وَلَا تَنكِحُوا۟ مَا نَكَحَ ءَابَآؤُكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةً وَمَقْتًا وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا
The words do not mean that stepmothers taken as wives or two sisters taken in marriage together before this verse was revealed could be retained. What they mean is simply this that if such men repent and make amends, no harm will come to them for what unlawful acts they might have committed in the past. The past will be forgiven but the women whom it is unlawful to marry are to be divorced at once.

The clause, except what has already passed, does not mean that stepmothers taken as wives before this verse was revealed could be retained. Islam accorded to women inviolable rights which could not be infringed with impunity.

Commentary:
After the advent of the Holy Prophet has been mentioned in v. 38 above, in the present verse the people to whom he preached his Message are warned that God has selected them to be the recipients and bearers of His revelation. He has been very gracious and kind to them for having selected them for the bestowal of His grace, but if they refused to accept His Messenger, great indeed will also be their punishment.

人的本性是, 当他遇到他恶事所引出的不幸后果时, 开始咒骂自己。不信的人被告知说, 他们要面临惩罚时, 他们觉得厌恶他们自己。可是永久仁慈和无限博爱的安拉在他们拒绝他的教义以及反对和迫害他的使者时, 更加憎恨他们。

ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۖ كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍ
بظاہر یہ الفاظ ہونے چاہئیں۔ کہ ہر متکبر کے دل پر مہر لگا دیتا ہے مگر قرآن مجید کہتا ہے کہ متکبر کے سارے دل پر مہر لگا دیتا ہے۔ قرآن مجید کا یہ استعمال بے نظیر ہے۔ کیونکہ ہر متکبر کے دل پر مہر لگنے سے وہ بات نہیں نکلتی جو ایک کامل متکبر کے سارے دل پر مہر لگانے سے نکلتی ہے کیونکہ اس دوسری بات سے یہ نتیجہ نکالا گیا ہے کہ ہدایت کی راہیں مختلف ہوتی ہیں۔ ایک گمراہ شخص بھی ہدایت کی کوئی راہ پا سکتا ہے لیکن جو کامل متکبر ہو اس کے لئے سب ہدایت کی راہیں بند ہو جاتی ہیں اور دل کے ہر حصہ پر مہر لگ جاتی ہے کوئی راہ ہدایت کی اس کے لئے کھلی نہیں رہتی۔

بظاہر یہ الفاظ ہونے چاہئیں۔ کہ ہر متکبر کے دل پر مہر لگا دیتا ہے مگر قرآن مجید کہتا ہے کہ متکبر کے سارے دل پر مہر لگا دیتا ہے۔ قرآن مجید کا یہ استعمال بے نظیر ہے۔ کیونکہ ہر متکبر کے دل پر مہر لگنے سے وہ بات نہیں نکلتی جو ایک کامل متکبر کے سارے دل پر مہر لگانے سے نکلتی ہے کیونکہ اس دوسری بات سے یہ نتیجہ نکالا گیا ہے کہ ہدایت کی راہیں مختلف ہوتی ہیں۔ ایک گمراہ شخص بھی ہدایت کی کوئی راہ پا سکتا ہے لیکن جو کامل متکبر ہو اس کے لئے سب ہدایت کی راہیں بند ہو جاتی ہیں اور دل کے ہر حصہ پر مہر لگ جاتی ہے کوئی راہ ہدایت کی اس کے لئے کھلی نہیں رہتی۔
