قُل لَّوْ كَانَ ٱلْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّى لَنَفِدَ ٱلْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَٰتُ رَبِّى وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِۦ مَدَدًا

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Say, ‘If the ocean became ink for the words of my Lord, surely, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord came to an end, even though We brought the like thereof as further help.’

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

کہہ دے کہ اگر سمندر میرے ربّ کے کلمات کے لئے روشنائی بن جائیں تو سمندر ضرور ختم ہو جائیں گے پیشتر اس کے کہ میرے ربّ کے کلمات ختم ہوں خواہ ہم بطور مدد اس جیسے اور (سمندر) لے آئیں۔

Dis : « Si l’océan devenait de l’encre pour les paroles de mon Seigneur, assurément l’océan serait épuisé avant que les paroles de mon Seigneur prissent fin, même si Nous en apportions encore autant comme aide. »

German

Sprich: "Wäre das Meer Tinte für die Worte meines Herrn, wahrlich, das Meer würde versiegen, ehe die Worte meines Herrn zu Ende gingen, auch wenn Wir noch ein gleiches zur Hilfe brächten."

你 (对他们) 说: [a]假使海水成为 (写) 我养主言语的墨水, 即使我把海水再加一倍, 那么, 还是在我养主的言语尚未完结之前海水就将完结。[790]

31:28.

西方基督教国家吹嘘他们的伟大发明和科学发现。他们看来在那种错误的想法下工作, 认为他们已经成功地探索出创造物本身的奥秘。这只是一种空口说大话而已。安拉的奥秘是如此地无穷无尽和深不可测, 以致那些人们竭尽全力所已经发现的以及今后将要发现的事物还不到沧海一粟。

Di': «Anche se l'oceano diventasse inchiostro per scrivere le parole del mio Signore, invero si esaurirebbe l'oceano prima che si esauriscano le parole del mio Signore, anche se noi ricorressimo a qualcosa di simile ad esso come ulteriore aiuto.»

Diles: “Si el Océano se convirtiera en tinta para las palabras de mi Señor, en verdad que el Océano se agotaría antes de que se terminaran las palabras de mi Señor, aunque trajéramos otro tanto como ayuda suplementaria”.

تو انہیں کہہ (کہ) اگر (ہرایک) سمندر میرے رب کی باتوں (کے لکھنے) کے لئے روشنائی بن جاتا تو میرے رب کی باتوں کے ختم ہونے سے پہلے (ہر ایک) سمندر (کا پانی) ختم ہو جاتا گو (اسے) زیادہ کرنے کے لئے ہم اتنا (ہی) اور (پانی سمندر میں) لا ڈالتے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Say, [a]‘If every ocean became ink for the words of my Lord, surely, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even though We brought the like thereof as further help.’[1736]

31:28.

Christian nations of the West boast of their great inventions and scientific discoveries and seem to labour under the misconception that they have succeeded in fathoming the secrets of creation itself. This is but a vain boast. God’s secrets are so inexhaustible and unfathomable that what these people have discovered and what they will discover hereafter by all their strivings will not be even like a drop in the ocean.

Say, [b]‘If the ocean became ink for the words of my Lord, surely, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord came to an end, even though We brought the like thereof as further help.’[2144]

31:28.

Commentary:

Christian nations of the west boast of their great inventions and scientific discoveries and seem to labour under the misconception that they have succeeded in fathoming the secret of creation itself. But, says the verse, this is nothing but a vain boast. God’s secrets are so inexhaustible and He has endowed His creatures with such wonderful powers and attributes that far from fathoming the secret of creation, what these people will be able to discover after all their striving will not be even as much as a drop in the ocean.

The verse also hints that those will be the days of publicity and innumerable books on all sorts of subjects will be published but even then the vast ocean of knowledge will remain unfathomed.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اے محمدؐ، کہو کہ اگر سمندر میرے رب کی باتیں لکھنے کے لیے روشنائی بن جائے تو وہ ختم ہو جائے مگر میرے رب کی باتیں ختم نہ ہوں، بلکہ اتنی ہی روشنائی ہم اور لے آئیں تو وہ بھی کفایت نہ کرے

English - Sahih

Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement."

