Thou mayest defer the marriage of any of them that thou pleasest, and receive unto thyself whom thou pleasest; and if thou desirest to take back any of those whom thou hast put aside, there is no blame on thee. That is more likely that their eyes may be cooled, and that they may not grieve, and that they may all be pleased with that which thou hast given them. And Allah knows what is in your hearts; and Allah is All-Knowing, Forbearing.

تُو اُن میں سے جنہیں چاہے چھوڑ دے اور جنہیں چاہے اپنے پاس رکھ۔ اور جنہیں تُو چھوڑ چکا ہے ان میں سے کسی کو اگر پھر (لینا) چاہے تو تجھ پر کوئی گناہ نہیں۔ یہ اس بات کے زیادہ قریب ہے کہ ان کی آنکھیں ٹھنڈی ہوں اور وہ غم میں مبتلا نہ رہیں اور وہ سب اس پر راضی ہو جائیں جو تُو انہیں دے۔ اور اللہ جانتا ہے جو تمہارے دلوں میں ہے اور اللہ دائمی علم رکھنے والا (اور) بہت بُردبار ہے۔

French

Tu peux reporter ton mariage avec n’importe laquelle d’entre elles que tu voudras, et retenir auprès de toi celle que tu voudras ; et si tu désires reprendre n’importe laquelle de celles dont tu te seras séparé, il n’y a aucun blâme sur toi. Ainsi, il est plus probable que leurs yeux seront apaisés et qu’elles ne se désoleront pas et qu’elles seront toutes satisfaites avec ce que tu leur as donné. Et Allāh sait ce qui est dans votre cœur ; et Allāh est Omniscient, Indulgent.

German

Du darfst die unter ihnen hinhalten*, die du wünschest, und du darfst die zu dir nehmen, die du wünschest; und wenn du eine, die du entlassen, wieder nehmen willst, dann trifft dich kein Vorwurf. Das ist dazu angetan, dass ihre Augen gekühlt werden und dass sie sich nicht grämen und dass sie alle zufrieden sein mögen mit dem, was du ihnen zu geben hast. Allah weiß, was in euren Herzen ist, denn Allah ist allwissend, langmütig.

你可随自己的意愿把她们任何人放在一边, 可随自已的意愿把他们任何人留在你那里; 也可以接回你与她们分居的任何人, 这对于你没有任何罪过。这是更能促使她们感到欣慰而不悲伤, 并且都满意于你所给予[1036]她们的。安拉知道你们心中的 (每一件事情)。安拉是全知的, 宽容的。

Italian

Tu puoi rimandare il matrimonio con quella che vuoi tra di loro, e far venire da te quella che tu vuoi; e se desideri far tornare da te qualcuna tra quelle che avevi lasciato in disparte, non ne sarai rimproverato. In questo modo è più probabile che i loro occhi siano rinfrescati e che non si affliggano e che siano tutte contente di quanto hai dato loro. E Allah conosce quello che c'è nei vostri cuori. E Allah è Onnisciente, Indulgente.

Spanish

Puedes diferir casarte con cualquiera de entre ellas si lo deseas, y recibir a quien te agrade; y si deseas tomar de nuevo a alguna de las que hayas dejado a un lado, no tendrás culpa alguna. Eso será lo más adecuado para que sus ojos se consuelen, para que no sufran aflicción y todas se contenten con lo que tú les hayas dado. Pues Al‑lah sabe lo que hay en vuestros corazones; y Al‑lah es Omnisciente, Tolerante.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

تو ان (بیویوں) میں سے جس کو چاہے الگ[1] کر دے اور جس کو چاہے اپنے پاس رکھ لے اور ان عورتوں میں سے جن کو تو نے الگ کر دیا ہے کسی کو اپنے پاس لے آئے تو تجھ پر کوئی گناہ نہیں۔ یہ امر اس بات کے بہت زیادہ قریب ہے کہ ان کی آنکھیں ٹھنڈی ہوں اور وہ غم نہ کریں اور جو کچھ تو نے ان کو دیا[2] ہے اس پر سب کی سب راضی ہو جائیں اور اللہ تمہارے دلوں کی ہر بات کو جانتا ہے اور وہ بہت جاننے والا (اور) بہت سمجھ بوجھ سے کام لینے والا ہے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Thou mayest put aside any of them that thou pleasest, and keep with thyself whom thou pleasest; and if thou desirest to take back any of those whom thou hast put aside, there is no blame on thee. That is more likely that their eyes may be cooled, and that they may not grieve, and that they may all be pleased with that which thou hast given[2363] them. And Allah knows what is in your hearts; and Allah is All-Knowing, Forbearing.

تم کو اختیار دیا جاتا ہے کہ اپنی بیویوں میں سے جس کو چاہو اپنے سے الگ رکھو، جسے چاہو اپنے ساتھ رکھو اور جسے چاہو الگ رکھنے کے بعد اپنے پاس بلا لو اس معاملہ میں تم پر کوئی مضائقہ نہیں ہے اِس طرح زیادہ متوقع ہے کہ اُن کی آنکھیں ٹھنڈی رہیں گی اور وہ رنجیدہ نہ ہوں گی، اور جو کچھ بھی تم اُن کو دو گے اس پر وہ سب راضی رہیں گی اللہ جانتا ہے جو کچھ تم لوگوں کے دلوں میں ہے، اور اللہ علیم و حلیم ہے

English - Sahih

You, [O Muhammad], may put aside whom you will of them or take to yourself whom you will. And any that you desire of those [wives] from whom you had [temporarily] separated - there is no blame upon you [in returning her]. That is more suitable that they should be content and not grieve and that they should be satisfied with what you have given them - all of them. And Allah knows what is in your hearts. And ever is Allah Knowing and Forbearing.

