پس جب ان کے پاس کوئی بھلائی آتی تھی تو وہ کہتے تھے یہ ہمارے ہی لئے ہے اور جب انہیں کوئی برائی پہنچتی تو وہ اسے موسیٰ اور اس کے ساتھیوں کی نحوست قرار دیتے۔ خبردار! ان کی نحوست کا پروانہ اللہ ہی کے پاس ہے۔ لیکن ان میں سے اکثر نہیں جانتے۔

French

Mais lorsque le bonheur leur venait, ils disaient : « Ceci est pour nous. » Et si un malheur les atteignait, ils attribuaient leur mauvaise fortune à Moïse et à ceux qui l’accompagnaient. Or donc, la cause de leur malheur dépend assurément d’Allāh, mais la plupart d’entre eux ne le savent pas.

Doch als dann Gutes zu ihnen kam, sagten sie: "Das gebührt uns." Und wenn sie ein Übel befiel, so schrieben sie das Unheil Moses und den Seinigen zu. Nun ist doch gewiss ihr Unheil bei Allah allein, jedoch die meisten von ihnen wissen es nicht.

Ma quando veniva loro un bene, dicevano: «Questo è per noi.» Se invece il male si abbatteva su di loro, attribuivano la sfortuna a Mosè e a coloro che erano con lui. Ora non c'è dubbio che la causa della loro sfortuna dipende da Allah, ma la maggior parte di essi non lo sa.

Pero cuando les llegó la prosperidad, dijeron: “Esto es para nosotros”. Y si les acaecía la desgracia, achacaban su mala fortuna a Moisés y a los que lo acompañaban. En verdad, la causa de su mala fortuna está en Al-lah. Pero la mayoría no lo saben.

پس جب ان پر خوش حالی کا زمانہ آتا تو وہ کہتے یہ تو ہمارا حق ہے اور اگر ان پر مصیبت کا زمانہ آتا تو موسیٰ اور اس کے ساتھیوں کی نحوست کا نتیجہ سمجھتے۔ خبردار ان کی نحوست (کا سامان) اللہ کے پاس محفوظ ہے لیکن ان میں سے اکثر جانتے نہیں۔

Important Words:

یطیروا (ascribed the evil fortune) is really یتطیروا which is derived from طار, from which also the word طائر (evil fortune ) is derived. They say, طار الطائر i.e. the bird flew or moved in the air by means of its wings. تطیربالشیء means, he augured evil from the thing, because it was the custom among the Arabs to take augury from the flight of birds, طائر meaning a bird. An Arab would say جری له الطائربامرکذا i.e. the bird, viz. fortune brought to him such an event. طائر therefore, means, a bird; a thing from which one augurs either good or evil; an omen, a bodement of good or of evil; an evil fortune or ill-luck; actions; the means of subsistence; the brain. The words انما طائر ھم عند الله mean, their evil fortune is with God; or the cause of their good and evil is with God; or the cause of their evil fortune is with God, i.e. their actions which are the real cause of their evil fortune have reached God and lie in store there (Lane & Lisan). See also 3:50.

Commentary:

The people of Pharaoh ascribed to Moses the evils and misfortunes that befell them. They pretended to think that the miseries with which they had been afflicted were due to the inauspicious advent of Moses. Such has always been the practice of disbelievers. When, at the advent of a heavenly Messenger, misfortunes befall the people in consequence of their misdeeds, they, instead of repenting of their sins, ascribe them to the inauspicious advent of the heavenly Messenger.

Since the word طائر (lit. a bird) signifies an action or evil fortune, the verse constitutes a severe rebuke administered to the people of Pharaoh. They are told that the misfortunes which had befallen them were due not to what they called the "inauspicious" advent of Moses, but to their own sins and iniquitous deeds. Thus the expression, the cause of their evil fortune is with Allah, means that the evil and malicious words which they uttered concerning Moses would be preserved with God and they would be duly punished for their insolence.

مگر اُن کا حال یہ تھا کہ جب اچھا زمانہ آتا تو کہتے کہ ہم اِسی کے مستحق ہیں، اور جب برا زمانہ آتا تو موسیٰؑ اور اس کے ساتھیوں کو اپنے لیے فال بد ٹھیراتے، حالانکہ در حقیقت ان کی فال بد تو اللہ کے پاس تھی، مگر ان میں سے اکثر بے علم تھے

But when good came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allah, but most of them do not know.
