‘And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the town, and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been a righteous man, so thy Lord desired that they should reach their age of full strength and take out their treasure, as a mercy from thy Lord; and I did it not of my own accord. This is the explanation of that which thou wast not able to bear with patience.’

اور جہاں تک دیوار کا تعلق ہے تو وہ شہر میں رہنے والے دو یتیم لڑکوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان کے لئے خزانہ تھا اور اُن کا باپ ایک نیک شخص تھا۔ پس تیرے ربّ نے ارادہ کیا کہ وہ دونوں اپنی بلوغت کی عمر کو پہنچ جائیں اور اپنا خزانہ نکالیں۔ یہ تیرے ربّ کی طرف سے بطور رحمت تھا۔ اور میں نے ایسا اپنی مرضی سے نہیں کیا۔ یہ حکمت تھی ان باتوں کی جن پر تجھے صبر کی استطاعت نہ تھی۔

French

Et quant au mur, il appartenait à deux orphelins de la ville et en dessous se trouvait un trésor qui leur appartenait. Leur père avait été un homme juste, et par conséquent ton Seigneur a désiré qu’ils atteignent leur âge de pleine vigueur et qu’ils déterrent leur trésor, comme une miséricorde de ton Seigneur ; et je n’ai pas fait cela de ma propre volonté. Voilà l’explication de ce que tu n’as pu supporter avec patience. »

Und was nun die Mauer anlangt, so gehörte sie zwei Waisenknaben in der Stadt, und darunter lag ein Schatz für sie, und ihr Vater war ein Rechtschaffener gewesen; so wünschte dein Herr, dass sie ihre Volljährigkeit erreichen und ihren Schatz heben möchten, als eine Barmherzigkeit von deinem Herrn; und ich tat es nicht aus eigenem Ermessen. “关于那堵墙, 它是那城镇的两个孤儿的。墙的下面有他们的财宝, 他俩的父亲原是一个善人。所以你的养主要他俩达到成年, (亲自) 取出自己的财宝, (这是) 你的养主 (对他俩特别) 的仁慈。这 (工作) 不是我自动做的。这就是对你所不能忍耐的事情的说明。”[773]

E quanto al muro, esso apparteneva a due fanciulli orfani della città; e sotto di esso v'era un tesoro che apparteneva loro e il loro padre era stato un uomo giusto. Quindi il tuo Signore desiderava che essi raggiungessero l'età della piena forza per poter tirare fuori il loro tesoro, come una grazia del tuo Signore. Ed io non l'ho fatto di mia iniziativa. Eccoti la spiegazione di quanto non hai saputo sopportare con pazienza.»

“Y en cuanto al muro, pertenecía a dos huérfanos de la ciudad, y ebajo había un tesoro que les pertenecía, y su padre había sido un hombre justo, por lo que tu Señor deseó que alcanzaran su edad adulta y encontraran su tesoro, como favor de tu Señor; y no lo hice por mi propia voluntad. Ésta es la explicación de lo que no has podido soportar con paciencia”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور (وہ) دیوار[3] اس شہر کے دو یتیم لڑکوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان کا کچھ خزانہ (گڑا ہوا) تھا۔ اور ان کا باپ (ایک) نیک (شخص) تھا۔ اس لئے تیرے رب نے چاہا کہ وہ اپنی مضبوطی کی عمر کو پہنچ جائیں اور (بڑے ہو کر) اپنے خزانہ کو (خود) نکالیں تیرے رب کی طرف سے (ان پر خاص) رحم (ہوا) ہے اور یہ (کام) میں نے اپنے نفس کے حکم [4]سے نہیں کیا۔ یہ اس بات کی حقیقت ہے جس پر تو صبر نہیں کر سکا۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Commentary:

As already pointed out جدار (the wall) represents the elders of the Jews i.e. Moses, Jesus (18:78) and Abraham of whom the Quran says, "and in the next he will surely be among the righteous" (2:131).

By کنز (treasure) is meant the treasure of divine knowledge which was vouchsafed to Moses and Jesus.

The verse purports to say that God preserved in the Quran the great treasure of spiritual knowledge which was vouchsafed to Moses and Jesus (98:4) and which was in danger of being lost because of the irreligiousness of the Jews and their engrossment in worldly affairs so that, when they awaken to a realization of truth, they may accept it.