آپ ان میں سے جسے چاہیں چھوڑ دیں اور جسے چاہیں اپنے پاس جگہ دیں اور ان میں سے جسے آپ چاہیں جنہیں آپ نے علیحدہ کر دیا تھا تو آپ پر کوئی گناہ نہیں یہ اس سے زیادہ قریب ہے کہ ان کی آنکھیں ٹھنڈی ہوں اور غمزدہ نہ ہو اور ان سب کو جو آپ دیں اس پر راضی ہوں اور جو کچھ تمہارے دلوں میں ہے الله جانتا ہے اورالله جاننے والا بردبار ہے

You may defer whom you will of them or you may take to yourself whom you will. And whoever you desire of those whom you (had) set aside - then (there is) no blame upon you. 一方面, 穆圣的妻子们可以在他的伴侣与生活及财产上的物质享受之间进行随意选择 (33:29-30), 而另一方面, 穆圣也可以留住或离开他的任何一个妻子。他的所有妻子们马上表明了她们的选择。她们决定与他共命运。而就穆圣方面, 则同样地显得十分体贴。他表示了把她们全都留住的打算。穆圣的这一决定使得她们非常高兴。这就是: “都满意于你所给予她们的” 这句话的含意。

اردہ تفصیرِ صغیر نوٹس ^*

اس آیت اور پہلی آیت میں یہ فرق ہے کہ سورہ ٔاحزاب کی آیت۲۹ میں تو یہ کہا گیا تھا کہ اے بیویو! اگر تمہارے دل میں دنیا کی فراخی دین کی فراخی پر مقدم ہو تو تم کہہ دو۔ میں تم کو دنیا کی فراخی دے کر رخصت کر دوں گا۔ مگر اس آیت میں یہ کہا گیا ہے کہ عورتوں نے تو فیصلہ دے دیا کہ وہ چپ رہیں اور اس طرح انہوں نے عملًا کہہ دیا کہ ہم دین پر راضی ہیں دنیا پر نہیں۔ لیکن میاں بیوی کے تعلقات کا ایک پہلو اور بھی ہوتا ہے یعنی عورت خواہ سمجھتی ہو کہ میں دین دار ہوں مگر مرد بعض باتیں اس میں ایسی دیکھتا ہے جن سے وہ اسے دنیا دار سمجھتا ہے۔ پس اس کو بھی حق ہونا چاہیے کہ اگر وہ سمجھے کہ اصل میں وہ دنی

یعنی بیویاں رسول کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے حسن اخلاق سے واقف تھیں جب معاملہ خداتعالیٰ نے آپ پر چھوڑا تو وہ خوش ہو گئیں کہ اب جو کچھ ہوگا ٹھیک ہوگا

قرآن کریم میں بہت جگہ ’’دیا ہے‘‘ ’’دے گا‘‘ کے معنوں میں استعمال ہوا ہے اور مطلب یہ ہے کہ آئندہ جو سلوک بھی تو اُن سے کرے گا اس حکم کے ماتحت وہ اس پر خوش ہو جائیں گی اور سمجھ لیں گی کہ تو محبت اور انصاف کا سلوک کر رہا ہے۔

English - Arberry

Thou mayest put off whom thou wilt of them, and whom thou wilt thou mayest take to thee; and if thou seekest any thou hast set aside there is no fault in thee. So it is likelier they will be comforted, and not sorrow, and every one of them will be well-pleased with what thou givest her. God knows what is in your hearts; God is All-knowing, All-clement.

Of them you may put off any of them you wish, and you may take any of them whom you wish, and you may call back any of those whom you had (temporarily) set aside: there will be no blame on you (on this account). It is likelier that they will thus be comforted, and will not grieve, and every one of them will be well-pleased with what you give them. Allah knows what is in your hearts. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Forbearing.

You may defer the turn of any of your wives you like, and may take any other you desire. There is no harm if you take any of those (whose turn) you had deferred. This would be better as it would gladden their hearts and they will not grieve, and each will be happy with what you have given her. God knows what is in your heart, for He is all-wise and benign.

English - Yusuf Ali

Thou mayest defer (the turn of) any of them that thou pleasest, and thou mayest receive any thou pleasest: and there is no blame on thee if thou invite one whose (turn) thou hadst set aside. This were nigher to the cooling of their eyes, the prevention of their grief, and their satisfaction - that of all of them - with that which thou hast to give them: and Allah knows (all) that is in your hearts: and Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

Important Words:

ترجی (thou mayest defer) is derived from رجأ. They say أرجأ الامر i.e. he postponed, put off, deferred or delayed an affair. The Quranic expression, مرجون لامر الله (9:107) means, those about whom decision has been deferred for the decree of Allah (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

Whereas on the one hand the wives of the Holy Prophet were given the option to choose between his company and the material comforts of life and worldly goods (33:29-30), on the other the Holy Prophet was also given the same choice to retain, or part with, any of his wives. All his wives lost no time in indicating their preference. They chose to cast in their lot with the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet, on his part, was equally considerate. He signified his intention to retain all of them. This decision of the Prophet greatly pleased them. This is the meaning of the words: That they may all be pleased with that which thou hast given them.

The present and the previous verse contain permissive regulations for the Holy Prophet, but the Prophet did not take advantage of any one of them, nor did he put aside or divorce any of his wives.
