وَقَطَّعْنَٰهُمُ ٱثْنَتَىْ عَشْرَةَ أَسْبَاطًا أُمَمًا ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰهُ قَوْمُهُۥٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۚ وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْغَمَٰمَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَٰكُمْ ۚ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
And We divided them into twelve tribes, distinct peoples. And We revealed to Moses, when his people asked drink of him, saying, ‘Strike the rock with thy rod;’ and from it there gushed forth twelve springs; every tribe knew their drinking place. And We caused the clouds to overshadow them, and We sent down for them Manna and Salwa: ‘Eat of the good things We have provided for you.’ And they wronged Us not, but it was themselves that they wronged.

اور ہم نے ان کو بارہ قبیلوں یعنی قوموں میں تقسیم کردیا اور ہم نے موسیٰ کی طرف جب اس سے اس کی قوم نے پانی مانگا وحی کی کہ چٹان پر اپنے عصاسے ضرب لگا تو اس سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ پڑے اور سب لوگوں نے اپنے اپنے پینے کی جگہ معلوم کر لی اور ہم نے ان پر بادلوں کا سایہ کیا اور اُن پر مَن اور سَلوٰی اتارے۔ (اور کہا کہ) جو کچھ ہم نے تمہیں رزق عطا کیا ہے اس میں سے پاکیزہ چیزیں کھاؤ۔ اور انہوں نے ظلم ہم پر نہیں کیا بلکہ وہ خود اپنی جانوں پر ظلم کرنے والے تھے۔
French
Et Nous les avons divisés en douze tribus, par peuples distincts. Et Nous avons révélé à Moïse, quand son peuple lui demanda de l’eau : « Frappe le rocher avec ton bâton » ; et douze sources en jaillirent ; chaque tribu savait son abreuvoir. Et Nous avons fait les nuages les couvrir de leur ombre. Et Nous avons fait descendre pour eux Manna et Salwā, et Nous avons dit : « Nourrissez-vous de ces bonnes choses que Nous vous avons accordées. » Et ce n’est pas à Nous, mais à eux-mêmes, qu’ils ont fait tort.

Wir teilten sie in zwölf Stämme, (gesonderte) Nationen, und Wir offenbarten Moses, als sein Volk von ihm Trank forderte: "Schlage an den Felsen mit deinem Stab." Da entsprangen ihm zwölf Quellen: so kannte jeder Stamm seinen Trinkplatz. Und Wir ließen die Wolken sie überschatten und sandten ihnen Manna und Salwa* hinab: "Esset von den guten Dingen, die Wir euch beschert haben." Und sie schädigten nicht Uns, sondern sich selbst haben sie Schaden getan.

Y los dividimos en doce tribus de pueblos distintos. Y evelamos a Moisés, cuando su pueblo le pidió de beber, diciéndole “golpea la roca con tu cayado”, y de ella brotaron doce manantiales; cada tribu sabía su lugar donde beber; e hicimos que las nubes los cubrieran, enviándoles miel y codornices: “comed de las cosas buenas que os hemos proporcionado”. Mas no fue a Nosotros a quien perjudicaron, sino que fue a sí mismos a quienes se perjudicaban.
اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اور ہم نے ان کو بارہ قبیلوں میں تقسیم کر دیا (جو اب ترقی کرکے قومیں بن گئے ہیں) اور ہم نے موسیٰ کی طرف جب اس سے اس کی قوم نے پانی مانگا‘ وحی کی کہ (جا اور) اپنا سونٹا (فلاں[1]) پتھر پر مار (جب اس نے ایسا کیا) تو اس میں سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ پڑے۔ ہر قوم نے اپنا اپنا گھاٹ جان لیا اور ہم نے ان پر بادل کا سایہ کیا اور ہم نے ان کے لئے ترنجبین اور بٹیر پیدا کئے (اورکہا) کہ جو کچھ ہم نے دیا ہے (اس میں سے) طیب چیزیں کھاؤ اور انہوں نے ہم پر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ وہ اپنی جانوں پر ظلم کر رہے تھے۔
قرآن مجید میں حَجَر (یعنی پتھر) پر اَلْ آیا ہے اور اس کے معنے ’’فلاں‘‘ کے ہوتے ہیں۔ یعنی حکم یہ نہ تھا کہ کسی پتھر کو مار بلکہ یہ تھا کہ فلاں پتھر کے نیچے چشمہ ہے اسے سونٹا مار کر توڑ دو۔ پانی نکل آئے گا۔ میں نے کشمیر میں ایک چشمہ دیکھا جو پتھر کے نیچے سے آتا تھا اور اس میں سے چودہ چشمے بہتے تھے۔

اور ہم نے اس قوم کو بارہ گھرانوں میں تقسیم کر کے انہیں مستقل گروہوں کی شکل دے دی تھی اور جب موسیٰؑ سے اس کی قوم نے پانی مانگا تو ہم نے اس کو اشارہ کیا کہ فلاں چٹان پر اپنی لاٹھی مارو چنانچہ اس چٹان سے یکایک بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے اور ہر گروہ نے اپنے پانی لینے کی جگہ متعین کر لی ہم نے اُن پر بادل کا سایہ کیا اور اُن پر من و سلویٰ اتارا کھاؤ وہ پاک چیزیں جو ہم نے تم کو بخشی ہیں مگر اس کے بعد انہوں نے جو کچھ کیا تو ہم پر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ آپ اپنے ہی اوپر ظلم کرتے رہے

And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes [as distinct] nations. And We inspired to Moses when his people implored him for water, "Strike with your staff the stone," and there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Every people knew its watering place. And We shaded them with clouds and sent down upon them manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not, but they were [only] wronging themselves.

اور ہم نے انہیں جدا جدا کر دیا بارہ دادوں کی اولاد جو بڑی بڑی جماعتیں تھیں اور موسیٰ کو ہم نے حکم بھیجا جب اس کی قوم نے اس سے پانی مانگا کہ اپنی لاٹھی اس پتھر پر مار تو اس سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے ہر قبیلہ نے اپنے گھاٹ پہچان لیا اور ہم نے ان پر ابر کا سایہ کیا اور ہم نے من و سلویٰ اتارا ہم نے جو ستھری چیزیں تمہیں دی ہیں وہ کھاؤ اور انہوں نے ہمارا کوئی نقصان نہیں کیا لیکن اپنا ہی نقصان کرتے تھے

And We divided them (into) two (and) ten [i.e. twelve] tribes (as) communities. And We inspired to Musa, when asked him for water his people, [that] "Strike with your staff the stone." Then gushed forth from it two (and) ten [i.e. twelve] springs. Certainly, knew each people their drinking place. And We shaded [on] them (with) the clouds and We sent down upon them, the manna and the quails. "Eat from (the) good things which We have provided you." And not they wronged Us but they were (to) themselves doing wrong.

And We outspread the cloud to overshadow them, and We sent down manna and quails upon them: 'Eat of the good things wherewith We have supplied you.' And they worked no wrong upon Us, but themselves they wronged.

Commentary:
The reference in the verse may be to the Battle of Badr when rain came as a welcome relief to Muslims, and angels descended in large numbers to help them. Elsewhere the Quran says that in the battlefield of Badr as many as five thousand angels descended to attack disbelievers (3:125-126). It further says, "God revealed to the angels, saying, ‘I am with you; so give firmness to those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Smite, then, the upper parts of their necks, and smite off all finger-tips" (8:13).

آسمان کو چیرتا ہوا ایک بادل اس روز نمودار ہو گا اور فرشتوں کے پرے کے پرے اتار دیے جائیں گے
