The abbreviated letters Ha Mim stand for the Divine attributes Hamid, Majid (Praiseworthy and Lord of Honour), or for Hayy, Qayyum (Living, Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining). Both these groups of Divine attributes have a strong bearing on the subject-matter of this Surah. The Surah makes repeated reference to the Glory, Majesty and Power of God as the word ‘Arsh which signifies these attributes and which has been twice mentioned in the first few verses, shows. The second main theme is the rise of a spiritually dead people to new life. Both the attributes Hayy (Living) and Qayyum (Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining) have an obvious connection with this subject. This fact explains why the abbreviated letters Ha Mim have been placed in the beginning. It is worthy of particular note that the present and next six Chapters form a special group. Each of them opening with the same abbreviated letters, which indicates that a deep conne

Ha Mim may stand for Hafizul-Kitab (Guardian of the Book) and Munazzilul-Kitab (Revealer of the Book), because all the Chapters which open with these two abbreviated letters deal particularly with the subject of revelation of the Qur’an and its protection and guardianship.

Commentary:
For an explanation of the abbreviated letters حم see the preceding two Surahs. It may, however, be briefly stated here that the abbreviated letters placed at the beginning of different Surahs stand for those Divine attributes which have specific bearing on the subject matter dealt within those Surahs. Thus the letters Ha Mim, besides meaning the "Praiseworthy" and "the Lord of Honour," may also mean حافظ الکتابi.e. Guardian of the Book, and منزل الکتاب i.e. Revealer of the Book, because all the Surahs which open with these two abbreviated letters deal particularly with the subject of revelation of the Quran and its protection and guardianship.

Commentary:
For general treatment of abbreviated letters see 2:2 & 19:2. Verses 40:2, 42:2 & 45:2, however, deal particularly with the letters حم which, as in the preceding six chapters, are placed at the beginning of the present Surah. These letters may be taken as standing for one of the following pairs of Divine attributes, i.e. حمید مجید (Praiseworthy, and Lord of honour), حی قیوم (Living, Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining), منزل الکتاب، حافظ الکتاب (Guardian of the Book and Revealer of the Book). These Divine attributes, as also others that are represented by these abbreviated letters, have a strong bearing on the subject matter of the Surah. Unity of God, refutation and denunciation of idolatry, Divine revelation, with special reference to the revelation of the Quran, life after death and the triumph of truth over falsehood are some of the important topics dealt with in the seven Surahs of the حم group, as Divine attributes represented by these abbreviated letters indicate.
