He it is Who enables you to journey through land and sea until, when you are on board the ships and they sail with them with a fair breeze and they rejoice in it, there overtakes them (the ships) a violent wind and the waves come on them from every side and they think they are encompassed, then they call upon Allah, purifying their religion for Him, saying, ‘If Thou deliver us from this, we will surely be of the thankful.’

وہی ہے جو تمہیں خشکی پر بھی چلاتا ہے اور تری میں بھی یہاں تک کہ جب تم کشتیوں میں ہوتے ہو اور وہ خوشگوار ہواؤں کی مدد سے اُنہیں لئے ہوئے چلتی ہیں اور وہ اس سے بہت خوش ہوتے ہیں تو اچانک سخت تیز ہوا انہیں آ لیتی ہے اور موج ہر طرف سے اُن کی طرف بڑھتی ہے اور وہ گمان کرنے لگتے ہیں کہ وہ گھیر لئے گئے ہیں، تب وہ اللہ کو پکارتے ہیں دین کو اُسی کے لئے خالص کرتے ہوئے کہ اگر تو ہمیں اس سے نجات دےدے تو یقیناً ہم شکر گزاروں میں سے ہوجائیں گے۔

C’est Lui Qui vous permet de voyager sur terre et sur mer, jusqu’au moment où, lorsque vous êtes à bord des navires et qu’ils voguent avec eux, poussés par une brise favorable et qu’ils s’en réjouissent, un vent féroce les surprend ; et les vagues déferlent sur eux de tous côtés et ils croient qu’ils sont cernés par une mort certaine, alors ils en appellent à Allāh, promettant d’être sincères dans leur foi en Lui en disant : « Si Tu nous sauves de ceci, nous serons certainement parmi les reconnaissants. »

Er ist es, Der euch instand setzt, über Land und Meer zu reisen, bis endlich, wenn ihr an (Bord) der Schiffe seid – und sie mit ihnen dahinsegeln mit gutem Wind und sie freuen sich dessen, da erfasst sie plötzlich ein Sturm, und die Wogen kommen über sie von allen Seiten, und sie meinen schon, sie seien rings umschlossen – dann rufen sie zu Allah in lauterem Gehorsam gegen Ihn: "Wenn Du uns aus diesem errettest, so werden wir sicherlich unter den Dankbaren sein."

Egli è Colui che vi mette in grado di viaggiare per terra e per mare, fino a quando vi trovate a bordo di navi, e queste veleggiano con essi spinte da una piacevole brezza, e se ne rallegrano; ma ecco sopraggiunge un vento impetuoso, con onde che li investono da ogni parte; allora essi, pensando di venirne circondati, invocano Allah promettendo la sincerità della loro fede in Lui, dicendo: «Se Tu ci salvi da questo, saremo certamente tra coloro che sono riconoscenti.»

Él es Quien os permite viajar por tierra y por mar hasta que, cuando estáis a bordo de los buques y éstos navegan con una brisa agradable y se alegran con ella entonces les alcanza un viento tempestuoso las olas caen sobre ellos de todas partes y piensan haber sido rodeados, entonces invocan a Al-lah, prometiendo la sinceridad de su fe en Él, diciendo: “Si nos libras de esto, ciertamente seremos de los agradecidos”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

وہ (خدائے کریم) ہی ہے جو تمہیں (توفیق دیکر) خشکی اور تری میں چلاتا ہے۔ یہاں تک کہ جب تم لوگ کشتیوں میں (سوار) ہوتے ہو اور وہ عمدہ ہوا کے ذریعہ سے ان[1] (لوگوں) کو بھی لیکر چل رہی ہوتی ہیں اور وہ ان[2] پر اِترا رہے ہوتے ہیں تو ان پر ایک (تندو) تیز ہوا آجاتی ہے اور ہر طرف سے موج (پر موج) ان پر (چڑھ) آتی ہے اور[3] وہ سمجھنے لگتے ہیں کہ (اب) وہ ہلاکت (کے منہ) میں آگئے ہیں تو (ایسے وقت میں) وہ (اپنی) اطاعت کو خدا کے لئے خالص کرتے ہوئے اس کو پکارتے ہیں (اور کہتے ہیں کہ اے اللہ)! اگر تو نے ہمیں اس (مصیبت) سے نجات دی تو ہم ضرور ہی (تیرے) شکر گذاروں (کے زمرہ) میں (داخل) ہو جائیں گے۔

It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assume that they are surrounded, supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful."

Important Words:

عاصف (violent) is the active participle from عصف. They say عصفت الریح i.e. the wind blew violently or vehemently. عصفت الناقة براکبھا means, the she-camel went quickly with her rider, as if she were the wind. عصف الدھربھم means, the time destroyed them. عصف الزرع means, he cut the corn before its attaining maturity. ریح عاصف means, wind blowing violently or vehemently. یوم عاصف means, a day violent in respect of wind and storm (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The verse purports to say that on the part of God the system of punishing and showing mercy goes hand in hand, as does on the part of disbelievers the habit of acting wickedly in time of ease and repenting temporarily when punishment overtakes them. But disbelievers always ignore the fact that, just as a pleasant breeze sometimes develops into a violent gale and causes widespread destruction, similarly, the remission that is granted to them may prove the prelude to their destruction. To bring home to disbelievers this patent truth, their attention is drawn to the comforts and perils of a sea-voyage.

It is worthy of note that whereas the verse uses the pronoun "you" in the second person in the first two clauses, it suddenly changes to a pronoun of the third person (them, they) in the third and the following clauses. This is not without purpose. The first two clauses referred to both believers and disbelievers, for it is both for believers and disbelievers that God has provided the means of travel by land and sea. Hence the pronoun "you" has been used in the first two clauses. But as in the following clauses it has been pointed out that a section of the people become ungrateful, therefore here the second person has been changed into the third person, in order to show that it is only disbelievers that become ungrateful.

As a pleasant breeze sometimes develops into a violent gale and causes widespread destruction, similarly, the respite that is granted to disbelievers may prove the prelude to their destruction. To bring home to disbelievers this patent truth, their attention is drawn to the comforts and perils of a sea-voyage.
