And Allah had surely made good to you His promise when you were slaying and destroying them by His leave, until, when you became lax and disagreed among yourselves concerning the order and you disobeyed after He had shown you that which you loved, He withdrew His help. Among you were those who desired the present world, and among you were those who desired the next. Then He turned you away from them, that He might try you — and He has surely pardoned you, and Allah is Gracious to the believers. —

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور یقیناً اللہ نے تم سے اپنا وعدہ سچ کر دکھایا جب تم اس کے حکم سے ان کی بیخ کنی کر رہے تھے۔ تاآنکہ جب تم نے بزدلی دکھائی اور تم اصل حکم کے بارہ میں باہم جھگڑنے لگے اور تم نے اس کے باوجود بھی نافرمانی کی کہ اُس نے تمہیں وہ کچھ دکھلا دیا تھا جو تم پسند کرتے تھے۔ تم میں ایسے بھی تھے جو دنیا کی طلب رکھتے تھے اور تم میں ایسے بھی تھے جو آخرت کی طلب رکھتے تھے۔ پھر اُس نے تمہیں ان سے پرے ہٹالیا تا کہ تمہیں آزمائے۔ اور (جو بھی ہوا) وہ یقیناً تمہیں معاف کرچکا ہے اور اللہ مومنوں پر بہت فضل کرنے والا ہے۔

French

Et assurément Allāh avait tenu Sa promesse qu’Il avait faite, lorsque vous les exterminiez avec Son autorisation, jusqu’au moment où vous avez vacillé à propos de l’obéissance aux directives du Saint Prophète et avez commencé à vous disputer entre vous concernant le but réel visé par cet ordre, et avez désobéi après qu’Il vous ait octroyé ce que désirait vos cœurs sous la forme de la victoire. Il a retiré Son soutien. Certains d’entre vous désiraient la vie d’ici-bas, tandis que d’autres désiraient la vie à venir. Alors, Il vous a détournés d’eux afin de vous éprouver – et Il vous a sûrement pardonné, et Allāh est Seigneur de la grâce pour les croyants –

当你们奉安拉之命击溃他们 (敌军) 时, 安拉确已完成了他对你们的许约, 直到他给你们看到你们所喜欢的东西, 你们动摇, 关于 (安拉使者的) 指令你们互相争论而不服从, (於是他终止对你们的援助)。你们中有些追求今世, 有些追求后世。然后他为了试验你们, 使你们脱离了他们 (敌人) 的攻击, 他的确饶恕了你们。安拉对信仰者真是极有恩典的。

E di certo Allah aveva mantenuto la Sua promessa, quando con il Suo permesso voi li stavate uccidendo e distruggendo, fino al momento in cui vacillaste e dissentiste tra di voi riguardo al vero intento dell'ordine e disobbediste, dopo che Egli vi aveva fatto vedere la vittoria ciò che amavate. Allora, Egli ritirò il Suo aiuto. Tra voi c'erano coloro che desideravano questo mondo e tra voi c'erano coloro che desideravano quello dopo. Allora Egli vi allontanò da loro, per mettervi alla prova. Ed Egli vi ha sicuramente perdonato, perché Allah è Clemente verso i credenti.

Y en verdad Al-lah cumplió con vosotros Su promesa cuando los poníais en fuga y los derrotabais con Su permiso; hasta que, cuando laqueasteis en lo concerniente a la obediencia al Santo Profeta y comenzasteis a disputar entre vosotros sobre la verdadera intención de la orden y desobedecisteis después de que Él os hubiera concedido lo ue vuestro corazón deseaba en forma de victoria, os retiró Su ayuda. Entre vosotros había quienes deseaban el presente mundo y otros que deseaban el futuro. Entonces os alejó de ellos para poder probaros –y en verdad Él ya os ha perdonado, y Al-lah es Clemente para los creyentes-

اور اللہ نے (اس وقت) جبکہ تم انہیں اس کے حکم سے مار مار کر فنا کر رہے تھے تم سے اپنا وعدہ یقیناً پورا کر دیا یہاں تک کہ جب تم نے سستی کی اور (رسول اللہ کے) حکم کے متعلق باہم جھگڑا کیا اور اس کے بعد کہ جو کچھ تم پسند کرتے تھے اس نے تمہیں دکھا دیا تھا نافرمانی کی (تو اس نے اپنی مدد روک دی) بعض تم میں سے دنیا کے طالب تھے اور بعض تم میں سے آخرت کے طالب تھے پھر اس نے تمہیں تمہاری آزمائش کرنے کے لئے ان (یعنی دشمنوں) کے حملہ سے بچا لیا [1]اور اس نے تمہیں یقیناً معاف کر دیا ہے اور اللہ مومنوں پر بڑا فضل کرنے والا ہے۔

