يَبْطِشُ and
بَطُشَ ,
(S, Msb, K,) the former of which is that adopted
by the seven readers (Msb, TA) in chap. xliv.
verse 15 of the Kur, (TA,) inf. n. بَطْشٌ, (S, Mgh,
Msb,) He seized him violently; laid violent hands
upon him: (S, Msb:) assaulted him: (S:) or he
seized him with violence and assault: (A, K:) or
he seized him vehemently, in anger: (Mgh:) and
he laid hold upon him (Mgh, TA) vehemently,
(TA,) in making an assault: (Mgh, TA:) and
↓ أَبْطَشَهُ signifies the same as بَطَشَ بِهِ, (K,) but is
rare, occurring in the words [of the Quran xliv. 15],
يَوْمَ نُبْطِشُ البَطْشَةَ الكُبْرَى, accord. to the reading
of El-Hasan and Ibn-Rejà, [meaning On the day
when we make the greatest assault:] or, accord.
to AHát, [and Bd says the like,] the meaning is,
[on the day when] we give power over them to
such as shall assault them [with the great assault;
or make to assault with the great assault]. (TA.)

strongly. (Lth, K, TA.) In the saying of El-
Hulwánee, وَ مَا لَا يَقَعُ عَلَيْهِ العَيْنُ وَ لَا يَبْطِشُهُ الكَفُّ,
[meaning And that upon which the eye falls not,
and of which the hand does not take hold,] the
prep. [بِ] is understood; or the verb is thus used
as implying the meaning of الأَخْذُ and التَّنَاوُلُ.

On the day when We shall seize you with the great seizure,[2696] you will know that We will, certainly, exact retribution.
The 'great seizure' may refer to the defeat of the Quraish at the Battle of Badr, or to the Fall of Mecca.

On the day when We shall seize you with the great seizure, you will know We certainly will exact retribution.[3708]
Commentary:
The "great seizure" may refer to the defeat of the Quraish at the Battle of Badr or to the Fall of Mecca when all their glory departed and their pride was humbled in the dust. They came to the Holy Prophet (whom they had hounded out of Mecca only eight years before) begging for mercy.

اور ہم ان سے پہلے بہت سی قومیں ہلاک کر چکے ہیں وہ ان سے زیادہ گرفت کا مادہ رکھتی تھیں لیکن (جب عذاب آیا تو) انہوں نے ملک کے ہر گوشے میں اپنے بچاؤ کے لئے سرنگیں بچھا [1]دیں مگر (ظاہر ہے کہ) خدا کے عذاب سے بچنے کی گنجائش کہاں ہو سکتی ہے۔
یعنی ملک میں ایسے سامان پیدا کرنے شروع کیے کہ وہ اس عذاب سے بچ جائیں لیکن خدائی سزا سے بچنے کے لئے انسانی تدبیریں کہاں کام دے سکتی ہیں۔

19:75; 47:14.
The words in the text literally mean: 'Burrowed into the earth to save themselves,' and seem to refer to the present day underground trenches as protection against bombing attacks.

نقبوا (went about) is the intensive form of نقب (naqaba) which means, he made a hole through a wall; he perforated, pierced or made a hole through anything. نقب فی الارض means, he went or went away through the land or country or journeyed or traversed through the land.
Commentary:
Divine punishment, when it comes, is overwhelming and all-encompassing. There is no escape or refuge from it, however one may try.
