وَاخۡتَارَ مُوۡسٰی قَوۡمَہٗ سَبۡعِیۡنَ رَجُلًا لِّمِیۡقٰتِنَا ۖ فَلَمَّاۤ اَخَذَتۡہُمُ الرَّجۡفَۃُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوۡ شِئۡتَ اَہۡلَکۡتَہُمۡ مِّنۡ قَبۡلُ وَاِیّٰیَ ۖ اَتُہۡلِکُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ السُّفَہَآءُ مِنَّاۤ ۖ اِنۡ ہِیَ اِلَّا فِتۡنَتُکَ تُضِلُّ بِہَا مَنۡ تَشَآءُ وَتَہۡدِیۡ مَنۡ تَشَآءُ ۖ اَنۡتَ وَلِیُّنَا فَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَارۡحَمۡنَا ۖ وَاَنۡتَ خَیۡرُ الۡغٰفِرِیۡنَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointment. But when the earthquake overtook them, he said, ‘My Lord, if Thou hadst pleased, Thou couldst have destroyed them before this, and me also. Wilt Thou destroy us for that which the foolish among us have done? This is nothing but a trial from Thee. Thou causest to perish thereby whom Thou pleasest and Thou guidest whom Thou pleasest. Thou art our Protector; forgive us then and have mercy on us, for Thou art the Best of those who forgive.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور موسیٰ نے ہمارے مقررہ وقت کے لئے اپنی قوم کے ستر آدمیوں کا انتخاب کیا۔ پس جب ان کو زلزلہ نے پکڑا تو اس نے کہا اے میرے ربّ! اگر تُو چاہتا تو اس سے پہلے ہی ان سب کو ہلاک کر دیتا اور مجھے بھی۔ کیا تو ہمیں اس فعل کی بنا پر جو ہمارے بیوقوفوں سے سرزد ہوا ہلاک کر دے گا۔ یقیناً یہ تیری طرف سے ایک آزمائش ہے تُو اس (آزمائش) سے جسے چاہتا ہے گمراہ ٹھہراتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے ہدایت عطا کرتا ہے۔ تُو ہی ہمارا ولی ہے پس ہمیں بخش دے اور ہم پر رحم کر اور تو بخشنے والوں میں سب سے بہتر ہے۔

French

Et Moïse choisit de son peuple soixante-dix hommes pour Notre rendez-vous. Mais quand le tremblement de terre les surprit, il dit : « Mon Seigneur, si Tu l’avais voulu, Tu aurais pu les anéantir avant, et moi aussi avec. Veux-Tu donc nous anéantir pour ce que les insensés d’entre nous ont commis ? Ceci n’est qu’une épreuve de Ta part par laquelle Tu laisses s’égarer qui Tu veux, et Tu guides qui Tu veux. Tu es notre Protecteur ; pardonne-nous donc et aie pitié de nous, car Tu es en vérité le Meilleur de ceux qui pardonnent.

German

Da erwählte Moses aus seinem Volk siebzig Männer für die Verabredung mit Uns. Doch als das Erdbeben sie ereilte, sprach er: «Mein Herr, hättest Du es gewollt, Du hättest sie zuvor vertilgen können und mich ebenfalls. Willst Du uns denn austilgen um dessentwillen, was die Toren unter uns getan? Dies ist nur eine Prüfung von Dir. Damit erklärst Du den zum Irrenden, wen Du willst, und weisest den Weg, wem Du willst. Du bist unser Beschützer, so vergib uns denn und erbarme Dich unser, denn Du bist der beste der Verzeihenden.

穆撒为了带自己的民族到我预约的地方, 从他们中选择了七十人。后来当地震袭击了他们, 穆撒说: “我的养主啊! 如果你愿意,在这以前 [b]你也可以毁灭他们和我。难道 (现在) 你要由于我们中愚人的行为而毁灭我们? 这确是你的考验。你以它判定你所意欲的人为迷误的, 领导你所意欲的人。你是我们的朋友, 所以求你宽恕我们, 仁慈对待我们。你是最宽恕者;

13:28.

Italian

E Mosè scelse fra il suo popolo settanta uomini per l'appuntamento stabilito da Noi. Ma quando su di loro si abbatté il terremoto, egli disse: «Signore mio, se Tu l'avessi voluto, avresti potuto distruggere loro e me anche prima di questo. Ci distruggerai Tu per quello che gli stolti tra noi hanno fatto? Questa non è altro che una Tua prova. Con essa, Tu fai perdere chi vuoi e guidi chi vuoi. Tu sei il nostro Protettore. Perdonaci dunque, ed abbi misericordia di noi, perché Tu sei il Migliore tra coloro che perdonano.

Spanish

Y Moisés eligió de su pueblo a setenta hombres para Nuestra cita. Pero cuando el terremoto cayó sobre ellos, dijo: “Señor mío, si se Te ubiera antojado, podrías haberlos destruido antes de esto, y también a mí. ¿Vas a destruirnos por lo que han hecho los necios de entre nosotros? Esto no es más que una prueba tuya. Tú haces que en ella perezcan quienes quieres y guías a quienes deseas. Tú eres nuestro Protector; perdónanos y ten misericordia de nosotros, pues Tú eres el Mejor de los que perdonan”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور موسیٰ نے اپنی قوم سے ستر آدمیوں کو ہمارے وعدہ کے مقام پر لانے کے لئے چنا۔ پھر جب ان پر زلزلہ [1]آیا تو اس نے کہا‘ اے میرے رب! اگر تو چاہتا تو ان کو بھی اور مجھ کو بھی پہلے ہی ہلاک کر دیتا۔ کیا تو ہم کو بے وقوفوں کی بیوقوفی کے فعل کی سزا میں ہلاک کرنا چاہتا ہے؟ یہ (جو کچھ ہوا) صرف تیری ایک آزمائش تھی تو ان (آزمائشوں) کے ذریعہ سے جن کو چاہتا ہے گمراہ قرار دیتا ہے اور جن کو چاہتا ہے ہدایت دیتا ہے تو ہمارا کفیل اور دوست ہے پس ہم کو بخش دے اور ہم پر رحم کر اور تو بخشنے والوں میں سے سب سے بہتر ہے۔

