Hast thou not seen that Allah drives the clouds, then joins them together, then piles them up so that thou seest rain issue forth from the midst thereof? And He sends down from the sky clouds like mountains wherein is hail, and He smites therewith whom He pleases, and turns it away from whom He pleases. The flash of its lightning may well-nigh take away the sight.

کیا تو نے نہیں دیکھا کہ اللہ بادل کو چلاتا ہے پھر اُسے اکٹھا کر دیتا ہے پھر اسے تہہ بہ تہہ بنا دیتا ہے پھر تُو دیکھتا ہے کہ اس کے بیچ سے بارش نکلنے لگتی ہے۔ اور وہ بلندیوں سے یعنی ان پہاڑوں سے جو اُن میں واقع ہیں اَولے اتارتا ہے اور پھر جس پر چاہتا ہے اس پر انہیں برساتا ہے اور جس سے چاہے ان کا رخ پھیر دیتا ہے۔ بعید نہیں کہ اس کی بجلی کی چمک (ان کی) بینائیاں اُچک لے جائے۔

N’as-tu pas vu qu’Allāh pousse doucement les nuages, puis les réunit, puis les entasse, de sorte que tu vois de la pluie sortir de leur milieu ? Et Il fait descendre du ciel des nuages comme des montagnes dans lesquels se trouve de la grêle et Il en frappe qui Il veut, et Il l’écarte de qui Il veut. Peu s’en faut que l’éclat de l’éclair n’enlève la vue.

Hast du nicht gesehen, dass Allah die Wolken einhertreibt, dann sie zusammenfügt, dann sie aufeinander schichtet, dass du Regen hervorströmen siehst aus ihrer Mitte? Und Er sendet vom Himmel Berge (von Wolken) nieder, in denen Hagel ist, und Er trifft damit, wen Er will, und wendet ihn ab, von wem Er will. Der Glanz seines Blitzes benimmt fast das Augenlicht.

Non vedi che Allah guida le nubi, quindi le unisce insieme, quindi le ammucchia, così che tu veda la pioggia uscire di mezzo ad esse? Ed Egli fa scendere dal cielo nubi come montagne, in cui c'è grandine, con la quale Egli colpisce chi vuole, tenendola lontano da chi vuole. Poco manca che il fulgore dei suoi lampi non tolga la vista.

¿No has visto que Al‑lah mueve las nubes, después las reúne, a continuación las apila, para que veas caer la lluvia de en medio de ellas? Él envía desde el cielo nubes como montañas en las que hay granizo, y azota con él a quien Le place y libra de él a quien quiere. El resplandor de su relámpago está a punto de hacer perder la vista .

کیا تو نے نہیں دیکھا کہ اللہ بادلوں کو آہستہ آہستہ ہانک کر لاتا ہے پھر ان کے درمیان اتصال پیدا کر دیتا ہے پھر ان کو تہ بہ تہ بنا دیتا ہے پھر تو دیکھتا ہے کہ ان کے اندر سے بارش ٹپکنے لگتی ہے اور وہ بادل میں سے بہت بڑے حجم کی چیزیں گراتا ہے جن میں سے بعض اولوں کی قسم کی ہوتی ہیں اور اس کو جس (قوم) تک چاہتا ہے پہنچا دیتا ہے اور جس سے چاہتا ہے اسے روک لیتا ہے قریب ہوتا ہے کہ اس کی بجلی کی روشنی بعض آنکھوں کو اندھا کر دے۔

Important Words:

رکاماً (piles up) is derived from رکم. They say رکم الشیء i.e. he heaped up, piled up or accumulated the thing; he collected together the thing and put one part of it upon another. رکام means, clouds or sand collected together and piled up (Lane & Aqrab).

ودق (rain) is derived from the root ودق (wadaqa). They say ودق الیه i.e. he became near to him. ودق السماء means, it rained. ودق السیف means, the sword became sharp. الودق means, rain, violent or gentle (Lane & Aqrab).

سنا (flash) is infinitive noun from سنا (sana). They say سنت النار i.e. the fire became high in its light. سنا البرق means, the lightning shone, shone brightly or gleamed or shot up. سنا means, light, or the light of lightning; or light shining or diffusing itself and rising, a high light; shining of weapons (Lane).

Commentary:

The verse gives another simile about the spiritual development of man and about the changes and processes which it undergoes to reach its perfection. The knowledge of such changes and processes is essential to the spiritual pilgrim because without such knowledge he may not know what turnings and crossroads he may have to meet on the way and consequently may despair of success. The verse purports to say that man’s spiritual development is like the formation of clouds from vapours. It begins in this way. The sun of God’s love and grace shines upon that inexhaustible store of man’s capacity to receive and assimilate the Divine Word with which he has been endowed and then it raises vapours which are moved about by the winds of Divine mercy. Just as in the earlier stages the vapours are not visible, so does the change wrought in the pilgrim’s mind by the Sun of Divine love and grace remain unfelt in the earlier stages of his spiritual development with the result that the impatient spiritual wayfarer sometimes loses patience and gives up the endeavour in despair. The simile points out that like invisible vapours which assume a visible form, the change in man’s moral and spiritual progress under Divine mercy assumes a palpable form and begins to be dimly perceptible. But the character and nature of the change is still in a formative stage, where it has not yet attained fixity and strength enough to be helpful to others. The progress, however, continues till like vapours that condense and take the form of showers of rain and sometimes of hail, the God-intoxicated spiritual wayfarer, who has donned the mantle of a Divine Messenger, becomes بشیر i.e. the Bearer of good news for the believers and نذیر i.e. Warner for those who reject the heavenly messages. Even among the believers his influence is not uniform; some benefit by his precept and practice more than the others according to their natural aptitudes, as are the different parts of earth benefited by rain according to the nature of the soil.

Or the significance of the verse may be that for some the revealed Law serves as timely rain which proves highly beneficial and for others it takes the form of hail and storm which brings in its wake destruction and ruin.

کیا تم دیکھتے نہیں ہو کہ اللہ بادل کو آہستہ آہستہ چلاتا ہے، پھر اس کے ٹکڑوں کو باہم جوڑتا ہے، پھر اسے سمیٹ کر ایک کثیف ابر بنا دیتا ہے، پھر تم دیکھتے ہو کہ اس کے خول میں سے بارش کے قطرے ٹپکتے چلے آتے ہیں اور وہ آسمان سے، اُن پہاڑوں کی بدولت جو اس میں بلند ہیں، اولے برساتا ہے، پھر جسے چاہتا ہے ان کا نقصان پہنچاتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے ان سے بچا لیتا ہے اُس کی بجلی کی چمک نگاہوں کو خیرہ کیے دیتی ہے

Do you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains [of clouds] within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightening almost takes away the eyesight.

کیا تو نے نہیں دیکھا الله ہی بادل کو چلاتا ہے پھر اسے ملاتا ہے پھر اسے تہہ بر تہہ کرتا ہے پھر تو بارش کو دیکھتا ہے کہ اس کے بیچ میں سے نکلتی ہے اور آسمان سے جو ان میں اولوں کے پہاڑ ہیں ان میں سے اولے برساتا ہے پھر انہیں جس پر چاہتا ہے گراتا ہے اور جس سے چاہتا ہے روک لیتا ہے قریب ہے کہ اس کی بجلی کی چمک آنکھوں کو لے جائے
