Disbelievers have no faith in retribution of the Hereafter; so, as a proof of the fact that their deeds will not avail them at all on the Day of Resurrection, they are told that in the present life also their efforts to destroy Islam will prove futile and this will be evidence of the fact that in the life to come also their works will be of no use to them.

Commentary:

The words, those who disbelieve, here refer to Jews, who have suffered great hardships throughout the ages. The tale of their woes and afflictions at the hands of Titus about 70 years after the crucifixion of Jesus pales into insignificance before the sufferings to which they have been subjected in some parts of Europe in our own time.

Commentary:
This verse further explains the true significance of repentance. So long as death does not overtake one and the door of performing good works is open, the door of repentance is also open. But in no case will mere lip-repentance of disbelievers or their alms be accepted. If there is no faith in the heart, mere giving of alms or mere apparently good works cannot win the pleasure of God, even if one spends large quantities of gold.

Commentary:
In this verse the Holy Prophet and the Faithful are told that in spite of their intense desire all disbelievers would never believe because man is a free agent and because God does not compel anyone to adopt a definite course. Since He does not force anyone to disbelieve, He does not force anyone to believe either. Such compulsion would frustrate the very purpose of religion, viz. the attainment of inner purity. God has therefore decreed that He would not grant guidance to those who are engaged in misguiding others. Not only would He not force them to the true path but on the contrary He would deprive them of all sources of assistance.
The expression من یضل (who lead others astray) has been taken by some to mean "whom God adjudges as erring". Such a meaning would be in clear conflict with the sense of the preceding verse. The correct meaning is, "he who is engaged in misleading others". The subject of the verb یضل is not اللّٰه (Allah) but the word من (who) immediately preceding it.

یعنی تمہارا مذہب دلیل پر مبنی نہیں بلکہ اپنی قوم کے لوگوں کو اپنی طرف مائل کرنے کے لئے ہے۔ سچا دین ہمیشہ دلیلوں پر قائم ہوتا ہے۔ مگر کفار کے دین کی بنیاد اس بات پر ہوتی ہے کہ دنیا کے لوگ خوش ہو جائیں خواہ خداتعالیٰ ناراض ہی ہو جائے۔ لیکن اس کے نتیجہ میں اس دنیا میں بھی ایسا وقت آتا ہے کہ جن کو خوش کرنے کے لئے کافر سچائی کا انکار کرتے ہیں وہی ان کے مخالف ہو جاتے ہیں اور اگلے جہان میں بھی ایسا وقت آئے گا۔ اور یہ دنیا کے دوست اس وقت کوئی کام نہ دیں گے۔

(2) You have made your idolatrous beliefs and practices the foundation of your love with each other, i.e. you have made the identity of your idolatrous beliefs the means to preserve the homogeneity of your community.

(2) you have made your idolatrous beliefs and practices the foundation of your love with each other, i.e. you have made the identity of your idolatrous beliefs the means to preserve the homogeneity of your community; or
(3) your idolatrous practices have proceeded from your love of each other, i.e. first you conceived love and affection for some persons and then let that love degenerate into their worship.