زلزلہ تو طبعی طور پر آیا تھا‘ مگر قوم کے شرک کی وجہ سے حضرت موسیٰ علیہ السلام کو خیال ہوا کہ شاید ہمیں سزا دینے کے لئے آیا ہے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointment. But when the earthquake overtook[1057A] them, he said, ‘My Lord, if Thou hadst pleased, [d]Thou couldst have destroyed them before this, and me too. Wilt Thou destroy us for that which the foolish among us have done? This is nothing but a trial from Thee. Thou causest to perish thereby whom Thou pleasest and Thou guidest whom Thou pleasest. Thou art our Protector; forgive us then and have mercy on us and Thou art the Best of those who forgive;

13:28.

The earthquake was a natural phenomenon. Moses feared that it was a Divine punishment for the sins of his people.

And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointment. But when the earthquake overtook them, he said, ‘My Lord, if Thou hadst pleased, [a]Thou couldst have destroyed them before this, and me also. Wilt Thou destroy us for that which the foolish among us have done? This is nothing but a trial from Thee. Thou causest to perish thereby whom Thou pleasest and Thou guidest whom Thou pleasest. Thou art our Protector; forgive us then and have mercy on us, and Thou art the best of those who forgive.[1045]

13:28.

Commentary:

This verse shows that the tablets were not broken as alleged by the Bible; for if they were broken, how could the very tablets have been taken up again. The word نسخة (writing) explained above also hints that Moses did not receive any written tablets from God but that he himself wrote them under divine inspiration.

The word سفھاء (the foolish) is used here not in the general sense but in the specific sense of the foolish in the ways of God, i.e. "ignorant", for every act of disobedience is born of ignorance, even if it is committed intentionally. Those, who were clever enough to render Aaron helpless, could not be called fools in the ordinary sense of the word. They are called سفھاء (fools) because they did not possess the sense and intelligence to understand the Word of God.

The incident of the calf proved to be the first occasion when the transgressors among the Israelites became distinguished from true believers, and the prophecy, Soon shall I show you the abode of the transgressors (7:146), was fulfilled.

اور اُس نے اپنی قوم کے ستر آدمیوں کو منتخب کیا تاکہ وہ (اُس کے ساتھ) ہمارے مقرر کیے ہوئے وقت پر حاضر ہوں جب اِن لوگوں کو ایک سخت زلزلے نے آ پکڑا تو موسیٰؑ نے عرض کیا "اے میرے سرکار، آپ چاہتے تو پہلے ہی اِن کو اور مجھے ہلاک کرسکتے تھے کیا آپ اُس قصور میں جو ہم میں سے چند نادانوں نے کیا تھا ہم سب کو ہلاک کر دیں گے؟ یہ تو آپ کی ڈالی ہوئی ایک آزمائش تھی جس کے ذریعہ سے آپ جسے چاہتے ہیں گمراہی میں مبتلا کر دیتے ہیں اور جسے چاہتے ہیں ہدایت بخش دیتے ہیں ہمارے سر پرست تو آپ ہی ہیں پس ہمیں معاف کر دیجیے اور ہم پر رحم فرمائیے، آپ سب سے بڑھ کر معاف فرمانے والے ہیں

English - Sahih

And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment. And when the earthquake seized them, he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.

اور موسیٰ نے اپنی قوم میں سے ستر مرد ہمارے وعدہ گا ہ پر لانے کے لیے چن لیے پھر جب انہیں زلزلہ نے پکڑ ا تو کہا اے میرے رب اگر تو چاہتا تو پہلے ہی انہیں ہلاک کر دیتا کیا تو ہمیں اس کام پر ہلاک کرتا ہے جو ہماری قوموں کے بیوقوفوں نے کیا یہ سب تیری آزمائش ہے جسے تو چاہے اس سے گمراہ کر دے اور جسے چاہے سیدھا رکھے تو ہی ہمارا کارساز ہے سو ہمیں بخش دے اور ہم پر رحم کر اور تو سب سے بہتر بخشنے والا ہے

And chose Musa (from) his people seventy men for Our appointment. Then when seized them the earthquake he said, "O my Lord! If you (had) willed, You (could) have destroyed them from before and me. Would You destroy us for what did the foolish among us? Not it (was) but Your trial, You let go astray by it whom You will and You guide whom You will. You (are) our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You (are) Best (of) Forgivers.

Wilt Thou destroy us for what the foolish ones of us have done? It is only Thy trial, whereby Thou leadest astray whom Thou wilt, and guidest whom Thou wilt. Thou art our Protector; so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for Thou art the best of forgivers.

And out of his people Moses singled out seventy men for Our appointment. Then, when violent shaking seized them, he addressed his Lord: 'Had You willed, O my Lord, You could have destroyed them and me long ago. Will You destroy us for what the fools amongst us did? That was nothing but a trial from You whereby You mislead whom You will and guide whom You will. You alone are our guardian. Forgive us, then, and have mercy upon us. You are the best of those who forgive.

Moses chose seventy of his people for the appointment (on Mount Sinai). When they arrived they were seized by a tremor. (Moses) said: "O Lord, if You had so pleased You could have annihilated them and me before this. Will You destroy us for something the foolish among us have done?
