الغاشیه (Overwhelming Calamity) is derived from غشی. They say غشیه i.e. it covered or overwhelmed him. غشی اللیل means, the night was dark. غاشیة means, an overwhelming calamity; a terrific misery (Lane).
Commentary:
The reference in the verse may be to the Judgement Day or to a terrific calamity that overtakes a people in this life, on account of their misdeeds. The severe famine that held Mecca in its grip for about seven years in the time of the Holy Prophet has also been referred to in the Quran as غاشیة (44:11-12). It was indeed a terrific calamity for the Meccans.

اس جگہ انسانوں پر جو آخری زمانہ میں عذاب آنے والا ہے اس کی خبر دی گئی ہے اور بتایا گیا ہے کہ جب وہ عذاب آئے گا تو مجرم انسان کا چہرہ اترا ہوا ہوگا۔ اور وہ بڑا زور لگائے گا کہ کسی طرح وہ اس عذاب کو ٹلا دے۔

وجوه meaning 'chiefs' or 'leaders' of men; the verse signifies that on the Day of Reckoning the great leaders of disbelief will be debased and humiliation will be writ large on their faces.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
عربی میں ضَرِیْع اور شِبْرَق دو لفظ ہیں جن سے مراد ایسا گھاس ہوتا ہے جس کی جڑیں نہیں ہوتیں جب وہ خشک ہو تو اس کو ضَرِیْع کہتے ہیں اور جب تازہ ہو تو اُسے شِبْرَق کہتے ہیں اور اس کی خاصیت یہ ہوتی ہے کہ اس کے کھانے سے کوئی نفع نہیں ہوتا یعنی نہ تو انسان کی صحت کو کوئی طاقت حاصل ہوتی ہے اور نہ وہ موٹا ہوتا ہے چنانچہ قرآن کریم نے بھی یہی معنے کئے ہیں کہ لَایُسْمِنُ وَلَایُغْنِیْ مِنْ جُوْعٍ اور آیت کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ وہ دوزخ میں جائیں گے اور ایسے کھانے ان کو نہیں ملیں گے جو طاقت بخشنے والے ہوں بلکہ وہ کھانے ملیں گے جونہ طاقت بخشیں گے اور نہ ان سے سیری ہوگی۔

ضریع (dry, bitter and thorny herbage) is derived from ضرع i.e. he (kid) took with his mouth the udder. This seems to be regarded by some as the primary signification of the word. All the three forms, viz. dara‘a & dari‘a & daru‘a mean, he was or became weak. ضریع means, a bad sort of pasture by which cattle do not become fat or fresh and which renders their condition bad; a certain dry, bitter, thorny plant (Lane).

Vv. 3-8 signify that the enemies of Islam will try hard to check its progress. But all their efforts will prove abortive. Before their very eyes the tender plant of Islam will grow into a mighty tree and their own power and glory will depart. Their sons and grandsons will enter the fold of Islam, and they will be consumed with rage and will burn in the fire of envy at seeing it spread fast; utter humiliation and ignominy will be their lot; they will be given hot water to drink and to eat which, instead of giving them nourishment or slaking their thirst and satisfying their hunger, will add to their weakness and hasten the withering away of their bodies—they will be utterly deprived of peace of mind, and calamities will overwhelm them in varying forms.

Commentary:
The Surah contains a contrast between the heavenly rewards that the righteous will receive and the severe punishment which will be meted out to the sinful for rejecting the Divine Message. The construction of this and the preceding eight verses shows that Muslims collectively will share in the gifts and rewards mentioned in them.

信者像排成一列的骆驼, 都在带头的一匹后面一直向前走去, 服从他们的带路人。或者仿佛在灼热的沙漠中走去而几天也没水的骆驼, 他们在艰难困苦之中无限忍耐, 继续他们的精神旅程而无所怨恨。اِبِل (Ibil) 的意思也是云 (Lane)。这节经文意味着安拉将传播 «古兰经» 教义, 因为这是整个大地精神之水。
یہاں اِبِل کا لفظ ہے‘ مگر اِبِل جو اونٹ کا عام نام ہے اس کے معنے لغت میں بادل کے بھی لکھے ہیں (مفردات) اور یہی معنے ہم نے کیے ہیں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ اس آیت میں فرماتا ہے کہ بادل ایک جگہ سے اٹھتے ہیں اور ساری دنیا میں پھیل جاتے ہیں۔ کیا قرآن کے منکر یہ بھی نہیں سمجھتے کہ بادلوں کو پیدا کرنے والا خدا جس نے مادی پانی ان کے ذریعہ سے ساری دنیامیں پھیلا دیا ہے کیا قرآن کریم کے روحانی پانی کو ساری دنیا میں نہیں پھیلا سکتا۔

Or, like camels which can go on for days without water in a hot, sandy desert, they have infinite patience under trials and hardships and continue their spiritual journey without complaining. Ibil also meaning clouds (Lane), the verse may signify that God will spread the teachings of the Qur’an which is spiritual water over the entire earth.

Or the verse may mean that just as God has placed the sun, the moon, the stars and planets in the physical heaven and through them He sustains the physical world, so will the spiritual sun (the Holy Prophet), the spiritual moon (the Promised Messiah), the spiritual planets and stars (Muslim divines) sustain the spiritual world.
