Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you be in strongly built towers. And if some good befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah;’ and if evil befalls them, they say, ‘This is from thee.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’ What has happened to these people that they come not near understanding anything?

تم جہاں کہیں بھی ہو موت تمہیں آ لے گی خواہ تم سخت مضبوط بنائے ہوئے بُرجوں میں ہی ہو۔ اور اگر انہیں کوئی حَسَنہ پہنچتی ہے تو وہ کہتے ہیں کہ یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے اور اگر انہیں کوئی بُرائی پہنچتی ہے تو کہتے ہیں(اے محمد!) یہ تیری طرف سے ہے۔ تُو کہہ دے کہ سب کچھ اللہ ہی کی طرف سے ہوتا ہے۔ پس ان لوگوں کو کیا ہوگیا ہے کہ کوئی بات سمجھنے کے قریب تک نہیں پھٹکتے۔

French

Où que vous soyez, la mort vous atteindra, même si vous vous trouvez dans des tours solidement construites. Et si un bien leur arrive, ils disent : « C’est de la part d’Allāh. » Et si un mal les atteint, ils disent : « Cela est de toi. » Dis : « Tout provient d’Allāh. » Qu’ont-ils donc ces gens qui sont si loin de comprendre la moindre chose ?

Wo ihr auch sein mögt, der Tod ereilt euch doch, und wäret ihr in hohen Burgen. Und wenn ihnen Gutes begegnet, sagen sie: "Das ist von Allah", und wenn ihnen Schlimmes begegnet, sagen sie: "Das ist von dir." Sprich: "Alles ist von Allah." Dondequiera que estéis os alcanzará la muerte, aunque os encontréis en torres inexpugnables. Si les sucede algo bueno dicen: “Esto procede de Al-lah”, pero si es una desgracia dicen: “Esto procede de ti”. Diles: “Todo procede de Al-lah”. ¿Qué le ha sucedido a esa gente que apenas comprende nada?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

تم جہاں کہیں بھی ہو موت تمہیں آپکڑے گی خواہ تم مضبوط قلعوں میں (ہی کیوں نہ) ہو اور اگر انہیں (یعنی مذکورہ بالا لوگوں کو) کوئی بھلائی پہنچتی ہے تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے اور اگر کوئی برائی پہنچتی ہے تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ تیری طرف سے ہے۔ تو کہہ دے (کہ) سب (کچھ) اللہ (ہی) کی طرف سے ہے پس ان لوگوں کو کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ کسی بات کے سمجھنے کے قریب (تک) نہیں جاتے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Wheresoever you may be, [a]death will overtake you, even if you be in strongly built towers.[635] And if some good befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah;’ and if evil befalls them, they say, ‘This is from thee.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’[636] What has happened to these people that they would not try to understand anything?

مشیدة (strongly built) is derived from شاد meaning, he plastered (a wall, etc.) with the requisite material. شاد البناء means, he raised the building high. شادوا الدین means, they strengthened and exalted the religion. شیدہ means, he raised it high, namely, a place or a building; or he built it firmly and strongly and raised it high (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The words, Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you, may either refer to the general physical law about the inevitability of death, meaning that when one must die sooner or later, there is no reason why one should be so afraid of death as to refuse to fight in a just cause; or they may be taken as particularly addressed to the hypocrites, who disobeyed the Divine command to fight, thinking that in this way they would be able to avoid death. The verse purports to say that God had decreed that they should suffer death and destruction, however well protected they might be.

It was customary with the hypocrites that when Muslims achieved a success, they attributed it to God, saying that since Islam was a divine religion, it was bound to prosper and succeed. But when a misfortune overtook Muslims, they declared that it was due to mistakes committed by the Prophet. The Quran says that from the viewpoint from which they ascribe success to God, failures are also ascribable to Him. By attributing success to God and failure to the Prophet, the hypocrites sought to discredit the Prophet and to lower him in the estimation of Muslims.

The words, Say, All is from Allah, point to the fact that both successes and misfortunes were foretold by the Holy Prophet (e.g. see 2:156-158). So even the failures which the hypocrites attributed to the Holy Prophet really constituted a proof of his truth. The expression, All is from Allah, is also true in this sense that God is the final controlling power in the universe and whatever good or evil befalls man is attributable either to the general law of nature ordained by God or to one or other of His special decrees.

رہی موت، تو جہاں بھی تم ہو وہ بہرحال تمہیں آکر رہے گی خواہ تم کیسی ہی مضبوط عمارتوں میں ہو اگر انہیں کوئی فائدہ پہنچتا ہے تو کہتے ہیں یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے، اور اگر کوئی نقصان پہنچتا ہے تو کہتے ہیں یہ تمہاری بدولت ہے کہو، سب کچھ اللہ ہی کی طرف سے ہے آخر ان لوگوں کو کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ کوئی بات ان کی سمجھ میں نہیں آتی

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah "; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allah." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement?
