Say, ‘Is there any of your associate- gods who leads to the truth?’ Say, ‘It is Allah Who leads to the truth. Is then He Who leads to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who finds not the way himself unless he be guided? What, then, is the matter with you? How judge ye?’

پوچھ کہ کیا تمہارے شرکاءمیں سے کوئی ایسا بھی ہے جو حق کی طرف ہدایت دے؟ کہہ دے اللہ ہی ہے جو حق کی طرف ہدایت دیتا ہے۔ پس کیا وہ جو حق کی طرف ہدایت دیتا ہے زیادہ حق رکھتا ہے کہ اس کی پیروی کی جائے یا وہ جو ہدایت نہیں پا سکتا مگر محض اس صورت میں کہ اسے ہدایت دی جائے؟ پس تمہیں کیا ہو گیا ہے تم کیسے فیصلے کرتے ہو۔

Dis : « De vos dieux-associés, y a-t-il un qui mène à la vérité ? » Dis : « C’est Allāh Seul Qui mène à la vérité. Est-ce donc Celui Qui mène à la vérité le plus digne d’être suivi, ou celui qui ne trouve pas le chemin lui-même à moins qu’il ne soit guidé ? Qu’avez-vous donc ? Comment jugez-vous ? »

Sprich: "Ist unter euren Göttern etwa einer, der zur Wahrheit leitet?" Sprich: "Allah ist es, Der zur Wahrheit leitet. تو (ان سے یہ بھی) کہہ (کہ) کیا تمہارے (بنائے ہوئے) شریکوں میں سے کوئی (بھی ایسا) ہے جو حق کی طرف (لوگوں) کی رہنمائی کرتا ہو (وہ تو اس سوال کا کیا جواب دیں گے) تو (خود ہی ان سے) کہہ دے (کہ) اللہ (ہی ہے جو) حق کی طرف (لوگوں کی) رہنمائی کرتا ہے پس کیا وہ (خدا) جو حق کی طرف رہنمائی کرتا ہے اس بات کا زیادہ مستحق ہے کہ اس (کے احکام) کی پیروی کی جائے یا وہ (فرضی خدا) جو کہ سوائے اس (صورت) کے کہ اسے (ہدایت کا) راستہ دکھایا جائے (خود بھی) راہ نہیں پاتا پھر بتاؤ تمہیں کیا (ہوگیا) ہے؟ تم کیسے فیصلے کرتے ہو؟

English - Short Commentary Translation

Say, ‘Is there any of your associate-gods who guides to the truth?’ Say, ‘It is Allah alone Who guides to the truth. Is then He Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who finds not the way himself unless he be guided? What, then, is the matter with you? How judge ye?’

Say, ‘Is there any of your associate-gods who leads to the truth?’ Say, ‘It is Allah Who leads to the truth. Is then He Who leads to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who finds not the way himself unless he be guided? What, then, is the matter with you? How judge ye?’[1311]

Important Words:

یھدی yahiddi (finds the way himself) which is really یھتدی (from اھتدی i.e. he found or followed the right way) is the intransitive form of ھدی which means, he directed him aright or caused him to take or follow the right way. یھدی (which is really یھتدی, the letter تا having been merged into the letter د) means, he became rightly directed; he followed or found the right way; he went aright (Lane).

Commentary:

The untenability of their position is brought home to idolaters in this verse. The verse asks them the pertinent question:If God does not send guidance, is it their idols who do so? If the latter have ever sent guidance for men, their votaries could say, with some justification, that God might have entrusted the task of guidance to these idols or deities. But the fact is that not a single instance is on record where an idol or a false deity has ever been credited with the sending down of guidance for mankind. It is indeed strange that, whereas idolatry is so rife in the world, there is not a single book on earth which is alleged to have been revealed to any person by any of the false deities. The world has witnessed all sorts of lies invented by men, but nobody has ever dared to forge the lie that such and such a book has been revealed to him by such and such an idol or deity. Now when the sending down of guidance has never been even falsely ascribed to any idol or deity, how can the idolaters, in the face of guidance having been revealed to mankind in all ages, deny that it is God the Almighty Who sends it down for humanity?

The words, Is then he who leads to the truth more worthy to be followed, may also refer to the Prophets of God who are sent to guide men to the truth. In this case the latter part of the verse would mean, "who is more worthy to be followed, a Prophet of God or the false deities and their votaries who themselves stand in need of guidance and cannot (in opposition to the teaching of the Prophets) offer any revealed teaching?"

اِن سے پُوچھو تمہارے ٹھیرائے ہوئے شریکوں میں کوئی ایسا بھی ہے جو حق کی طرف رہنمائی کرتا ہو؟ کہو وہ صرف اللہ ہے جو حق کی طرف رہنمائی کرتا ہے پھر بھلا بتاؤ، جو حق کی طرف رہنمائی کرتا ہے وہ اِس کا زیادہ مستحق ہے کہ اس کی پیروی کی جائے یا وہ جو خود راہ نہیں پاتا اِلّا یہ کہ اس کی رہنمائی کی جائے؟ آخر تمہیں ہو کیا گیا ہے، کیسے اُلٹے الٹے فیصلے کرتے ہو؟

Say, "Are there of your 'partners' any who guides to the truth?" Say, "Allah guides to the truth. So is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who guides not unless he is guided? Then what is [wrong] with you - how do you judge?"

کہہ دو آیا تمہارے شریکوں میں کوئی ہے جو صحیح راہ بتلائے کہہ دو الله ہی صحیح راہ بتلاتا ہے تو جو اب صحیح راستہ بتلائے اسکی بات ماننی چاہیئے یا اس کی جو خود راہ نہ پائے مگر جب کوئی اوراسے راہ بتلائے سو تمہیں کیا ہوگیا کیا انصاف کرتے ہو

Ask them: 'Are there among ones whom you associate with Allah in His divinity those who can guide to the truth? Say: 'It is Allah alone Who guides to the truth.' Then, who is more worthy to be followed - He Who guides to the truth, or he who cannot find the right way unless others guide him to it? What is wrong with you? How ill do you judge!
