It shall not come upon you but of a sudden.’ They ask thee as if thou wert well acquainted therewith. Say, ‘The knowledge thereof is only with Allah; but most men do not know.’

وہ تجھ سے قیامت سے متعلق سوال کرتے ہیں کہ کب اُسے بپا ہونا ہے۔ تُو کہہ دے کہ اس کا علم صرف میرے ربّ کے پاس ہے۔ اسے اپنے وقت پر کوئی ظاہر نہیں کرے گا مگر وہی۔ وہ آسمانوں اور زمین پر بھاری ہے۔ وہ تم پر نہیں آئے گی مگر دفعۃً۔ وہ (اس کے بارہ میں) تجھ سے اس طرح سوال کرتے ہیں گویا کہ تُو اس کے متعلق سب کچھ جانتا ہے۔ تُو کہہ دے کہ اس کا علم صرف اللہ ہی کے پاس ہے۔ لیکن اکثر لوگ (یہ بات) نہیں جانتے۔

Ils t’interrogent sur l’Heure ; « Quand donc viendra-t-elle ? » Réponds : « La connaissance à ce sujet est seulement avec mon Seigneur. Nul autre que Lui ne pourra la manifester en son temps. Elle est pesante aux cieux et sur la terre. Elle ne tombera sur vous que soudainement. » Ils t’interrogeront comme si tu en étais bien au courant. Dis : « Allāh Seul en a la connaissance ; mais la plupart des hommes ne le savent pas. »

Essi ti domandano riguardo all'Ora: «Quando giungerà?» Rispondi: «Lo sa soltanto il mio Signore; nessuno può farlo accadere al suo momento, al di fuori di Lui.» Essa incombe pesantemente sui cieli e sulla terra e non vi sopraggiungerà se non all'improvviso. Te lo chiedono, come se tu ne fossi ben informato. Rispondi: «Lo sa soltanto Allah, mentre la maggior parte della gente non lo sa.»

(اے رسول)! تیرے مخالف تجھ سے قیامت کے متعلق سوال کرتے ہیں کہ وہ کب آئے گی‘ تو کہہ دے کہ اس کا علم صرف میرے رب کو ہے اس کو اپنے وقت پر صرف وہی ظاہر کرے گا (ہاں) وہ بھاری ہوگی آسمانوں میں بھی اور زمین میں بھی (اور) تمہارے پاس صرف اچانک آئے گی۔ وہ تجھ سے قیامت کے متعلق اس طرح سوال کرتے ہیں گویا تجھے بھی اس کے وقت کی دریافت کی لو لگی ہوئی ہے۔ تو کہہ دے (میرے لئے تو اتنا کافی ہے) کہ اس کا علم صرف اللہ کو ہے لیکن اکثر لوگ اسے جانتے نہیں۔

ایان مرساھا (when will it come to pass?) مرسی is derived from رسا. They say رساالجبل i.e. the mountain was firmly based or fixed upon the ground. رست السفینة means, the ship cast anchor and became stationary. مرسی is the noun-infinitive or a noun of time or a noun of place, meaning, the act of anchoring or the time or place of anchorage; or the time and place of becoming stationary; or of coming to pass. The expression ایان مرساھا means, when will it come to pass, or what is the time of its taking place; or when will it occur or happen? (Lane & Aqrab).

حفی (well acquainted) is derived from حفی which means, he walked barefooted; or his feet became chafed by walking much. حفی به means, he showed him much honour and kindness and affection; or he behaved towards him with solicitude and manifested joy and pleasure. حفی عنه means, he asked or inquired much respecting him; he exceeded the usual bounds in making much inquiry respecting him. So حفی means, showing much honour and solicitude and manifesting joy or pleasure at meeting another; asking or inquiring much respecting another’s state or condition; going to the utmost in asking or inquiring; or knowing in the utmost degree (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The reference in the opening sentence of the verse is to 7:186. When the opponents of Islam were told that their hour had already drawn near, they inquired of the Prophet the exact time when the promised hour would come. The awarding of punishment is as painful to God as the receiving of it is to men, and this is the meaning of the words, It lies heavy on the heavens and the earth. The word "heavens" here represents God and angels, while the word "earth" represents human beings.

The word حفی signifies (1) importunate in inquiring; or (2) well acquainted. The sentence would thus mean: (1) They ask thee concerning the exact time when the hour of their punishment will come to pass, as if thou wert repeatedly inquiring of God as to its time of occurrence; or (2) they ask thee about the time of the "Hour", as if thou wert well acquainted with it. In both these cases the clause would imply that the Holy Prophet neither knew when the "Hour" would come to pass nor was he very solicitous about it.

یہ لوگ تم سے پوچھتے ہیں کہ آخر وہ قیامت کی گھڑی کب نازل ہوگی؟ کہو "اس کا علم میرے رب ہی کے پاس ہے اُسے اپنے وقت پر وہی ظاہر کرے گا آسمانوں اور زمین میں وہ بڑا سخت وقت ہوگا وہ تم پر اچانک آ جائے گا" یہ لوگ اس کے متعلق تم سے اس طرح پوچھتے ہیں گویا کہ تم اس کی کھوج میں لگے ہوئے ہو کہو "اس کا علم تو صرف اللہ کو ہے مگر اکثر لوگ اس حقیقت سے نا واقف ہیں"

English - Sahih

They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most of the people do not know."

They ask you about the Hour, when will be its appointed time? Say, "Only its knowledge (is) with my Lord, no (one) can reveal [it] its time except Him. It lays heavily in the heavens and the earth. They ask you concerning the Hour, when will its coming be? Say: 'The knowledge of it is with my Lord alone: none but He will disclose it at its time.
