أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَآ أَوْ ءَاذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا ۖ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَعْمَى ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ وَلَٰكِن تَعْمَى ٱلْقُلُوبُ ٱلَّتِى فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Have they not travelled in the land, so that they may have hearts wherewith to understand, or ears wherewith to hear? But the fact is that it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that are blind.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

پس کیا وہ زمین میں نہیں پھرے تا انہیں وہ دل ملتے جن سے وہ عقل سے کام لیتے یا ایسے کان نصیب ہوتے جن سے وہ سن سکتے۔ پس آنکھیں اندھی نہیں ہوتیں بلکہ دل اندھے ہوتے ہیں جو سینوں میں ہیں۔

French

N’ont-ils pas voyagé sur la terre, afin qu’ils aient un cœur pour comprendre, ou des oreilles avec lesquelles entendre ? Mais le fait est que ce ne sont pas les yeux qui sont aveugles, mais ce sont les cœurs qui se trouvent dans les poitrines qui sont aveugles.

Sind sie denn nicht im Lande umhergereist, so dass sie Herzen haben könnten, damit zu begreifen, oder Ohren, damit zu hören? Denn fürwahr, es sind ja nicht die Augen, die blind sind, sondern blind sind die Herzen, die in den Busen sind.

[c]他们不曾在大地上旅行吗? 以便他们获得了解 (那些事物) 的心和听闻 (那些事物) 的耳。(因为这是实话:外形的) 眼不是 (视而) 不见, (视而) 不见的却是胸中的心。

Non hanno forse viaggiato per il paese, sì che possano avere cuori con i quali comprendere, o orecchie con le quali sentire? Ma il fatto è che non sono i loro occhi che sono ciechi, ma ciechi sono i cuori che si trovano nei petti.

¿Acaso no recorrieron el país para tener corazones con los que entender u oídos con los que oír? pero el hecho es que no son los ojos los que son ciegos sino los corazones que encierran sus pechos, los que están ciegos.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

کیا وہ زمین میں چل کر نہیں دیکھتے تا کہ ان کو ایسے دل حاصل ہو جائیں جو (ان باتوں کو) سمجھنے والے ہوں یا کان حاصل ہو جائیں جو (ان باتوں کو) سننے والے ہوں۔ کیونکہ اصل بات یہ ہے کہ ظاہری آنکھیں اندھی نہیں ہوتیں بلکہ دل جو سینوں میں ہیںاندھے ہوتے ہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

[b]Have they not travelled in the land, so that they may have hearts wherewith to understand, or ears wherewith to hear? For, surely, it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.[1961]

It is clear from this verse that the dead, the blind and the deaf spoken of here and elsewhere in the Qur’an are the spiritually dead, blind and deaf.

[b]Have they not travelled in the land, so that they may have hearts wherewith to understand, or ears wherewith to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.[2476]

Commentary:

The verse exhorts disbelievers to study the histories of and to learn a lesson from the fate of those people who rejected the former Prophets. It is also clear from this verse that the dead, the blind and the deaf spoken of here and elsewhere in the Quran are the spiritually blind, deaf and dead. See also 17:73.

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

کیا یہ لوگ زمین میں چلے پھرے نہیں ہیں کہ اِن کے دل سمجھنے والے اور اِن کے کان سُننے والے ہوتے؟ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ آنکھیں اندھی نہیں ہوتیں مگر وہ دل اندھے ہو جاتے ہیں جو سینوں میں ہیں

English - Sahih

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

کیا انھوں نے ملک میں سیر نہیں کی پھر ان کے ایسے دل ہوجاتے جن سے سمجھتے یا ایسے کان ہو جاتے جن سے سنتے پس تحقیق بات یہ ہے کہ آنکھیں اندھی نہیں ہوتیں بلکہ دل جو سینوں میں ہیں اندھے ہو جاتے ہیں

Have they not journeyed in the land that their hearts might understand and their ears might listen? For indeed it is not the eyes that are blinded; it is rather the hearts in the breasts that are rendered blind.