And Allah had surely made good to you His promise[499] when you were slaying and destroying them by His leave, until, when your courage failed you[500] and you disputed among yourselves concerning the order[501] and you disobeyed[502] after He had shown you that which you loved, He withdrew His help. Among you were those who desired the present world,[503] and among you were those who desired the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them, that He might try you—and He has surely pardoned you, and Allah is Gracious to the believers—

Commentary:

The word "promise" occurring in the verse refers to the general promise of victory and success repeatedly given to Muslims.

The clause, when you became lax, refers to the party of archers posted at the rear of the Muslim army at Uhud, and signifies that they could not resist the temptation of taking part in the actual fighting and in collecting the booty, and their failure to control that desire was an act of cowardice on their part. It is indeed the heart which is the seat of true bravery and courage. Says the Holy Prophet: "Strong is not he who overthrows his rival in a wrestling match, but strong is he who controls himself in times of anger" (Bukhari ch. on Adab). The word, order, in the clause, you disagreed among yourselves concerning the order, may refer either to the order of the Holy Prophet given to the party of archers not to leave their station without his permission or to the import of the order, i.e. whether the Holy Prophet really meant them to stay there even after the battle had been won, some saying that he did mean that and others alleging that he did not.

The words, you disobeyed, signify that they paid no heed to their leader, ‘Abdullah bin Jubair, who, in compliance with the order of the Prophet, directed them not to quit the place, in spite of the fact that victory was within sight. They could not control themselves and so brought misfortune for the Muslims.

The words, those who desired the present world etc., refer to the party that abandoned the place at which they had been stationed. The Arabic clause may also be rendered as meaning that some members of the party desired the nearer thing, i.e. taking part in fighting and collecting the booty, while others (viz. ‘Abdullah bin Jubair and those of his comrades who did not quit their post) desired what was farther off, i.e. they thought of the ultimate consequence of disobeying the command of the Holy Prophet. Some were short-sighted, while others were far-sighted.

The words, He turned you away from them, signify that God imposed the reverse in order to make this incident a lesson for the future.

اللہ نے (تائید و نصرت کا) جو وعدہ تم سے کیا تھا وہ تو اُس نے پورا کر دیا ابتدا میں اُس کے حکم سے تم ہی اُن کو قتل کر رہے تھے مگر جب تم نے کمزوری دکھائی اور اپنے کام میں باہم اختلاف کیا، اور جونہی کہ وہ چیز اللہ نے تمہیں دکھائی جس کی محبت میں تم گرفتار تھے (یعنی مال غنیمت) تم اپنے سردار کے حکم کی خلاف ورزی کر بیٹھے اس لیے کہ تم میں سے کچھ لوگ دنیا کے طالب تھے اور کچھ آخرت کی خواہش رکھتے تھے تب اللہ نے تمہیں کافروں کے مقابلہ میں پسپا کر دیا تاکہ تمہاری آزمائش کرے اور حق یہ ہے کہ اللہ نے پھر بھی تمہیں معاف ہی کر دیا کیونکہ مومنوں پر اللہ بڑی نظر عنایت رکھتا ہے

English - Sahih

And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

And certainly fulfilled to you Allah His promise, when you were killing them by His permission, until when you lost courage and you fell into dispute concerning the order and you disobeyed from after [what] He (had) shown you what you love. صَرَفَ کے اصل معنے تو پھرانے کے ہیں لیکن چونکہ اس کے بعد عَنْ آیا ہے جس کے معنے دشمن کے حملہ سے بچانے کے ہوتے ہیں۔ اس لئے ہم نے اس کا ترجمہ یہ کیا ہے کہ تمہیں دشمنوں کے حملہ سے بچا لیا۔

God has been true in His promise towards you when you blasted them by His leave; until you lost heart, and quarrelled about the matter, and were rebellious, after He had shown you that you longed for. Some of you there are that desire this world, and some of you there are desire the next world. Then He turned you from them, that He might try you; and He has pardoned you; and God is bounteous to the believers.

Allah surely fulfilled His promise (of succour) when you were slaying them by His leave until the moment when you flagged and quarrelled among yourselves about the matter, and acted against the order of (the Prophet). Soon He showed you what you had intensely desired - for some among you sought this world and some of you sought the Next. Thereupon, in order to put you to a test He turned you away from your foes. Still He pardoned you after that for Allah is Bounteous to those who believe.
