English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved, said, ‘He is only a man like yourselves; he seeks to make himself superior to you. And if Allah had so willed, He could have surely sent down angels with him. We have never heard of such a thing among our forefathers.

پس ان سرداروں نے جنہوں نے اس کی قوم میں سے کفر کیا، کہا یہ تو تمہاری طرح کے ایک بشر کے سوا کچھ نہیں۔ یہ چاہتا ہے کہ تم پر اپنی فضیلت قائم کرے۔ اور اگر اللہ چاہتا تو فرشتے اتار دیتا۔ ہم نے تو اپنے گزشتہ آباءو اجداد کے تعلق میں ایسا نہیں سنا۔

Et les chefs de son peuple, qui avaient refusé de croire, dirent : « Il n’est qu’un homme comme vous ; il voudrait se rendre supérieur à vous. Et si Allāh l’avait voulu, Il aurait assurément pu faire descendre des anges. Nous n’avons jamais entendu une telle chose parmi nos aïeux.

اس پر اس کی قوم کے کافروں کے سرداروں نے کہا یہ شخص تو فقط تمہارے جیسا ایک انسان ہے (اور) چاہتا ہے کہ تم پر فضیلت اختیار کرے اگر اللہ (پیغمبر بھیجنا) چاہتا تو فرشتوں کو اتارتا۔ ہم نے اپنے پہلے باپ دادوں میں تو کوئی اس قسم کا واقعہ ہوتا سنا نہیں۔

The disbelievers have always suffered from a superiority complex and therefore have always rejected Divine Messengers on the plea that they cannot accept the lead of one who is "only a man like ourselves."

اس کی قوم کے جن سرداروں نے ماننے سے انکار کیا وہ کہنے لگے کہ "یہ شخص کچھ نہیں ہے مگر ایک بشر تم ہی جیسا اِس کی غرض یہ ہے کہ تم پر برتری حاصل کرے اللہ کو اگر بھیجنا ہوتا تو فرشتے بھیجتا یہ بات تو ہم نے کبھی اپنے باپ دادا کے وقتوں میں سنی ہی نہیں (کہ بشر رسول بن کر آئے)

But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.

Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to gain superiority over you. And if God willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among, our fathers, the ancients.

But the notables among his people had refused to believe, and said: "This is none other than a mortal like yourselves who desires to attain superiority over you. Had Allah wanted (to send any Messengers) He would have sent down angels. We have heard nothing like this in the time of our forebears of old (that humans were sent as Messengers).

Lorsque leurs Messagers vinrent à eux du début à la fin, leur disant : « Adorez seulement Allāh, » ils dirent : « Si Notre Seigneur l’avait voulu, Il aurait certainement fait descendre des anges. Nous refusons donc de croire en ce avec quoi vous avez été envoyés. »

Così, noi non crediamo in ciò con cui voi siete stati mandati.»

Cuando sus Mensajeros llegaron a ellos por delante y por detrás, diciendo: “No adoréis a nadie sino a Al-lah”, dijeron: Si nuestro Señor así lo hubiese querido, habría enviado ciertamente ángeles. No creemos pues en aquello con lo que has sido enviado”.

یعنی جب اُن کے پاس اُن کے آگے سے بھی اور اُن کے پیچھے سے بھی رسول آئے (یعنی قومی زندگی کے دوران میں متواتر رسول آئے) یہ کہتے ہوئے کہ اللہ کے سوا کسی کی عبادت نہ کرو‘ تو انہوں نے ان کو جواب دیا کہ اگر ہمارا رب چاہتا تو ہم پر خود فرشتے نازل کر دیتا۔ پس ہم اس تعلیم کا جس کے ساتھ تم کو بھیجا گیا ہے انکار کرتے ہیں۔

When their Messengers came to them from before them and from behind them,[2627A] admonishing them, ‘Worship none but Allah,’ they said, ‘If our Lord had so willed, He would, certainly; have sent down angels. So we do disbelieve in that with which you have been sent.’
Divine Messengers continued to appear during the whole span of their national life.

Commentary:
The verse means to say that the Prophets of God used all possible means to make their people accept the Divine Message and also warned them of Divine punishment if they rejected it.