The words, as a mercy from thy Lord, mean that the preservation by God of the imperishable part of the teachings of Moses and Jesus in the Quran was an act of mercy on His part because the Jews by their repeated rebellion and transgression had forfeited all title to Divine mercy. But despite their iniquities God had mercy on them and preserved their own treasures of spiritual knowledge in the Quran for their guidance.

The words, I did it not of my own accord, mean that the Holy Prophet had no hand in the preservation of this great treasure of divine knowledge. A reference to this fact has also been made in the words, "Nor does he speak of his own desire" (53:4).

After a perusal of the incidents mentioned in the preceding verses and their explanation it becomes abundantly clear that the Vision of Moses has been mentioned here to point to the following facts:

(a) That it was decreed and was in the fitness of things that the Holy Prophet should appear after Christians who constitute the second part of the Mosaic Dispensation had become corrupt.

(b) That because Islamic teaching was based on laws and principles which differed fundamentally from some principles of the Mosaic Law, true and real cooperation between Jews and Muslims was impossible, but salvation without subscribing to Islamic principles was also unthinkable.

(c) That Jews and Christians would refuse to accept the Holy Prophet and would follow their own separate course but they will have to give their allegiance to him in the long run.

(d) That, after a long and fatiguing journey and after having despaired of obtaining real peace and contentment of mind through their own unaided efforts, Jews and Christians would be compelled to take stock of their whole position with the result that they would realize that as their religion had long outlived its usefulness they should have given it up long before.

(e) That after the dawning of this realization upon them, the prophecies concerning them which have been preserved in the Quran will lead Jews and Christians to accept the Holy Prophet.

(f) That after having accepted Islam they will submit themselves to limitations and restrictions which it has imposed upon man to regulate his moral conduct, and that by subduing their unrestrained passions they will become resigned to Divine decree and thus will draw upon themselves God’s grace and will bathe in the sea of His Mercy.

In fact, the Isra’ of Moses constituted a beautiful prelude to the coming Islamic Dispensation which was to supplant the Mosaic Law.

اور اس دیوار کا معاملہ یہ ہے کہ یہ دو یتیم لڑکوں کی ہے جو اس شہر میں رہتے ہیں اس دیوار کے نیچے اِن بچّوں کے لیے ایک خزانہ مدفون ہے اور ان کا باپ ایک نیک آدمی تھا اس لیے تمہارے رب نے چاہا کہ یہ دونوں بچّے بالغ ہوں اور اپنا خزانہ نکال لیں یہ تمہارے رب کی رحمت کی بنا پرکیا گیا ہے، میں نے کچھ اپنے اختیار سے نہیں کر دیا ہے یہ ہے حقیقت اُن باتوں کی جن پر تم صبر نہ کر سکے"

English - Sahih

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."

اور جو دیوار تھی سو وہ اس شہر کے دو یتیم بچوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان کا خزانہ تھا اور ان کا باپ نیک آدمی تھا پس تیرے رب نے چاہا کہ وہ جوان ہو کر اپنا خزانہ تیرے رب کی مہربانی سے نکالیں اور یہ کام میں نے اپنے ارادے سے نہیں کیا یہ حقیقت ہے اس کی جس پر تو صبر نہیں کر سکا

دیوار سے مراد یہود و نصاریٰ کے بزرگ ہیں۔ یعنی موسٰیؑ اور عیسیٰؑ اور ان کے باپ سے مراد حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام اور کَنْز سے مراد وہ علمی خزانہ ہے جسے موسٰیؑ اور عیسیٰ ؑ کی قوموں نے محفوظ کیا ہوا تھا مگر ان کی بے توجہی سے اس کے ضائع ہونے کا خطرہ پیدا ہو گیا تب اسے محمدرسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم نے محفوظ کر دیا یعنی صحیح کلام کو جو بائبل اور انجیل میں تھا محفوظ کر دیا تاکہ جب بھی یہود اور نصاریٰ کو ہوش آئے وہ اس سے فائدہ اٹھا کر محمد رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم پر ایمان لے آئیں۔
