فَلَمَّا رَاَوۡہُ عَارِضًا مُّسۡتَقۡبِلَ اَوۡدِیَتِہِمۡ قَالُوۡا ہٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُّمۡطِرُنَا ۚ بَلۡ ہُوَ مَا اسۡتَعۡجَلۡتُمۡ بِہٖ ۖ رِیۡحٌ فِیۡہَا عَذَابٌ اَلِیۡمٌ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Then, when they saw it coming towards their valleys as a cloud, they said, ‘This is a cloud which will give us rain.’ ‘Nay, but it is that which you sought to hasten — a wind wherein is a grievous punishment.

پس جب انہوں نے اسے ایک بادل کی صورت میں دیکھا جو اُن کی وادیوں کی طرف بڑھ رہا تھا تو کہا یہ ایسا بادل ہے جو ہم پر بارش برسانے والا ہے۔ نہیں! بلکہ یہ تو وہی ہے جسے تم جلد مانگا کرتے تھے۔ یہ ایک ایسا جھکڑ ہے جس میں دردناک عذاب ہے۔

French

Puis, lorsqu’ils le virent s’avancer - le châtiment - vers leurs vallées sous la forme d’un nuage, ils dirent : « Ceci est un nuage qui nous donnera de la pluie. » « Non, mais c’est ce que vous avez cherché à hâter : un vent dans lequel il y a un châtiment douloureux.

Entonces, cuando lo vieron acercándose hacia sus valles como una nube, dijeron: “Es una nube que nos dará la lluvia”. “No, no es sino lo que queríais apresurar: un viento que lleva un severo castigo”.

پس جب اس کی قوم نے اس عذاب کو ایک بادل کی صورت میں اپنی وادیوں کی طرف بڑھتے ہوئے دیکھا تو انہوں نے کہا یہ ایک بادل ہے جو ہم پر بارش برسائے گا (ہم نے کہا) نہیں‘ یہ وہ (عذاب) ہے جس کو تم جلدی مانگتے تھے (یہ) ایک ہوا ہے‘ جس میں دردناک عذاب پوشیدہ ہے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

Then, when they saw the punishment coming towards their valleys in the form of a cloud, they said, ‘This is a cloud which will give us rain.’ We said, ‘Nay, but it is that which you sought to hasten— a [a]wind wherein is a grievous punishment;

41:17.

Then, when they saw it coming towards their valleys as a cloud, they said, ‘This is a cloud which will give us rain.’ ‘Nay, but it is that which you sought to hasten—[a]a wind wherein is a grievous punishment.[3778]

Important Words:

عارض (cloud) is the act. part. from عرض They say عرض الشیء i.e. he showed, manifested, presented the thing. عارض means, anything showing its breadth or side, hence appearing; a collection of clouds extending sideways in the horizon or a collection of clouds that come over in the sky unexpectedly or appear like a mountain; a gift appearing from a person (Lane & Aqrab).

Whereas the word ریح (wind) has been used in the Quran both in a good and a bad sense, its plural always is used in a good sense.

پھر جب انہوں نے اُس عذاب کو اپنی وادیوں کی طرف آتے دیکھا تو کہنے لگے "یہ بادل ہے جو ہم کو سیراب کر دے گا" "نہیں، بلکہ یہ وہی چیز ہے جس کے لیے تم جلدی مچا رہے تھے یہ ہوا کا طوفان ہے جس میں دردناک عذاب چلا آ رہا ہے

And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment,

پھر جب انہوں نے اسے دیکھا کہ وہ ایک ابر ہے جو ان کے میدانوں کی طرف بڑھا چلا آ رہا ہے کہنے لگے کہ یہ تو ابر ہے جو ہم پر برسے گا (نہیں) بلکہ یہ وہی ہے جسے تم جلدی چاہتے تھے یعنی آندھی جس میں دردناک عذاب ہے

پس جب وہ اسے نزدیک دیکھیں گے تو وہ لوگ جنہوں نے انکار کیا ان کے چہرے بگڑ جائیں گے اور کہا جائے گا یہی ہے وہ جو تم طلب کیا کرتے تھے۔

Mais lorsqu’ils la verront toute proche, le visage de ceux qui refusent de croire sera affligé, et il sera dit : « Voici ce que vous réclamiez. »

当他们看见它 (受约的惩罚) 临近, 不信者的面目将是忧伤的,[1454] 有的将对他们说: “这就是你们所不断呼求的。”

不信者的特点是, 只要还没有受到惩罚, 他们就吹牛说大话, 嘲弄讥笑信者, 但当他们面临惩罚的时候就只感到沮丧、灰心、情绪低落。

Ma quando la vedranno avvicinarsi, le facce di coloro che non credono saranno afflitte, e sarà detto: «Ecco quello che eravate soliti richiedere.»

Pero cuando lo vean cerca, los rostros de los incrédulos se ensombrecerán; y se les dirá: “Esto es lo que solíais pedir”.

اور جب وہ اس (موعود عذاب) کو قریب آتا دیکھیں گے تو کافروں کے منہ بگڑ جائیں گے اور ان سے کہا جائے گا یہی وہ چیز ہے جس کو تم باربار بلا رہے تھے۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

But when they see it nigh, the faces of those who disbelieve will be grief-stricken,[3086] and it will be said, ‘This is what you repeatedly asked for.’

It is characteristic of disbelievers that as long as punishment does not overtake them, they boast and brag and hurl jibes and raileries at believers, but when they are face to face with it, they are seized with a sense of extreme frustration, dismay and dejection.

Commentary:

It is characteristic of disbelievers that as long as punishment does not overtake them, they boast and brag and hurl jibes and railleries at believers, but when they are face to face with it, they are seized with a sense of extreme frustration, dismay, and dejection.

پھر جب یہ اُس چیز کو قریب دیکھ لیں گے تو اُن سب لوگوں کے چہرے بگڑ جائیں گے جنہوں نے انکار کیا ہے، اور اُس وقت ان سے کہا جائے گا کہ یہی ہے وہ چیز جس کے لیے تم تقاضے کر رہے تھے

English - Sahih

But when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."

پھر جب وہ اسے قریب دیکھیں گے تو ان کی صورتیں بگڑ جائیں گی جو کافر ہیں اور کہا جائے گا یہ وہی ہے جسے تم دنیا میں مانگا کرتے تھے

When they realise it has come upon them, distraught will be the faces of unbelievers. They will be told: "This is what you asked for."