جب خدا کے رسول اُن کے پاس آگے اور پیچھے، ہر طرف سے آئے اور انہیں سمجھایا کہ اللہ کے سوا کسی کی بندگی نہ کرو تو انہوں نے کہا "ہمارا رب چاہتا تو فرشتے بھیجتا، لہٰذا ہم اُس بات کو نہیں مانتے جس کے لیے تم بھیجے گئے ہو"

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

And We have not fixed their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who have been given the Book may attain to certainty, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the Book as well as the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is disease and the disbelievers may say, ‘What does Allah mean by such an illustration?’ Thus does Allah adjudge astray whom He pleases and guide whom He pleases. And none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And this is nothing but a Reminder for man.

اور ہم نے فرشتوں کے سوا کسی کو جہنّم کے داروغے نہیں بنایا اور ہم نے اُن کی تعداد مقرر نہیں کی مگر اُن لوگوں کی آزمائش کی خاطر جنہوں نے کفر کیا تاکہ وہ لوگ جنہیں کتاب دی گئی وہ یقین کرلیں اور وہ لوگ جو ایمان لائے ہیں ایمان میں بڑھ جائیں اور جن کو کتاب دی گئی وہ اور مومن کسی شک میں نہ رہیں اور تا وہ جن کے دلوں میں مرض ہے اور کفار کہیں کہ آخر اللہ کا اس تمثیل سے کیا ارادہ ہے؟ اسی طرح اللہ جسے چاہتا ہے گمراہ ٹھہراتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے اُسے ہدایت دیتا ہے اور تیرے ربّ کے لشکروں کو کوئی نہیں جانتا مگر وہی۔ اور یہ انسان کے لئے ایک بڑی نصیحت کے سوا اور کچھ نہیں۔

Et Nous n’avons désigné personne d’autre que des anges pour être les gardiens du Feu. Et Nous n’avons fixé leur nombre que pour l’épreuve des mécréants, afin que ceux à qui le Livre a été donné puissent atteindre la certitude, et que les croyants puissent augmenter leur foi, et que ceux à qui le Livre a été donné ainsi que les croyants ne doutent pas, et que ceux dans le cœur de qui il y a une maladie, et les mécréants, puissent dire : « Qu’est-ce qu’Allāh entend par cet exemple ? » C’est ainsi qu’Allāh juge égaré qui Il veut, et guide qui Il veut. Et personne ne connaît les armées de ton Seigneur sauf Lui- Même. Et ceci n’est qu’un Rappel pour l’homme.

und Wir haben einzig und allein Engel zu Hütern des Feuers gemacht. Und Wir setzten ihre Anzahl nicht fest, außer zur Prüfung derer, die ungläubig sind, auf dass die, denen das Buch gegeben ward, Gewissheit erreichen, und die, die gläubig sind, an Glauben zunehmen, und die, denen die Schrift gegeben ward, und die Gläubigen nicht zweifeln, und die, in deren Herzen Krankheit ist, und die Ungläubigen sprechen: "Was meint Allah mit diesem Gleichnis?" Also erklärt Allah zum Irrenden, wen Er will, und führt richtig, wen Er will. Keiner kennt die Heerscharen deines Herrn als Er allein. Dies ist nur eine Ermahnung für den Menschen.

Y sólo hemos hecho guardianes del Fuego a los ángeles. No hemos fijado su número sino como prueba para los incrédulos; para que aquellos a quienes se ha dado el Libro, alcancen la certeza; para que los creyentes aumenten en su fe; para que los que han recibido el Libro y también los creyentes no duden y para que los de corazón enfermo y los incrédulos digan: “¿Qué quiere decir Al-lah con este ejemplo?”. Así juzga Al-lah como extraviados a quienes Le place y guía a quienes Le agrada. Pues nadie conoce los ejércitos de tu Señor fuera de Él. Y esto no es más que un Recordatorio para el hombre.