کہہ دو اگر میرے رب کی باتیں لکھنےکے لئے سمندر سیاہی بن جائے تو میرے رب کی باتیں ختم ہونے سے پہلے سمندر ختم ہو جائے اور اگرچہ اس کی مدد کے لیے ہم ایسا ہی اور سمندر لائیں

Say, "If were the sea ink, for (the) Words (of) my Lord, surely (would be) exhausted the sea before [that] (were) exhausted (the) Words (of) my Lord, even if We brought (the) like (of) it (as) a supplement."

Say:. 'If the sea were ink for the Words of my Lord, the sea would be spent before the Words of my Lord are spent, though We brought replenishment the like of it.'

English - Maududi

Say: "If the sea were to become ink to record the Words of my Lord, indeed the sea would be all used up before the Words of my Lord are exhausted, and it would be the same even if We were to bring an equal amount of ink."

Say: "If the ocean turned to ink for writing down the colloquy of my Lord, the ocean itself would be exhausted ere the words (and wonders) of my Lord come to end, even if we brought another like it for replenishment."

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور زمین میں جتنے درخت ہیں اگر سب قلمیں بن جائیں اور سمندر (روشنائی ہوجائے اور) اس کے علاوہ سات سمندر بھی اس کی مدد کریں تب بھی اللہ کے کلمات ختم نہیں ہوں گے۔ یقیناً اللہ کامل غلبہ والا (اور) صاحبِ حکمت ہے۔

Et si tous les arbres qui se trouvent sur la terre étaient des plumes, et l’océan était de l’encre, renforcé de sept autres océans par la suite, les paroles d’Allāh ne seraient pas épuisées. Assurément, Allāh est Puissant, Sage.

Und wenn alle Bäume, die auf der Erde sind, Federn wären, und der Ozean (Tinte), und sieben Ozeane würden nachträglich ihm zugefügt, selbst dann könnten Allahs Zeichen nicht erschöpft werden. Wahrlich, Allah ist allmächtig, allweise.

Si todos los árboles que hay en la tierra fuesen plumas; y el mar, con la ayuda de otros siete mares fuese tinta, no podrían agotarse las palabras de Al‑lah. En verdad,

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور اگر زمین میں جتنے درخت ہیں ان کی قلمیں بن جائیں اور سمندر سیاہی سے بھرا ہوا ہو۔ اس طرح کہ سات اور سیاہی کے سمندر اس میں ملا دئے جائیں تو بھی اللہ کے نشان[1] ختم نہیں ہوں گے۔ اللہ یقیناً غالب (اور) بڑی حکمتوں والا ہے۔

کَلِمَۃٌ بمعنے آیت ہے۔

18:110.

Numbers "7" and "70" are used in Arabic to denote a large number, and not exactly "seven" and "seventy" as ordinary numerals.

Commentary:

Overawed by the vastness of the size of an object of nature or the extraordinary powers of a human being, men of low intellect and weak faith are prone to ascribe Divine attributes to them. It is the untenability of this position that the verse under comment seeks to expose. It purports to say that disbelievers are overawed into attributing Divine powers to a big object of nature, or a great man, while the great universe of which God is the sole Architect is an inexhaustible storehouse of unfathomable mysteries, infinitely larger in number than the wonderful things that meet the eye. So it is absurd on the part of disbelievers to take an object of nature or a human being as God on the score of his or its being seemingly extraordinary.

It may also be noted that numbers "7" and "70" are used in Arabic to denote a very large number, and not exactly "seven" and "seventy" as ordinary numerals.

زمین میں جتنے درخت ہیں اگر وہ سب کے سب قلم بن جائیں اور سمندر (دوات بن جائے) جسے سات مزید سمندر روشنائی مہیا کریں تب بھی اللہ کی باتیں (لکھنے سے) ختم نہ ہوں گی بے شک اللہ زبردست اور حکیم ہے

اوراگروہ جو زمین میں درخت ہیں سب قلم ہوجائیں گے اور دریا سیاہی اس کے بعد اس دریا میں سات اور دریا سیاہی کے آ ملیں تو بھی الله کی باتیں ختم نہ ہوں بے شک الله زبردست حکمت والا ہے
