Surely, if those who disbelieve had all that is in the earth and as much over again, to ransom themselves therewith from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them; and they shall have a painful punishment.

Assurément si ceux qui ne croient pas possédaient tout ce qui se trouve sur la terre, et autant encore, pour se racheter du châtiment du Jour de la Résurrection, cela ne serait pas accepté d’eux ; et ils auront un châtiment douloureux.

جو لوگ کافر ہیں اگر زمین میں جو کچھ (بھی پایا جاتا) ہے (وہ) سب اور اتنا (ہی) اس کے ساتھ (اور مال بھی) ان کے پاس ہوتا تاکہ وہ قیامت کے دن کے عذاب کے بدلہ میں اسے دے دیتے تو بھی وہ ان کی طرف سے قبول نہ کیا جاتا اور ان کے لئے دردناک عذاب (مقدر) ہے۔

Pour ceux qui obéissent à leur Seigneur est le bien éternel ; et quant à ceux qui ne Lui répondent pas, s’ils avaient tout ce qui est sur la terre et encore une fois autant, ils se rançonneraient volontiers. Ceux-là auront un mauvais règlement de compte, et leur habitation sera l’Enfer. Quel misérable lieu de repos !

Important Words:
الحسنی (eternal good) being the feminine of الاحسن means, that which is better; or that which is best; victory; the good, final or ultimate state or condition ordained for the Faithful; Paradise; the view or vision of God (Lane). See also 10:27.
Commentary:
The verse says that those who accept the Message of God will finally achieve success and victory and will meet their Lord. Their intellectual powers will become sharpened. On the contrary, those who reject it will decline materially and morally till failure and ruin encompass them and no ransom will save them from the punishment of God.
The expression, that shall have an evil reckoning, means that the actions of disbelievers will result not to their liking. They will not be able to render a good account of the faculties with which God had endowed them to make spiritual progress but which they abused.

Commentary:
The expression "Day of Resurrection" in the verse may apply both to the last Judgement Day and the day of the final triumph of Islam. That great event took place before the very eyes of disbelievers, when idolatry departed from Arabia never to return. The disbelievers could never conceive of such an event taking place. This may be the significance of the words, but there shall appear unto them from Allah that which they never thought. Or the words may mean that evil consequences of the evil deeds which disbelievers did in this life will appear before them in an embodied form in the life to come, and of that eventuality they had no idea.
