English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
And when they entered in the manner their father had commanded them, it could not avail them anything against Allah, except that there was a desire in Jacob’s mind which he thus satisfied; and he was surely possessed of great knowledge because We had taught him, but most men know not.
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
پس جب وہ جہاں سے ان کے باپ نے حکم دیا تھا داخل ہوئے۔ وہ اللہ کی تقدیر سے تو انہیں قطعاً بچا نہیں سکتا تھا مگر محض یعقوب کے دل کی ایک خواہش تھی جو اس نے پوری کی۔ اور یقیناً وہ صاحبِ علم تھا اس لئے کہ ہم نے اسے اچھی طرح علم سکھایا تھا مگر اکثر لوگ نہیں جانتے۔
French
Et lorsqu’ils sont entrés de la manière que leur père leur avait commandé, cela ne pouvait leur être d’aucun recours contre Allāh, excepté que Jacob avait ressenti une impulsion intuitive en lui qu’il essaya de satisfaire ainsi ; et il était assurément doué d’un grand savoir car Nous l’avions instruit, mais la plupart des hommes ne savent pas.

Als sie auf die Art eingezogen waren, wie ihr Vater es ihnen geboten hatte, konnte er ihnen nichts nützen gegen Allah, außer dass ein Verlangen in Jakob war, das er (so) befriedigte; und er besaß gewiss großes Wissen, weil Wir ihn belehrt hatten, allein die meisten Menschen wissen es nicht.

Cuando entraron de la manera en que su padre les había ordenado, no les sirvió de nada contra Al-lah, salvo el hecho de que Jacob tenía un deseo intuitivo que satisfizo de ese modo; pues él poseía, en verdad, un gran conocimiento; porque Nosotros se lo habíamos enseñado, aunque la mayoría de los hombres lo ignoran.
اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اور جب اس طریق کے مطابق جس کا حکم ان کے باپ نے انہیں دیا تھا وہ داخل ہوئے تو وہ غرض پوری ہو گئی جس کے لئے انہیں یہ حکم دیا گیا تھا مگر یعقوب اپنی تدبیر سے اُن (یعنی بیٹوں) کو خدائی تدبیر سے بچا نہیں سکتا تھا۔ ہاں مگر یعقوب کے دل میں ایک خواہش تھی جسے اس نے (اس[1] طرح) پورا کر لیا اور چونکہ ہم نے اس کو (یعنی یعقوب کو) علم دیا تھا۔ وہ بڑا علم والا تھا لیکن اکثر لوگ (اس حقیقت کو) نہیں جانتے۔
اور دوسرے بیٹوں سے پہلے بن یامین کو یوسفؑ سے ملانے میں کامیاب ہو گیا۔
English - Short Commentary Translation
And when they entered in the manner their father had commanded them, Jacob’s purpose was fulfilled but it could not avail them anything against Allah, except that there was a desire in Jacob’s mind which he thus satisfied;[1392] and he was surely possessed of great knowledge We had taught him, but most men know not.
Jacob seemed to have realized or he had possibly been informed by Divine revelation that the man in Egypt was Joseph and therefore he asked his sons to enter the town separately so that Joseph might have an opportunity to meet and talk to his brother, Benjamin, in private.

And when they entered in the manner their father had commanded them, Jacob’s purpose was fulfilled but it could not avail them anything against Allah, except that there was a desire in Jacob’s mind which he thus satisfied; and he was surely possessed of great knowledge because We had taught him, but most men know not.[1570]
Commentary:
The desire of Jacob alluded to in this verse is the same to which reference has been made in the preceding verse viz. that they should not be suspected as spies or that, being informed by revelation that the official who distributed the grain was none other than Joseph, Jacob wanted Benjamin to meet him separately from the others.

