لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

If it had been an immediate gain and a short journey, they would certainly have followed thee, but the hard journey seemed too long to them. Yet they will swear by Allah, saying, ‘If we had been able, we would surely have gone forth with you.’ They ruin their souls; and Allah knows that they are liars.

اگر فاصلہ نزدیک کا ہوتا اور سفر آسان ہوتا تو وہ ضرور تیرے پیچھے چلتے لیکن مشقّت اٹھانا ان سے بہت دور ہے۔ وہ ضرور اللہ کی قسمیں کھائیں گے کہ اگر ہمیں توفیق ہوتی تو ہم ضرور تمہارے ساتھ نکلتے۔ وہ اپنی ہی جانوں کو ہلاک کر رہے ہیں۔ اور اللہ جانتا ہے کہ یہ یقیناً جھوٹے لوگ ہیں۔

French

S’il était question d’une distance courte et d’un voyage facile, ils t’auraient assurément suivi, mais le pénible voyage leur sembla trop long. Néanmoins, ils jureront par Allāh, en disant : « Si nous l’avions pu, nous serions assurément partis avec vous. » Ils détruisent eux-mêmes ; et Allāh sait que ce sont des menteurs.

German

Hätte es sich um einen nahen Gewinn und um eine kurze Reise gehandelt, sie wären dir gewiss gefolgt, doch die schwere Reise schien ihnen zu lang. Und doch werden sie bei Allah schwören: "Hätten wir es vermocht, wir wären sicherlich mit euch ausgezogen" Sie verderben ihre Seelen; und Allah weiß, dass sie Lügner sind.

如果它 (战役) 是有目前利益或行程近的, 他们一定追随了你, 但是他们觉得这要长途跋涉。然而他们 (在你归来之后) 却对安拉发誓, 说: “如果这是我们力之所及, 我们一定与你一同出征了。” 这些人毁灭自己的生命; 安拉知道他们的确是说谎者。

Italian

Se ci fosse stato un utile immediato e un breve viaggio, essi certamente ti avrebbero seguito, ma il duro viaggio è sembrato loro troppo lungo. Eppure essi giureranno per Allah dicendo: «Se ne fossimo stati capaci, avremmo certo proseguito con voi.» Rovinano le loro anime; e Allah sa che mentono.

Si hubiese habido una ganancia inmediata y un viaje corto, ciertamente te habrían seguido, pero el viaje duro les pareció demasiado largo. Sin embargo, jurarán por Al-lah diciendo: “Si hubiésemos podido, en verdad, hubiéramos avanzado contigo”. Arruinan sus almas, y Al-lah sabe que son mentirosos.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اگر قریب میں ملنے والا فائدہ ہوتا یا چھوٹا سفر ہوتا تو یہ لوگ تیرے پیچھے چل پڑتے لیکن انہیں مسافت دور معلوم ہوئی۔ لیکن (اب وہ تیری واپسی کے بعد) اللہ کی قسمیں کھا کر کہیں گے کہ اگر ہماری طاقت میں ہوتا تو ہم ضرور تمہارے ساتھ نکل کھڑے ہوتے (یہ لوگ) اپنی جانوں کو ہلاک کرتے ہیں اور اللہ جانتا ہے کہ یہ جھوٹے ہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

If it had been an immediate gain and a short journey, they would certainly have followed thee, but the hard journey seemed too long[1188] to them. Yet they will swear by Allah, saying, ‘If we had been able, we would surely have gone forth with you.’ They but ruin their souls; and Allah knows that they are liars.

The journey was very hard and arduous. The Muslim army had to travel in an extremely hot weather about 200 miles to the border of Syria to meet a very powerful army. It was also the harvesting season and the trees were laden with ripe fruit.

Important Words:

عرضا (gain) is derived from the verb عرض for which see 7:170. عرض means, any thing that happens to a man; an accident of any kind; a thing that is not permanent; frail goods of the world; worldly goods of whatever kind; property or wealth whether little or much; booty or spoil; an object of desire; a gain; a gift (Lane & Aqrab).

