And when We shook the mountain over them as though it were a covering, and they thought it was going to fall on them, We said, ‘Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember what is therein that you may be saved.’

اور (یاد کرو) جب ہم نے پہاڑ کو اُن پر بلند کیا گویا وہ ایک سائبان تھا اور انہوں نے گمان کیا کہ وہ ان پر گرنے ہی والا ہے۔ (اے بنی اسرائیل!) جو ہم نے تمہیں عطا کیا ہے اسے مضبوطی سے پکڑ لو اور جو اس میں ہے (اُسے) یاد رکھو تاکہ تم تقویٰ شعار ہوجاؤ۔

French

Et lorsque Nous avons fait que la montagne penche sur eux comme si c’était une voûte, et ils s’imaginèrent qu’elle allait s’effondrer sur eux, Nous avons dit : « Restez fermement attachés à ce que Nous vous avons donné, et souvenez-vous de ce qui s’y trouve afin que vous soyez à l’abri du mal. »

Und da Wir den Berg über ihnen schüttelten, als wäre er ein Zelt, und sie dachten, er würde auf sie stürzen (da sprachen Wir): "Haltet fest, was Wir euch gegeben haben, und seid eingedenk dessen, was darin steht, auf dass ihr gerettet werdet."

Y recuerda cuando hicimos que el monte colgara sobre ellos como si uera una sombra, y creyeron que iba a caer sobre ellos; dijimos: “Aferraos a lo que os hemos entregado, y recordad lo que hay allí para que os salvéis”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جب ہم نے پہاڑ کو ان کے اوپر[1] اٹھایا گویا کہ وہ ایک سائبان تھا اور انہوں نے خیال کیا کہ وہ ان کے اوپر گرنے ہی والا ہے (اور ہم نے کہا) جو کچھ ہم نے تم کو دیا ہے اسے قوت سے پکڑ لو اور جو کچھ اس میں ہے اسے یاد رکھو تا کہ تم متقی بن جاؤ۔

یعنی ان کے سرداروں کو لے جاکر طُور کے دامن میں کھڑا کر دیا۔ تاکہ وہ بھی اس کا نظارہ کر لیں (دیکھئے خروج باب۱۹ آیت۱۷) جب پہاڑ کے نیچے انسان کھڑا ہو تو پہاڑ ایسا ہی معلوم ہوتا ہے جیسا کہ سائبان کی طرح اس کے سر پر ہے اس کے معنے غیر طبعی کرنے کی کوئی ضرورت نہیں۔ علماء کو اگر کبھی کسی اونچے پہاڑ کی سیر کرادی جائے تو ایسی کہانیوں سے تفسیریں پاک ہو جائیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And when We [b]shook the mountain over them as though it were a covering and they thought it was going to fall on them,[1069] We said, ‘Hold fast that which We have given you and remember what is therein that you may guard against evil.

2:64.

The leading men of Israel were brought to the foot of the mountain (Exod.19: 17). It seemed to them to tower above them like a canopy which might at any time fall upon them.

And [b]when We shook the mountain over them as though it were a covering, and they thought it was going to fall on them, We said, ‘Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember what is therein that you may be saved.’[1060]

2:64.

Important Words:

نتقنا (We shook) is formed from نتق. They say نتقه i.e. (1) he shook it; (2) he raised it; or (3) he spread it. An Arab would say نتق الله فوقھم الجبل i.e. God raised the mountain shaking above them (Aqrab).

ظلة (covering). See 2:211.

Commentary:

Owing to the violent shaking, the Mount looked like being suspended over the heads of the Israelites as though it were a covering. See also 2:64, 94 & 4:155.

انہیں وہ وقت بھی کچھ یاد ہے جبکہ ہم نے پہاڑ کو ہلا کر ان پر اس طرح چھا دیا تھا کہ گویا وہ چھتری ہے اور یہ گمان کر رہے تھے کہ وہ ان پر آ پڑے گا اور اُس وقت ہم نے ان سے کہا تھا کہ جو کتاب ہم تمہیں دے رہے ہیں اسے مضبوطی کے ساتھ تھامو اور جو کچھ اس میں لکھا ہے اسے یاد رکھو، توقع ہے کہ تم غلط روی سے بچے رہو گے

English - Sahih

And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, [and Allah said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah."

پس جب وہ آگئی تو کہا گیا‘ کیا تیرا تخت ایسا ہی ہے؟ اس پر اس نے کہا۔ کہ یوں معلوم ہوتا ہے یہ وہی ہے اور ہم کو اس سے پہلے ہی علم حاصل ہو چکا تھا اور ہم (تیرے) فرمانبردار بن چکے تھے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And when she came, it was said to her, ‘Is thy throne like this?’ She replied, ‘It is as though it were the same. And we had been given knowledge before this, and we have already submitted.’[2176]

The words, we had been given knowledge before this, signify that the Queen had already become conversant with the great power and resources of Solomon and had made up her mind to give her allegiance to him.

So when she arrived, it was said [to her], "Is your throne like this?" She said, "[It is] as though it was it." [Solomon said], "And we were given knowledge before her, and we have been Muslims [in submission to Allah].

اور نیکی اور بدی برابر نہیں ہو سکتی۔ اور تو برائی کا جواب نہایت نیک سلوک سے دے اس کا نتیجہ یہ ہوگا کہ وہ شخص کہ اس کے اور تیرے درمیان عداوت پائی جاتی ہے‘ وہ تیرے حسن سلوک کو دیکھ کر ایک گرم جوش دوست بن جائے گا۔

As the preaching of truth inevitably brings in its wake hardships for the preacher, the verse enjoins upon him to bear them patiently and with fortitude, and even to return good for the evil he receives at the hands of his persecutors.

اور اے نبیؐ، نیکی اور بدی یکساں نہیں ہیں تم بدی کو اُس نیکی سے دفع کرو جو بہترین ہو تم دیکھو گے کہ تمہارے ساتھ جس کی عداوت پڑی ہوئی تھی وہ جگری دوست بن گیا ہے
