وَلَمَّا وَرَدَ مَآءَ مَدۡیَنَ وَجَدَ عَلَیۡہِ اُمَّۃً مِّنَ النَّاسِ یَسۡقُوۡنَ وَوَجَدَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِہِمُ امۡرَاَتَیۡنِ تَذُوۡدَانِ ۖ قَالَ مَا خَطۡبُکُمَا ۖ قَالَتَا لَا نَسۡقِیۡ حَتّٰی یُصۡدِرَ الرِّعَآءُ ۖ وَاَبُوۡنَا شَیۡخٌ کَبِیۡرٌ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And when he arrived at the water of Midian, he found there a party of men, watering their flocks. And he found beside them two women keeping back their flocks. He said, ‘What is the matter with you?’ They replied, ‘We cannot water our flocks until the shepherds take away their flocks, and our father is a very old man.’

پس جب وہ مدین کے پانی کے گھاٹ پر اترا۔ اس نے وہاں لوگوں کی ایک جماعت کو (اپنے جانوروں کو) پانی پلاتے ہوئے دیکھا اور ان سے پرَے دو عورتوں کو بھی موجود پایا جو اپنے جانوروں کو پرَے ہٹا رہی تھیں۔ اس نے پوچھا کہ تم دونوں کا کیا ماجرا ہے؟ انہوں نے جواب دیا ہم پانی نہیں پلائیں گی یہاں تک کہ چرواہے لَوٹ جائیں اور ہمارا باپ بہت بوڑھا ہے۔

French

Et lorsqu’il arriva au point d’eau de Madian, il y trouva un groupe d’hommes abreuvant leurs troupeaux. Et à l’écart d’eux, il trouva deux femmes qui retenaient leurs troupeaux. Il dit : « Qu’est-ce que vous avez ? » Elles dirent : « Nous ne pouvons abreuver nos troupeaux tant que les pâtres ne seront pas partis, et notre père est très vieux. »

Als er zum Wasser von Midian kam, fand er dort eine Schar von Leuten, die (ihr Vieh) tränkten. Und neben ihnen fand er zwei Frauen, die (ihr Vieh) zurückhielten. Er sprach: "Was ist mit euch?" Sie antworteten: "Wir können (unser Vieh) nicht eher tränken, als bis die Hirten (ihre Herden) fortgetrieben haben, und unser Vater ist ein Greis, hochbetagt."

E una volta giunto alle acque di Madyan, vi trovò un gruppo di uomini che stavano abbeverando i loro greggi. E vide accanto a loro due donne, che trattenevano i loro greggi. Egli disse: «Qual è il vostro problema?» Quelle risposero: «Non possiamo abbeverare i nostri greggi finché i pastori non se ne saranno andati con i loro greggi; e nostro padre è molto vecchio.»

Cuando llegó al agua de Madián, encontró allí a un grupo de hombres, que abrevaban a su ganado. Y tras ellos vio a dos mujeres que guardaban su ganado. Les dijo:”¿Qué os ocurre?”. Ellas respondieron: “No podemos abrevar a nuestros animales mientras que los pastores no se lleven los suyos, y nuestro padre es un hombre muy anciano”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جب وہ مدین شہر کے چشمہ کے پاس آیا تو اس نے اس پر لوگوںں کا ایک گروہ کھڑا دیکھا جو (اپنے جانوروں کو) پانی پلا رہے تھے اور ان سے پیچھے ہٹ کر کھڑی ہوئی دو عورتیں[3] دیکھیں جو اپنے جانوروں کو (ہجوم سے پرے) ہٹا رہی تھیں۔ موسیٰ نے ان سے کہا تم دونوں کو کیا اہم کام [4]درپیش ہے۔ اس پر دونوں عورتوں نے کہا‘ ہم پانی نہیں پلا سکتیں جب تک کہ دوسرے چرواہے چلے نہ جائیں اور ہمارا باپ بہت بوڑھا ہے (اس لئے ہمارے ساتھ نہیں آسکا) ۔

قرآن مجید میں دو عورتوں کا ذکر ہے مگر بائبل خروج باب۲ آیت۱۶ میں لکھا ہے کہ سات لڑکیاں آئی تھیں۔ یہ فرق اس لئے ہے کہ قرآن کریم میں صرف بڑی لڑکیوں کا ذکر ہے۔ کیونکہ آگے بیاہ کا معاملہ آنے والا تھا۔ بائیبل نے اس کے خلاف جتنی لڑکیاں اپنی بہنوں کے ساتھ آئی تھیں خواہ چھوٹی تھیں یا بڑی سب کا ذکر کر دیا ہے۔

یہاں خَطْب کا لفظ ہے جس کے معنے ہیں بڑا اہم کام۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And when he arrived at the water of Midian, he found there a party of men, watering their flocks. And he found beside them two women holding back their flocks. He said, ‘What is your problem?’[2209A] They replied, ‘We cannot water our flocks until the shepherds depart with their flocks, and our father is a very old man.’

What is your trouble; or what is the matter with you?

English - Five Volume Translation

Important Words:

تذودان (keeping back) is formed from ذاد which means, he drove; drove away, and he repelled. ذاد الابل عن الماء means, he kept back or debarred the camels from the water, or prevented them from coming to it. They say ذاد عن عرضه i.e. he defended his honour (Lane & Aqrab).

یصدر (take back) is from صدر which means, he returned, went back or turned away from water. صدر الیه means, he went to it (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The girls seem to be jealous of the honour of their father and therefore in order to disabuse Moses’ mind of any possible misconception that their father was an indolent and easy-going man for having sent his young daughters to the well and keeping himself at home they say that their father is an old man and therefore could not himself come to water his flock.

The general opinion among the commentators of the Quran is that Shu‘aib was Moses’ father-in-law. In the Bible he is called Jethro (Exod. 3:1).

اور جب وہ مَدیَن کے کنوئیں پر پہنچا تو اُس نے دیکھا کہ بہت سے لوگ اپنے جانوروں کو پانی پلا رہے ہیں اور ان سے الگ ایک طرف دو عورتیں اپنے جانوروں کو روک رہی ہیں موسیٰؑ نے اِن عورتوں سے پوچھا "تمہیں کیا پریشانی ہے؟" انہوں نے کہا "ہم اپنے جانوروں کو پانی نہیں پلا سکتیں جب تک یہ چرواہے اپنے جانور نکال کر نہ لے جائیں، اور ہمارے والد ایک بہت بوڑھے آدمی ہیں"

And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."

اور جب مدین کے پانی پر پہنچا وہاں لوگوں کی ایک جماعت کو پانی پلاتے ہوئے پایا اور ان سے ورے دو عورتوں کو پایا جو اپنے جانور روکے ہوئے کھڑی تھیں کہا تمہارا کیا حال ہے بولیں جب تک چرواہے نہیں ہٹ جاتے ہم نہیں پلاتیں اور ہمارا باپ بوڑھابڑی عمر کا ہے

On the right way. And when he came to the waters of Midian he found a company of the people there drawing water, and he found, apart from them, two women holding back their flocks. He said, 'What is your business?' They said, 'We may not draw water until the shepherds drive off; and our father is passing old.'

When he arrived at the spring of Midian, he found there a crowd of people watering their flocks, and he found apart from them two women holding their flocks back. He asked the women: "What is it that troubles you?" They said: "We cannot water our flocks until the shepherds take their flocks away, and our father is a very old man."