اور واقعہ بھی یہی ہوا کہ جب وہ اپنے باپ کی ہدایت کے مطابق شہر میں (متفرق دروازوں سے) داخل ہوئے تو اس کی یہ احتیاطی تدبیر اللہ کی مشیت کے مقابلے میں کچھ بھی کام نہ آسکی ہاں بس یعقوبؑ کے دل میں جو ایک کھٹک تھی اسے دور کرنے کے لیے اس نے اپنی سی کوشش کر لی بے شک وہ ہماری دی ہوئی تعلیم سے صاحب علم تھا مگر اکثر لوگ معاملہ کی حقیقت کو جانتے نہیں ہیں

And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allah at all except [it was] a need within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.

اور جب کہ اسی طرح داخل ہوئے جس طرح ان کے باپ نے حکم دیا تھا انہیں الله کی کسی بات سے کچھ نہ بچا سکتا تھا مگر یعقوب کے دل میں ایک خواہش تھی جسے اس نے پورا کیا اور وہ تو ہمارے سکھلانے سے علم والا تھا لیکن اکثر آدمی نہیں جانتے

And when they entered after the manner their father commanded them, it availed them nothing against God; but it was a need in Jacob's soul that he so satisfied. Verily he was possessed of a knowledge for that We had taught him; but most men know not.

And it so happened that when they entered the city (by many gates) as their father had directed them, this precautionary measure proved ineffective against Allah's will. There was an uneasiness in Jacob's soul which he so tried to remove. Surely he was possessed of knowledge owing to the knowledge that We bestowed upon him. But most people do not know the truth of the matter.

Ô vous qui croyez ! Préservez vos propres personnes ainsi que vos familles d’un Feu, dont le combustible est fait d’hommes et de pierres, et auquel sont préposés des anges durs et sévères qui ne désobéissent pas à Allāh en ce qu’Il leur commande, et font ce qu’il leur est commandé.

¡Oh vosotros, los creyentes! Precaveos, vosotros y vuestras familias, de un Fuego cuyo combustible está formado de hombres y piedras, cuidado por ángeles inexorables y severos que no desobedecen a Al-lah en lo que Él les manda y hacen lo que se les ordena.
اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اے مومنو! اپنے اہل کو بھی اور اپنی جانوں کو بھی دوزخ سے بچاؤ جس کا ایندھن خاص لوگ (یعنی کافر) ہونگے اور اسی طرح پتھر (جن[1] سے بت بنے) اس (دوزخ) پر ایسے ملائکہ مقرر ہیں جو کسی کی منت سماجت سننے والے نہیں بلکہ اپنے فرض کے ادا کرنے میں بڑے سخت ہیں اور اللہ نے ان کو جو حکم دیا ہے اس کی وہ نافرمانی نہیں کرتے اور جو کچھ کہا جاتا ہے وہی کرتے ہیں۔
سوال ہو سکتا ہے کہ بتوں کو آگ میں ڈالنے کی کیا غرض ہے وہ تو بے جان ہیں۔ اس کا جواب یہ ہے کہ گو وہ بے جان ہیں مگر کفار تو ان کو خدائی صفات دیتے تھے۔ ان کو جہنم میں ڈالنے سے کفار پر ان کے عقیدہ کی غلطی ثابت ہوتی تھی۔ اور بتوں پر کوئی ظلم نہ تھا۔ کیونکہ وہ بے جان ہیں۔

Commentary:
As the Surah deals particularly with domestic disagreements and conflicts, believers are enjoined to train and educate members of their household in such a way that there should reign complete harmony, peace and concord in the house as it prevails in Paradise.
اردو ترجمہ مودودی
اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو، بچاؤ اپنے آپ کو اور اپنے اہل و عیال کو اُس آگ سے جس کا ایندھن انسان اور پتھر ہوں گے جس پر نہایت تند خو اور سخت گیر فرشتے مقرر ہوں گے جو کبھی اللہ کے حکم کی نافرمانی نہیں کرتے اور جو حکم بھی انہیں دیا جاتا ہے اسے بجا لاتے ہیں