قاصدا (short) is the active participle from قصد. They say قصدہ i.e. he went to him or directed himself to him; or he made him or it his object; he sought or pursued him or it. قصد الطریقmeans, the way was direct or right. They say قصد الامر i.e. he pursued the right or direct course in the affair and did not exceed the due bounds therein; or he acted in a moderate manner. (qasd) قصد which is the noun-infinitive from قصد (qasada) means, the aim or course of a person; an object of desire; one’s intention or meaning; a right way or course; a right thing. قاصد means, near. طریق قاصد means, a direct or right way or an even road. سفر قاصد means, an easy and short journey; a moderately easy and short journey (Lane & Aqrab).

الشقة (hard journey) is derived from شق. They say شقه i.e. he cut or rent or split or broke it. شق علیه means, it (an affair) affected him severely; it was hard and distressing to him. شقة means, a piece of a garment; a far or long journey; a difficult road; a region or quarter in the reaching of which one is taken by difficulty and distress; distance (Lane).

اے نبیؐ، اگر فائدہ سہل الحصول ہوتا اور سفر ہلکا ہوتا تو وہ ضرور تمہارے پیچھے چلنے پر آمادہ ہو جاتے، مگر ان پر تو یہ راستہ بہت کٹھن ہو گیا اب وہ خدا کی قسم کھا کھا کر کہیں گے کہ اگر ہم چل سکتے تو یقیناً تمہارے ساتھ چلتے وہ اپنے آپ کو ہلاکت میں ڈال رہے ہیں اللہ خوب جانتا ہے کہ وہ جھوٹے ہیں

English - Sahih

Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.

اگر مال نزدیک ہوتا اور سفر ہلکا ہوتا تو وہ ضرور تیرے ساتھ ہوتے لیکن انہیں مسافت لمبی نظر آئی اور اب الله کی قسمیں کھائیں گے کہ اگر ہم سے ہو سکتا تو ہم تمہارے ساتھ ضرور چلتے اپنی جانوں کو ہلاک کرتے ہیں اور الله جانتا ہے کہ وہ جھوٹے ہیں

If it had been a gain near and a journey easy, surely they (would) have followed you but was long for them the distance. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, certainly we (would) have come forth with you." They destroy their own selves and Allah knows (that) indeed, they (are) surely liars.

English - Arberry

Were it a gain near at hand, and an easy journey, they would have followed thee; but the distance was too far for them. Still they will swear by God, 'Had we been able, we would have gone out with you,' so destroying their souls; and God knows that they are truly liars.

English - Maududi

Were it a gain at hand or a short journey, they would have surely followed you, but the distance seemed too far to them. Still they will swear by Allah: "If only we could, we would surely have gone forth with you." They merely bring ruin upon themselves. Allah knows well that they are liars.

English - Ahmed Ali

(O Prophet), had the gain been close at hand, and easy the journey, they would surely have followed you; but hard was the journey and long the going. Even then they swear by God (and say): "If we had the strength we would surely have gone out with you." They are only ruining themselves, for God is aware they lie.

English - Yusuf Ali

If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them. They would indeed swear by Allah, "If we only could, we should certainly have come out with you": They would destroy their own souls; for Allah doth know that they are certainly lying.

And on that day We shall present Hell, face to face, to the disbelievers[1734A]

For the dreadful and devastating Divine punishment that shall descend upon Gog and Magog see Surah Ar-Rahman.

English - Five Volume Translation

And on that day We shall present Hell, face to face, to the disbelievers,[2137]

Commentary:

Those will be terrible days. The fire of Hell will be kindled for the sinful. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and man will consign God to oblivion and, sinking in sin and iniquity, he will render himself deserving of Divine punishment.

اور وہ دن ہوگا جب ہم جہنم کو کافروں کے سامنے لائیں گے
