English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
“And when it was said, ‘The promise of Allah is certainly true, and as to the Hour, there is no doubt about its coming,’ you said, ‘We know not what the Hour is; we think it to be nothing but a conjecture, and we are not convinced.’ ”

اور جب کہا جاتا ہے یقیناً اللہ کا وعدہ سچا ہے اور ساعت میں کوئی شک نہیں تو تم کہتے ہو کہ ہم نہیں جانتے کہ ساعت کیا چیز ہے۔ ہم ایک ظن سے بڑھ کر گمان نہیں کرتے اور ہم ہرگز یقین لانے والے نہیں۔

Et lorsqu’il vous a été dit : « La promesse d’Allāh est certainement vraie, et quant à l’Heure, il n’y a pas de doute concernant sa venue, » vous avez dit : « Nous ne savons pas ce qu’est l’Heure ; nous pensons que ce n’est qu’une conjecture, et nous n’ en sommes pas convaincus ! »

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اور جب ان سے یہ کہا جاتا ہے کہ اللہ کا وعدہ تو سچا ہے اور (دنیا کی) آخری تباہی ضرور آنے والی ہے۔ اس میں کوئی شک نہیں تو اس پر[1] وہ کہہ دیتے ہیں کہ ہم نہیں جانتے قیامت کیا چیز ہے؟ ہمیں تو اس کے متعلق صرف گمان سا ہے اور ہمیں اس پر یقین کوئی نہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation
“And when it was said to you, ‘The promise of Allah is certainly true, and [d]as to the Hour, there is no doubt about its coming,’ you said, ‘We know not what the Hour is; we think it to be nothing but a conjecture, and we have no certainty concerning it.”
18:22; 20:16; 22:8.

And when it was said to you, ‘The promise of Allah is certainly true, and [a]as to the Hour, there is no doubt about its coming,’ you said, ‘We know not what the Hour is; we think it to be nothing but a conjecture, and we have no certainty concerning it.’”[3753]

Commentary:
This verse further makes it clear that the "Hour" mentioned in this and the preceding verse refers also to the hour of the complete defeat and discomfiture of disbelievers in this life.
اردو ترجمہ مودودی
اور جب کہا جاتا تھا کہ اللہ کا وعدہ برحق ہے اور قیامت کے آنے میں کوئی شک نہیں، تو تم کہتے تھے کہ ہم نہیں جانتے قیامت کیا ہوتی ہے، ہم تو بس ایک گمان سا رکھتے ہیں، یقین ہم کو نہیں ہے"

And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' "

اور ہم نہیں جانتے کہ اس آنے والے کے ذریعہ سے زمین میں بسنے والے لوگوں کے لئے کسی عذاب کا فیصلہ کیا گیا ہے یا ان کے لئے ان کے رب نے ہدایت دینے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے۔

‘And we know not whether evil is intended for those who are in the earth, or whether their Lord intends to bestow guidance upon them,

And we know not whether evil is intended for those who are in the earth or whether their Lord intends guidance for them.[4404]
Commentary:
Whereas before the appearance of a Divine Reformer, soothsayers and diviners ply their evil trade of prying into the unknown with impunity, with the appearance of such a one they practically confess their lack of knowledge of the unseen by giving up their evil practices. It is not given to these people to foretell what great changes in the world are decreed to take place. On the other hand, only God’s great Messengers can foretell the future.

اور یہ کہ "ہماری سمجھ میں نہ آتا تھا کہ آیا زمین والوں کے ساتھ کوئی برا معاملہ کرنے کا ارادہ کیا گیا ہے یا اُن کا رب اُنہیں راہ راست دکھانا چاہتا ہے"

And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