اور دوزخ کے داروغے ہم نے صرف فرشتوں[2] میں سے مقرر کیے ہیں اور ان کی گنتی صرف کافروں کی آزمائش کے طور پر بتائی ہے اور اس کا یہ نتیجہ نکلے گا کہ اہل کتاب کو یقین آجائے گا اور مومن ایمان میں زیادہ ہو جائیں گے اور نہ اہل کتاب شبہ کریں گے اور نہ مومن۔ نتیجہ یہ ہوگا کہ جن کے دلوں میں بیماری ہے وہ اور دوسرے کافر کہیں گے کہ اس بات کے کہنے سے اللہ کا کیا منشا ہے۔ اسی طرح اللہ اسے گمراہ قرار دیتا ہے جس کے متعلق ارادہ کر لیتا ہے اور جس کے متعلق ارادہ کر لیتا ہے اسے ہدایت دے دیتا ہے اور تیرے رب کے لشکروں کو سوائے اس کے کوئی نہیں جانتا۔ اور یہ (قرآن) انسان کے لئے صرف ایک نصیحت ہے۔
اس کا یہ مطلب ہے کہ دوزخ میں رکھنے کا اصل موجب تو فرشتے ہوں گے کیونکہ اتنے لوگوں کو روکنے کی طاقت فرشتوں کو ہی ہے۔ ہاں کبھی کبھی ملائکہ سے اپنی مشابہت بتا کر انسان بھی ان کا کام کرنے لگ جائیں گے۔

Commentary:
The apparently enigmatic "nineteen" may concern some great Divine design or purpose which, when unfolded, will, on the one hand, greatly add to the faith of the believers and, on the other, to the embarrassment and mental confusion of the disbelievers and of "those in whose heart is disease." Otherwise the number of God’s angels is legion, beyond human count or computation, just as the stages of man’s spiritual progress in the Hereafter are number-less.

ہم نے دوزخ کے یہ کارکن فرشتے بنائے ہیں، اور ان کی تعداد کو کافروں کے لیے فتنہ بنا دیا ہے، تاکہ اہل کتاب کو یقین آ جائے اور ایمان لانے والوں کا ایمان بڑھے، اور اہل کتاب اور مومنین کسی شک میں نہ رہیں، اور دل کے بیمار اور کفار یہ کہیں کہ بھلا اللہ کا اِس عجیب بات سے کیا مطلب ہو سکتا ہے اِس طرح اللہ جسے چاہتا ہے گمراہ کر دیتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے ہدایت بخش دیتا ہے اور تیرے رب کے لشکروں کو خود اُس کے سوا کوئی نہیں جانتا اور اس دوزخ کا ذکر اِس کے سوا کسی غرض کے لیے نہیں کیا گیا ہے کہ لوگوں کو اس سے نصیحت ہو
English - Sahih
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.

اور ہم نے دوزخ پر فرشتے ہی رکھے ہیں اور ان کی تعداد کافروں کے لیے آزمائش بنائی ہے تاکہ جن کو کتاب دی گئی ہے وہ یقین کر لیں اور ایمان داروں کا ایمان بڑھے اورتاکہ اہلِ کتاب اور ایمان دار شک نہ کریں اور تاکہ جن کے دلوں میں (نفاق کی) بیماری ہے اورکافر یہ کہیں کہ الله کی اس بیان سے کیاغرض ہے اور الله اس طرح سے جسے چاہتاہے گمراہ کر تا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے ہدایت کرتا ہے اور آپ کے رب کے لشکروں کو اس کے سوا اور کوئی نہیں جانتا اور دوزخ (کا حال بیان کرنا) صرف آدمیوں کی نصیحت کے لیے ہے

And not We have made keepers (of) the Fire except Angels. اس کا یہ مطلب ہے کہ دوزخ میں رکھنے کا اصل موجب تو فرشتے ہوں گے کیونکہ اتنے لوگوں کو روکنے کی طاقت فرشتوں کو ہی ہے۔ ہاں کبھی کبھی ملائکہ سے اپنی مشابہت بتا کر انسان بھی ان کا کام کرنے لگ جائیں گے۔

We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals.

As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. Commentary:
The apparently enigmatic "nineteen" may concern some great Divine design or purpose which, when unfolded, will, on the one hand, greatly add to the faith of the believers and, on the other, to the embarrassment and mental confusion of the disbelievers and of "those in whose heart is disease." Otherwise the number of God’s angels is legion, beyond human count or computation, just as the stages of man’s spiritual progress in the Hereafter are number-less.
