يَسْـَٔلُكَ أَهْلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَن تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ كِتَٰبًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ فَقَدْ سَأَلُوا۟ مُوسَىٰٓ أَكْبَرَ مِن ذَٰلِكَ فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَرِنَا ٱللَّهَ جَهْرَةً فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ بِظُلْمِهِمْ ۚ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ فَعَفَوْنَا عَن ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ سُلْطَٰنًا مُّبِينًا
English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
The People of the Book ask thee to cause a Book to descend on them from heaven. They asked Moses a greater thing than this: they said, ‘Show us Allah openly.’ Then a destructive punishment overtook them because of their transgression. Then they took the calf for worship after clear Signs had come to them, but We pardoned even that. And We gave Moses manifest authority.
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
تجھ سے اہلِ کتاب سوال کرتے ہیں کہ تُو اُن پر آسمان سے (ظاہری صورت میں) کوئی کتاب اتار لائے۔ پس وہ موسیٰ سے اس سے بھی بڑی باتوں کا مطالبہ کر چکے ہیں۔ چنانچہ انہوں نے (اس سے) کہا کہ ہمیں اللہ بے حجاب دکھا دے۔ پس ان کے ظلم کی وجہ سے انہیں آسمانی بجلی نے آ پکڑا۔ پھر انہوں نے بچھڑے کو (معبود کے طور پر) اختیار کرلیا بعد اس کے کہ ان کے پاس کھلی کھلی نشانیاں آچکی تھیں۔ بایں ہمہ ہم نے اس بارہ میں درگزر سے کام لیا اور ہم نے موسیٰ کو روشن حجت عطا کی۔
French
Les Gens du Livre te demandent de faire descendre de façon littérale du ciel sur eux un Livre. Ils demandèrent à Moïse quelque chose de plus grave. Ils lui ont dit : « Fais-nous voir Allāh ouvertement. » Alors un châtiment destructeur les frappa à cause de leur transgression. Ensuite ils prirent le veau en adoration après que des Signes manifestes leur furent parvenus ; mais Nous leur pardonnâmes même cela. Et Nous donnâmes à Moïse des arguments clairs et convaincants.

Das Volk der Schrift* verlangt von dir, dass du ein Buch vom Himmel zu ihnen herabgelangen lassest. Aber von Moses forderten sie etwas Größeres als dies, da sie sagten: "Zeig uns Allah offensichtlich!" Da ereilte sie vernichtende Strafe ob ihres Frevels. Dann nahmen sie sich das Kalb, nachdem ihnen doch deutliche Zeichen zuteil geworden waren, aber Wir vergaben sogar das. Und Wir verliehen Moses offenbare Gewalt.

El pueblo del Libro te pide que hagas que les descienda un Libro desde el Cielo. Ya pidieron a Moisés algo más grande que esto cuando dijeron: “Muéstranos a Al-lah cara a cara”. Y al punto les sobrevino un astigo demoledor por su grave pecado. Entonces tomaron el becerro para adorarlo después de haberles llegado Signos evidentes, pero incluso eso les perdonamos. Y dimos a Moisés un argumento claro y decisivo.
اردو تفسیرِ صغیر
اہل کتاب[2] تجھ سے سوال کرتے ہیں کہ تو ان پر آسمان سے ایک کتاب نازل کرے (اس پر تعجب نہ کر کیونکہ) انہوں نے موسیٰ سے اس سے بھی بڑا سوال کیا تھا۔ انہوں نے اس سے کہا تھا کہ تو ہمیں اللہ ظاہر میں دکھا دے۔ تب ان کے ظلم کے سبب سے انہیں مہلک عذاب نے پکڑ لیا اور انہوں نے بچھڑے کو جبکہ ان کے پاس کھلے (کھلے) نشانات آچکے تھے (اپنا معبود) بنا لیا۔ پھر ہم نے اس (قصور) سے (بھی) درگزر کیا۔ اور ہم نے موسیٰ کو کھلا (کھلا) غلبہ دیا۔
اہل کتاب میں مسیحی اور یہودی دونوں شامل ہیں۔ مگر اس جگہ اہل کتاب سے مراد صرف یہودی ہیں کیونکہ آگے یہ ذکر آتا ہے کہ وہ حضرت مریمؑ پر بہتان باندھتے تھے اور انہوں نے حضرت مسیحؑ کو صلیب پر لٹکا کر مارنے کی کوشش کی اور یہ کام یہود کا تھا مسیحیوں کا نہیں تھا۔

یہ اہل کتاب اگر آج تم سے مطالبہ کر رہے ہیں کہ تم آسمان سے کوئی تحریر اُن پر نازل کراؤ تو اِس سے بڑھ چڑھ کر مجرمانہ مطالبے یہ پہلے موسیٰؑ سے کر چکے ہیں اُس سے تو اِنہوں نے کہا تھا کہ ہمیں خدا کو علانیہ دکھا دو اور اِسی سرکشی کی وجہ سے یکایک اِن پر بجلی ٹوٹ پڑی تھی پھر انہوں نے بچھڑے کو اپنا معبود بنا لیا، حالانکہ یہ کھلی کھلی نشانیاں دیکھ چکے تھے اس پر بھی ہم نے اِن سے درگزر کیا ہم نے موسیٰؑ کو صریح فرمان عطا کیا

The People of the Scripture ask you to bring down to them a book from the heaven. But they had asked of Moses [even] greater than that and said, "Show us Allah outright," so the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear evidences had come to them, and We pardoned that. And We gave Moses a clear authority.

اہلِ کتاب تجھ سےدرخواست کرتے ہیں کہ تو ان پر آسمان سے لکھی ہوئی کتب اتار لائے سو موسیٰ سے اس سے بڑی چیز مانگ چکے ہیں اور کہا ہمیں الله کو بالکل سامنے لا کر دکھا دے ان کے اس ظلم کے باعث ان پر بجلی ٹوٹ پڑی پھر بہت سی نشانیاں پہنچ چکنے کے بعد بچھڑے کو بنا لیا پھر ہم نے وہ بھی معاف کر دیا اور ہم نے موسیٰ کو بڑا رعب دیاتھا

Ask you (the) People (of) the Book that you bring down to them a book from the heaven. Then indeed, they (had) asked Musa greater than that for they said, "Show us Allah manifestly," so struck them the thunderbolt for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf (for worship) from after [what] came to them the clear proofs, then We forgave them for that. And We gave Musa an authority clear.

The People of the Book will ask thee to bring down upon them a Book from heaven; and they asked Moses for greater than that, for they said, 'Show us God openly.' And the thunderbolt took them for their evildoing. Then they took to themselves the Calf, after the clear signs had come to them; yet We pardoned them that, and We bestowed upon Moses a clear authority.

The people of the Scripture ask of thee that thou shouldst cause an (actual) Book to descend upon them from heaven. They asked a greater thing of Moses aforetime, for they said: Show us Allah plainly. The storm of lightning seized them for their wickedness. Then (even) after that) they chose the calf (for worship) after clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) had come unto them. And We forgave them that! And We bestowed on Moses evident authority.

Commentary:
In verse 25 the disbelievers and hypocrites were warned that they would be punished. In the present verse they are told that the time of their punishment has drawn very near. The reference in "the Hour" may be to the Battle of the Ditch.
