform it languidly and to be seen of men, and are mindful of Allah but little;

And nothing has deprived them of the acceptance of their contributions save that they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger. And they come not to Prayer except lazily and they make no contribution save reluctantly.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور انہیں کسی چیز نے اس بات سے محروم نہیں کیا کہ ان سے ان کے اموال قبول کئے جائیں سوائے اس کے کہ وہ اللہ اور اس کے رسول کا انکار کر بیٹھے تھے نیز یہ کہ وہ نماز کے قریب نہیں آتے تھے مگر سخت سستی کی حالت میں۔ اور خرچ بھی نہیں کرتے تھے مگر ایسی حالت میں کہ وہ سخت کراہت محسوس کرتے تھے۔

Et rien n’empêche leurs contributions d’être acceptées, sauf qu’ils ne croient pas en Allāh et en Son Messager. Et ils ne se rendent à la Prière que dans la paresse et ils ne donnent qu’à contre-cœur pour la cause d’Allāh.

Y nada les ha privado de la aceptación de sus contribuciones excepto el no creer en Al-lah y en Su Mensajero. Pues sólo acuden a la Oración perezosamente y no hacen sus contribuciones sino a disgusto.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور اللہ اور اس کے رسول کے انکار کرنے کے سوا اور اس بات کے سوا کہ وہ نماز بہت سستی سے پڑھتے تھے اور خدا کی راہ میں ناخوشی سے خرچ کرتے تھے ان کے صدقات کے قبول کرنے کو کس نے روکا ہے۔

Commentary:

Good works are of two kinds: (1) those done for the purification of one’s own soul, of which Prayer is the most important, and (2) those done for the uplift of one’s community, of which Zakah or other similar subscriptions form an important part. Hypocrites, the verse points out, are lazy and reluctant in both these fields.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

ان کے دیے ہوئے مال قبول نہ ہونے کی کوئی وجہ اس کے سوا نہیں ہے کہ انہوں نے اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے کفر کیا ہے، نماز کے لیے آتے ہیں تو کسمساتے ہوئے آتے ہیں اور راہ خدا میں خرچ کرتے ہیں تو بادل ناخواستہ خرچ کرتے ہیں

And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.
