English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved, said, ‘He is only a man like yourselves; he seeks to make himself superior to you. And if Allah had so willed, He could have surely sent down angels with him. We have never heard of such a thing among our forefathers.

پس ان سرداروں نے جنہوں نے اس کی قوم میں سے کفر کیا، کہا یہ تو تمہاری طرح کے ایک بشر کے سوا کچھ نہیں۔ یہ چاہتا ہے کہ تم پر اپنی فضیلت قائم کرے۔ اور اگر اللہ چاہتا تو فرشتے اتار دیتا۔ ہم نے تو اپنے گزشتہ آباءو اجداد کے تعلق میں ایسا نہیں سنا۔

French

Et les chefs de son peuple, qui avaient refusé de croire, dirent : « Il n’est qu’un homme comme vous ; il voudrait se rendre supérieur à vous. Et si Allāh l’avait voulu, Il aurait assurément pu faire descendre des anges. Nous n’avons jamais entendu une telle chose parmi nos aïeux.

Aber die Häupter seines Volks, die ungläubig waren, sprachen: "Er ist nur ein Mensch wie ihr; er möchte sich bloß über euch erheben. Hätte Allah gewollt, Er hätte doch gewiss Engel hinabsenden können. Wir haben nie von solchem unter unseren Vorvätern gehört.

Mas los jefes de su pueblo que no creían, dijeron: “No es más que un hombre como vosotros; intenta hacerse superior a vosotros. Y si Al-lah lo hubiese querido, en verdad habría enviado ángeles. Nunca oímos tal cosa entre nuestros antepasados”;

اس پر اس کی قوم کے کافروں کے سرداروں نے کہا یہ شخص تو فقط تمہارے جیسا ایک انسان ہے (اور) چاہتا ہے کہ تم پر فضیلت اختیار کرے اگر اللہ (پیغمبر بھیجنا) چاہتا تو فرشتوں کو اتارتا۔ ہم نے اپنے پہلے باپ دادوں میں تو کوئی اس قسم کا واقعہ ہوتا سنا نہیں۔

[d]And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved, said, ‘He is only a mortal like yourselves;[1992] he seeks to gain superiority over you. And if Allah had so willed, [a]He could have, surely, sent down angels with him. We have never heard of such a thing among our forefathers;

The disbelievers suffer from a superiority complex and therefore reject Divine Messengers on the plea that they cannot accept the lead of one who is 'only a mortal like themselves.' The verse incidentally implies that belief in the existence of angels was entertained from time immemorial. As far back as Noah’s time his opponents wanted to see angels descending on them.

Commentary:

The disbelievers have always suffered from a superiority complex and therefore have always rejected Divine Messengers on the plea that they cannot accept the lead of one who is "only a man like ourselves."

The verse incidentally implies that belief in the existence of angels was entertained from time immemorial. As far back as Noah’s time his opponents wanted to see angels descending on them. See also 11:28.

اس کی قوم کے جن سرداروں نے ماننے سے انکار کیا وہ کہنے لگے کہ "یہ شخص کچھ نہیں ہے مگر ایک بشر تم ہی جیسا اِس کی غرض یہ ہے کہ تم پر برتری حاصل کرے اللہ کو اگر بھیجنا ہوتا تو فرشتے بھیجتا یہ بات تو ہم نے کبھی اپنے باپ دادا کے وقتوں میں سنی ہی نہیں (کہ بشر رسول بن کر آئے)

English - Sahih

But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.

سواس کی قوم کے کافر سرداروں نے کہا کہ یہ بس تم ہی جیسا آدمی ہے تم پر بڑائی حاصل کرنا چاہتا ہے اور اگر الله چاہتا تو فرشتے بھیج دیتا ہم نے اپنے پہلے باب دادا سے یہ بات کبھی نہیں سنی

But said the chiefs (of) those who disbelieved among his people, "This is not but a man like you, he wishes to assert (his) superiority over you, and if Allah had willed surely He (would have) sent down Angels. Not we heard of this from our forefathers.

Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to gain superiority over you. And if God willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among, our fathers, the ancients.

قَالَتْ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ إِنِّىٓ أُلْقِىَ إِلَىَّ كِتَٰبٌ كَرِيمٌ

The Queen said, “Ye chiefs, there has been delivered to me a noble letter.

Elle dit : « Ô chefs, conseillez-moi dans l’affaire devant moi. Je ne décide jamais une affaire tant que vous n’êtes pas présents avec moi pour me conseiller. »

(اس کے بعد) اس نے (اپنے درباریوں سے مخاطب ہو کر) کہا۔ اے درباریو! تم میں سے کون اس کے تخت کو میرے پاس لے آئے گا پیشتر اس کے کہ وہ (لوگ) فرمانبردار ہو کر میری خدمت میں حاضر ہوں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

He said, ‘O nobles, which of you will bring me her throne[2171] before they come to me submitting?’

The expression, bi-‘Arshiha, seems to signify the throne which Solomon had ordered to be built for the Queen. It seemed to be a practice in vogue at that time that when the ruler of a State paid a visit to another ruler, a throne was built for the reception of the royal guest. Solomon also ordered a throne to be built for the reception of the Queen. It is called 'her throne' because it was specially built for her use. The expression may also mean, 'the like of her throne,' and Ya’tini, may mean, 'will prepare for me.'

Commentary:

عرشھا (a throne for her) signifies the throne which Solomon had ordered to be built for the Queen in accordance with the custom of the day. It seemed to be a practice in vogue at that time that when the ruler of a State paid a visit to another ruler, a throne was built for the reception of the royal guest. Solomon also ordered a throne to be built for the reception of the Queen. It is called 'her throne' because it was specially built for her use.

The expression یأتینی (will bring me) means, will prepare for me.

سلیمانؑ نے کہا "“اے اہل دربار، تم میں سے کون اس کا تخت میرے پاس لاتا ہے قبل اس کے کہ وہ لوگ مطیع ہو کر میرے پاس حاضر ہوں؟"

[Solomon] said, "O assembly [of jinn], which of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"
